    S2E16 Metal Meets Classical

Metal has a reputation for being “that screaming stuff,” but once you learn how musicians actually listen, the whole genre opens up. We sit down with Maddie, a Carnegie Mellon student studying music performance on viola, to break down why heavy metal, rock, and classical music often use the same core tools: layering, texture, themes, tension and release, and the kind of disciplined practice that turns a player into a technician. We dig into what makes certain bands feel almost symphonic, why listening to a full album can matter more than chasing singles, and how the live show changes everything. If you’ve ever loved a song on streaming and then felt your brain melt hearing it in a venue, you already know what we mean. We also talk about why “simple” doesn’t equal “bad,” from pop music’s intentional hooks to the reality that even complex bands sometimes need a straightforward track that just works. Then we get into the uncomfortable stuff: credit, influence, and why jazz and blues roots get ignored or minimized in mainstream music history. From there, we take on classical music elitism and make the case for film score composers like John Williams and Hans Zimmer as serious modern composers who deserve regular programming, not a once-a-year “movie night.” Hit play, share this with the music nerd in your life, and subscribe so you don’t miss what we do next. S2E15: Horror Movie Survival Test

One bad choice is all it takes to become the opening kill. We put that theory on trial with a fast, funny horror movie survival game where we drop ourselves into iconic scenarios and ask what we would actually do when the lights go out and the rules change.  We run through Scream, The Shining, A Quiet Place, The Blair Witch Project, Alien, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Ring, Final Destination, The Purge, The Mist, and Saw, using each film to test a different survival skill: resisting curiosity, handling isolation, following quarantine protocol, navigating as a group, and deciding when “helping” becomes self-destruction. Along the way we get into the small details that matter, like why investigating noises is almost never worth it, how environment design can beat raw bravery, and why humans can be more dangerous than any monster outside the door.  The big takeaway is simple and painfully practical: rational decisions keep you alive. When you prioritize exits, set boundaries, and refuse to play by a villain’s script, you stop being a horror movie victim and start being a problem for the plot.  Listen now, then tell us which horror movie you think you could survive, share the episode with your most reckless friend, and leave a review so more people can find the show. S1E14: Soup, Cider & Chaos

Fall shows up and suddenly everything makes sense again: the crisp air, the slower pace, the urge to cook something that takes four hours, and that feeling that the world is finally the right volume. We start with the pure chaos of “It’s fall, y’all,” then get real about why autumn feels like a full-body mood instead of boots-and-pumpkins branding. If you’ve ever felt more alive in September than in July, you’ll know exactly what we mean.  From there we chase the stories that match the season. We quote Tolkien, talk about the real-world landscapes that shaped Middle-earth, and nerd out over how a place can look so unreal it feels like Rivendell. Then we pivot hard into craft and performance, breaking down why Tom Hardy is so underrated, how his vocal choices transform characters like Bane and Venom, and why “power does not yell” is such a terrifyingly effective acting (and life) principle.  And because our brains refuse to stay on one track, we also get into soup season, the apple-versus-pumpkin debate, apple cider donuts, hot versus cold drinks, fantasy football smack talk when you don’t even know the rules, and the wild logistics of prepping for a Renaissance fair as a first-time vendor. We even introduce a Ren Faire persona with a backstory that may be slightly too deep for a weekend event.  If you like funny friendship energy with real opinions, cozy fall vibes, and nerdy detours that somehow come together, hit play. Subscribe for more, share this with your favorite autumn person, and leave a review with your definitive fall “scene.” Send us Fan Mail Support the show Silly Goose Merch is now available! S2E13: Halloween Candy Tribunal

Candy opinions get weirdly intense the moment Halloween shows up in the store aisle, so we decided to stop pretending and put the whole trick-or-treat bucket on trial. We’re talking worst Halloween candy, the stuff people hand out like it’s a clearance dump, and the treats that make you feel personally wronged as a kid. Yes, candy corn is the main defendant, and no, we are not taking plea deals.  We run through the classics that start arguments at every party: black licorice, Dots, tiny Tootsie Rolls, peanut butter taffy in the orange-and-black wrappers, Mary Jane candy, and those old-timey picks that feel like they came from a different century. Then we draw battle lines over mint chocolate, coconut bars like Mounds and Almond Joy, and caramel candies that require you to commit to a full jaw workout. If you care about Halloween candy rankings, trick-or-treat nostalgia, and the difference between a “treat” and a prank, you’ll feel seen.  It’s not all hate, though. We give credit to the god-tier staples like Reese’s, Snickers, and Sour Patch Kids, debate movie theater candy pairings, and talk about why gummies almost always win. We also get surprisingly sentimental about Dum-Dums, marshmallow treats, and the rituals that turn snacks into memories, plus the rare non-candy handout that actually works like pretzels and chips. Hit play, laugh with us, then subscribe, share the episode with your most opinionated friend, and leave a review. What candy should be banned from Halloween forever? S2E12: Ghost Farts and Zombie Dissertations

Do ghosts have privacy rules, or are we all just living in a paranormal open-concept floor plan? We lean all the way into spooky season with a rapid-fire Q and A that starts with ghost logistics and immediately goes off the rails, because the only thing scarier than the unknown is how confidently we try to explain it. Expect big laughs, dumb questions with weirdly thoughtful answers, and the kind of monster math that only makes sense once you’re already in it.  We bounce from haunted-object horror (haunted dolls vs a haunted Roomba that cleans up the evidence) to demon problems you can allegedly solve by being so annoying the underworld taps out. Then we hit Ouija board etiquette, unfinished business, and why famous haunted locations probably have spirits who are exhausted by tourists asking for “a sign.” If you love paranormal comedy, ghost stories, and the messy middle where fear turns into curiosity, this one stays lively the whole way through.  The back half turns into serious zombie apocalypse talk inside a ridiculous wrapper: when people actually stop going to work, whether zombies could have regional accents, and what store makes the best survival fortress. We argue for the underrated hardware store strategy, because tools, building materials, water solutions, seeds, and a defensible structure beat pure firepower when you’re thinking long-term survival. We finish with a sprint through classic monsters and cryptids, including the eternal debates you never knew you needed about vampire tattoos, OnlyFans cryptids, and the hard science of ghost farts.  If you’re into spooky season podcasts, paranormal banter, zombies, demons, Ouija boards, cryptids, and apocalypse planning, hit play, then subscribe, share it with a friend who asks unhinged questions, and leave a review telling us the dumbest scary question we should answer next. S2E11: Spring-Heeled Jack: Britain's Bounciest Bastard

A stranger pounds on the door and claims he needs a candle to catch Spring-Heeled Jack. Moments later, a young woman named Jane Alsop is fighting off a figure with claw-like hands and a mouth that reportedly breathes blue-white fire. That is not a campfire story we made up, it’s one of the most infamous Victorian London reports that helped launch a legend. We start with the earliest accounts, the repeating details, and the unsettling pattern of attacks that seem designed to terrify rather than steal.  From there, we zoom out to the world that allowed the myth to catch fire: fog, patchy gas streetlights, industrial smoke, and a city primed for rumor. Once the newspapers get involved and the Lord Mayor publicly reads a letter about the attacks, the fear turns official and spreads fast. We talk about how public acknowledgement fuels sightings, how vigilante patrols form, and how a real threat can blur into mass panic where everyone thinks they see the monster.  Then the timeline jumps and the story mutates. By the 1870s, Spring-Heeled Jack is allegedly leaping over armed sentries and walking away from gunfire, the kind of escalation that screams folklore evolution. We break down the strongest theories, from a wealthy aristocrat suspect (the Marquis of Waterford) to copycats using the legend as cover, to spring-loaded boots, and yes, the wild kangaroo explanation. If you love historical true crime, Victorian folklore, urban legends, and the psychology of moral panic, this one is for you.  Subscribe for more strange history and messy human stories, share this with a friend who loves a good mystery, and leave a review to help more listeners find us. S2E10: Sad Honks and Tributes

Three names. Three gut punches. Three reminders that a “celebrity” can still feel like someone who helped raise you. We’re talking about the losses of Dolly Parton, Tim Curry, and Peter Cullen, and why those passings landed like more than just headlines for us and for so many people listening. We start with Dolly, because her story is bigger than records or awards. Her Appalachian roots, her generosity, and her philanthropy feel like a blueprint for what real legacy looks like. We dig into the Dolly Parton Imagination Library and why children’s literacy matters in practical, everyday ways for families. We also revisit the “I Will Always Love You” royalties story as a surprisingly sharp lesson in creative ownership, boundaries, and choosing to turn success into long-term good. Then we celebrate Tim Curry, the rare performer who made “weird” feel like home. From Rocky Horror to cult favorites and voice work, he proved you can be bold, strange, hilarious, and still deeply loved. And we honor Peter Cullen, the voice actor behind Optimus Prime, including the personal story that shaped that iconic performance and the idea that the strongest leaders can also be gentle. If you’ve ever felt silly for mourning someone you didn’t personally know, you’re not alone. Listen, share this with a friend who needs it, and if it resonates, subscribe and leave a review so more people can find the show. What role, song, or line do you still hear in your head? S2E9: Gabby Gooses: Loaded Questions & Peanut Butter

A simple “how are you doing?” turns into a whole philosophy problem, and that is the energy we bring today. We bounce from a real-time murder trial deep dive to the strange comfort of watching the internet piece together clues, and we talk about why true crime hits so hard even when you know it can get messy. If you’ve ever been pulled into a case, refreshing for updates like it’s a sport, you’ll recognize the mix of curiosity, dread, and can’t-look-away momentum. Then we shift into the opposite of doomscrolling: Minecraft. We get into why building, farming, and tinkering is one of the best anxiety buffers out there, how different play styles reveal what each of us values, and how a server can turn into a little family hangout with nieces and nephews. We also nerd out over mods and texture packs, the lockdown-era joy of long gaming sessions, and how a peaceful virtual landscape can feel like a real reset. From there, it’s Red Dead Redemption 2 grief, big feelings about storytelling, and the question every fan keeps asking: what should Red Dead Redemption 3 even be? We follow that thread into conspiracy shows, Skinwalker Ranch, simulation theory, and the brain-bending paradoxes that show up when you try to “prove” reality is fake. We finish with the most relatable horror of all: rumors about dynamic pricing via digital shelf labels, grocery store layouts that keep changing, and a surprisingly serious debate about peanut butter. If this one makes you laugh or makes your brain hurt in the best way, subscribe, share it with a fellow rabbit-hole traveler, and leave a review so more people can find us.
