Jessica Janzen: Losing Her Son, Finding Joy and Refusing to Quit

Jessica Janzen has built a life and career around bringing joy into hard places. But that philosophy came from experiences that tested nearly every part of her life. Jessica joins The Deets with Duddy to talk about growing up on a Manitoba farm, feeling unintelligent before discovering she had dyslexia and ADHD, struggling quietly with her mental health, and moving to Calgary with $300 and the chance to become a different version of herself. We get into meeting her husband Ronnie, the devastating diagnosis that changed their family, and the decision to “bring the joy” when they were told their son likely would not make his first birthday. Jessica opens up about grief, dark humour, keeping a marriage together through enormous loss, and how that experience eventually grew into Love for Lewiston, which has now raised more than $4 million. Jessica also talks about building a career as a keynote speaker, the pressure that comes with becoming known as “the joy person,” the times she has struggled to access her own message, and why she still believes joy belongs in difficult places. And despite everything she has already built, her ambitions are nowhere near finished. The Deets with Duddy is Calgary’s late-night show podcast - spotlighting the city’s culture, creativity, and people through unfiltered conversations with Calgary’s most interesting voices. #TheDeetsWithDuddy #JessicaJanzen #CalgaryPodcast #YYC #BringTheJoy

Beyond Bad Portraits: Mandy Stobo on Art, Calgary and Finding Joy

https://www.stoboart.com/ Mandy Stobo has spent more than 20 years making art, but the path there has been anything but straightforward. Before Bad Portraits became an international art project, Mandy was dreaming about working for Disney, spray painting train yards, raising her son, trying to find her place as an artist, and figuring out how to build a career on her own terms. She shares how a gallery director who hated her paintings accidentally helped launch her career, and why moving away from darker work eventually led her toward humour, connection and Bad Portraits. We get into the strange ride that followed, including Andy Samberg and The Lonely Island helping the project take off, Ford Models discovering exactly how "bad" the portraits really were, and The Weeknd walking around the Junos carrying a giant portrait of himself. The conversation also explores the artist beyond Bad Portraits. Mandy talks about creating work for film and television, experimenting with virtual and augmented reality, rediscovering her own creative identity, and returning to the Western imagery she grew up around. Her current work combines horses, cowboys, neon, street-art influences, memory and a changing relationship with Calgary and Alberta. We also talk about boundaries, the fear that creative opportunities might disappear, what her kids have learned from growing up around an artist, the projects she still wants to make, and why after decades of creating, Mandy feels like her work is finally arriving at pure joy. Jade Elephant: Loud, Live and a Little Unhinged

Jade Elephant is built for the stage. Mitchell Brady, Taylor Miles and Kyle Tenove join me to talk about the chemistry behind the Calgary rock trio, why they trust each other enough to take real risks live, and what happens when a mistake becomes part of the show instead of something to hide. We get into recording live off the floor with Russell Broom, making their new record without a click track, writing lyrics together for the first time, and how the band is starting to figure out what the Jade Elephant sound actually is. They also talk about opening for bands like Collective Soul, learning to feel like they belong on bigger stages, Kyle rebuilding his confidence as a singer, and why their latest single, “Who Would Have Known?”, is the most personal music they have made yet. Inside the Life of a Professional Magician | Matt Gore

What does it actually take to make a living as a magician? Matt Gore has spent his life figuring that out. From discovering magic as a kid in Cape Town and learning how to command an audience, to performing more than 3,000 shows and competing on some of magic’s biggest stages, Matt has built an entire career around making difficult things look effortless. We get into the years of practice behind a single effect, what separates doing tricks from actually entertaining a room, and what happens when something goes wrong live. Matt also shares what it was like leaving an established career in South Africa and rebuilding from scratch in Canada. The conversation also gets into the business behind being a professional entertainer, why Matt expanded into hosting and keynote speaking, how becoming a father changed the way he works, and where he wants to take his career next, including a bigger one-man show and new opportunities beyond magic. And yes, there’s magic. Stick around to the end of the YouTube episode for one more trick after the conversation wraps. Inside CIFF: How Calgary's Film Festival Comes Together | Adam Keresztes

What does it actually take to build a film festival? Adam Keresztes is the Lead Shorts Programmer at the Calgary International Film Festival (CIFF), where thousands of submissions, hundreds of decisions, and a whole lot of movie watching eventually become one of Calgary's biggest cultural events. Adam joins The Deets with Duddy to explain how he went from software developer to film programmer, what makes a movie stand out, why even great films get rejected, and how the programming team turns individual selections into a festival. We get into everything from forgiving technical mistakes (except bad sound) to programming disagreements, filmmaking trends, and why some incredible movies might never be seen again if you miss them at a festival. We also explore Calgary's growing film industry, what CIFF can mean for local filmmakers, how festivals create opportunities for networking and discovery, and why supporting Alberta-made films matters if we want the industry here to keep growing. Plus, Adam gives us a look at CIFF 2026, including a record number of Alberta-made shorts, two nights of Alberta Shorts programming, major films coming to Calgary, Cody Lightning's Smudge the Blades, and how to approach the festival if you've never been before. The Calgary International Film Festival runs September 24 to October 4, 2026. Pat Kordyback on Delta Sweet, Stereos, and Doing It His Way

Pat Kordyback joins The Deets with Duddy to talk about Delta Sweet, Stereos, MuchMusic, Summergirl, and what it means to build a new music chapter with real experience behind you. Pat looks back on the grind before Stereos broke through, the wild overnight shift after MuchMusic’s Disband, and how fast life changed when Canadian television could still turn a band into a national story. He talks about Summergirl taking off, getting recognized almost instantly, the power of the music industry machine, and the lessons that came from living through that kind of success. The conversation also gets into ego, yes-people, taxes, nostalgia, songwriting, country music, humour, and learning what kind of life you actually want once the attention changes. Pat is funny, honest, and self-aware about the parts of that era he is grateful for, and the parts he would not want to live through the same way again. Now with Delta Sweet, Pat is making country music that feels personal, funny, direct, and fully his. He talks about specific songs, performing under a new name, building trust in country music, and why this chapter is not about starting over. It is about doing it his way.
