Billionaire Biopics: the You Can See Everything Conundrum

Before You Can See Everything’s lead subject, Elizabeth Holmes, dissolved her medical device company due to claims of fraud, she was reportedly worth $4.5 billion. Mark Zuckerberg, Meta’s infamous founder and on whom the movie The Social Reckoning is based, is currently worth about $211 billion. This is chump change compared to his tech bro Elon Musk, who is centered in the movie Musk. His net worth is estimated to be north of $860 billion. But you know the old saying: “A billion here, a billion there, and pretty soon you’re talking real money.”  Many books, metrics, and academic lectures convey how such obscene amounts of money get concentrated in the hands of so few people. Historical charts and indices provide compelling visuals of what the wealth distribution looks like in the U.S. and even give a sense of how such inequity has come to feel, well, normal. At any rate, given that people like Holmes, Zuckerberg, Musk and other entrepreneurs live in the monetary stratosphere and are often embroiled in scandal, why do any of us flock to the theaters or pay extra to our streaming providers to see movies about them? What is our fascination with these untouchable figures? Join us on the Cup of Tea Critiques Podcast for a discussion about the appeal of billionaire biopics.  Send us a comment to let us know your favorite billionaire biopic and why.  For future updates, follow our podcast wherever you listen. Horror Movies: Why do we like to be scared?

Horror Movies: Why do we like to be scared?  Are you a fan of horror? Some people watch movies in the genre year‑round, others only during holidays like Halloween. Some people avoid the genre altogether. After all, the movies are often dark, ghoulish, and intensely violent in surreal ways. In other words, horror movies are designed to scare us. But why would we want to subject ourselves to feeling scared? We found some research to help us answer this question. Join us on the Cup of Tea Critiques Podcast as we peel back the layers on why we like to be scared.  Send us a comment to let us know why horror appeals to you.  For future updates, subscribe to our podcast wherever you listen, and for email updates on all things COTC, subscribe to our website using the link below:  https://www.cupofteacritiques.com/subscribe    References  Yang, Haiyang and Kuangjie Jang. “The Psychology Behind Why We Love (or Hate) Horror.” Harvard Business Review. From Gunsmoke to Yellowstone: How Westerns Have Evolved

Remember when western movies and TV shows were in vogue? Gunsmoke, Bonanza, The Wild Wild West? The rustic towns with flat landscapes, gun-slinging heroes, town brothels, and the everpresent saloons were hugely popular in the 1950s, 60s, and early 70s.  The shows fell by the wayside as consumer tastes changed. People seemed to tire of the familiar settings, predictable characters and stories, problematic themes, and lack of diverse casts. Beginning in the mid-1980s, Hollywood began producing westerns again but with a twist. Called Neo-westerns, which are movies and shows ranging from Dances with Wolves and Unforgiven in the ‘90s to Yellowstone, Dark Winds, and many Taylor Sheridan-produced Paramount+ shows since the 2020s.  The culture and costumes resemble the old productions, but the stories and themes are updated to center present day challenges, reflect broad diversity in the characters, and demonstrate enlightened perspectives. Grab a cup of tea and join us for this episode of the Cup of Tea Critiques Podcast, where we talk about the transformation from traditional to Neo-westerns.  Send us a comment to let us know which Neo-westerns you watch and what you find appealing about them.  For future updates, follow our podcast wherever you listen. Why Gen-Zs are Experiencing Marvel Fatigue

In analyzing ticket sales, Fandango found that the largest moviegoing audience is 18–24 years old, also known as Generation-Z (or Gen-Z). Yet, only 19 percent of this group are fans of the Marvel Connected Universe (MCU). What is the MCU, you ask, and why is this a problem? Well, MCU is a set of films with interconnected characters that fall under a single umbrella, which in this case is Marvel.  In Marvel’s summer release, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, for example, Marvel heroes like The Hulk, The Punisher, and Black Widow appeared in the film. Think television crossovers and you’ve got it.  As for the problem regarding the low interest of young moviegoers, if their interest in the MCU and other shared universes is shrinking, what does this foretell about the future of such films? Join us on this episode of the Cup of Tea Critiques Podcast where we talk about this phenomenon and the studios’ dilemma around shared universe productions. Send us a comment to let us know if you are a fan of a shared universe, including which one and what appeals to you about it. For future updates, follow our podcast wherever you listen. Annnnd Cut! Explaining the Fundamental Differences Between TV and Movie Directing

Although we spend more time in front of TV screens than their movie counterparts, many of us cannot recall the director of our favorite TV show, or rather favorite episode of our favorite TV show. But ask who directed our favorite three movies and we likely answer without hesitation. Losing esteemed television director James Burrows recently brought to mind our unfamiliarity with television directing itself. What makes the television space so different from that of feature films? If you have any interest in becoming a television director or exploring opportunities in this sphere of entertainment, you don’t want to miss this episode of the Cup of Tea Critiques Podcast, where we cover the fundamental differences between directing for the big and small screens. Think of a television show you regularly watch. We challenge you to send us a comment with the names of people who directed 3 of your favorite episodes.  For future updates, follow our podcast wherever you listen. The Celluloid Daredevils: Stunt Performers in Film

Know any stunt men or women? How about just the names of any stunt men or women? Since the silent films in the 1920s, actors and stunt people have performed some jaw-dropping feats on screen, yet, most of us have never heard of them and wouldn’t recognize them if they sat next to us at the theater. This tiny cadre of daredevils risks life and limb to deliver movie experiences that heighten our emotions and shift us to the edge of our seats. Think about the driving in the Fast and Furious movies, the horse chariot race in Ben-Hur, and the close hand to hand combat in the Bourne franchise. Engaging and sometimes lengthy scenes like these occasionally have real consequences, like broken bones and serious injuries to viscera. To top it off, sometimes actors perform their own stunts: Tom Cruise, Matt Damon, Jackie Chan, Jet Li, Jason Statham, Charlize Theron. Why do it, and how can anyone train for it? Join us on the Cup of Tea Critiques Podcast for “The Celluloid Daredevils: Stunt Performers in Film.”  Send us a comment telling us the best action sequence you ever saw in a movie!  For future updates, subscribe to our podcast wherever you listen, and for email updates on all things COTC, subscribe to our website using the link below:  https://www.cupofteacritiques.com/subscribe    Music licensed from artlist.io:            Johnathan Guerstein (Underground)  Peter Matri (Invasion)    References  Arnon, Ben. “Stuntman Austin Gill Explains Why People Risk Their Lives To Do Movie Stunts.”  The Huffington Post (December 16 2016). https://www.huffpost.com/entry/stuntman-austin-gill-explains-why-people-risk-their_b_58524a32e4b0d97882b7b6fd.  “Atomic Blonde | The 10-Minute Single Take Fight Scene in 4K HDR.” Focus Features (2021). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CrPDTalA1Lc.  “The Bourne Supremacy (4/9) Movie CLIP - Fighting Close & Dirty (2011).”  Movieclips. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jyZU7lfGjyk.  Davids, Brian. “‘Eraser’ at 30: Director Chuck Russell Explains How ‘Mission: Impossible’ Triggered a Major Rewrite Mid-Shoot.” Hollywood Reporter (June 24 2026). https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-features/eraser-director-mission-impossible-1236630187/.  de Semlyen, Phil. “The 20 most Oscar-worthy stunts in movie history.” Timeout (April 8 2025). https://www.timeout.com/film/greatest-stunts-in-movie-history.  “The History of Film Stunts.” FilmStack (2022). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wnPEbv77I4k.   “Jet Li Jumping to Fighting.
