    Nervous for No Reason

It's Friday night, game day tomorrow. The bag is packed, the cleats are by the door, and your athlete is ready. Then they come downstairs and say it: "I don't know why, but I'm nervous. Nothing's wrong." If you're an athlete, a parent, or a coach, you've probably asked some version of this: why am I nervous for no reason? Coach Eric's answer: there's no such thing. There's only "no single reason." The nervous feeling isn't random. It's a gauge reading how full the cup is, after dozens of small grains of sand nobody thought to count: a rough week of sleep, an unexplained role, a tryout on the calendar, a stat app that posts every at-bat, the car ride home. In this episode:• The difference between normal pregame butterflies and the dread that shows up days before• Name it: the inside/outside list that turns a vague feeling into something you can work on• Scan it: the 60-second capacity scan and the 2-yes rule for when to reduce the pour• Settle it: One Good Breath and the shoulders-hands-jaw reset you can use on deck, before the whistle, or in the bleachers• Scoop one grain: what athletes, parents, and coaches can each remove from the cup this week• Why so much of the sand comes from the environment adults built, and why the fix has to include the adults• Where the line is between everyday pressure and when it's time to bring in a pediatrician or a licensed therapist Drawing on 20 years of coaching athletes through pressure, these are performance tools for the normal fullness of a loud sports world. Not treatment, but a smaller pour and better footing. What's one grain of sand you could scoop out of your athlete's cup (or your own) this week? Tell us in the comments. Stop Fixing the Person: Why the Room Is the Real Problem

Have you ever seen a talented athlete or a hard-working employee suddenly lose their way? It is easy to label someone as having an attitude problem, but the truth is often much deeper than a simple character flaw. In this episode of Unlocked, Coach Eric explores why we need to stop blaming individuals and start looking at the environments they are standing in. Whether it is a locker room, a corporate office, or a family home, toxic systems often manufacture the very behaviors we criticize. When we see a person become defensive, quiet, or inconsistent, we are often witnessing them absorb the toxicity of the room around them. This video breaks down the concept of credit and blame asymmetry, where systems take all the credit for success but shift the blame onto individuals the moment things go wrong. Coach Eric provides a practical three-question test to help you determine if a person is truly the problem or if the environment is to blame. By asking if the person has functioned well elsewhere and if the same issues keep appearing across different people, you can uncover the truth about the culture you are part of. It is time to stop trying to fix the person and start fixing the room. Chapters 0:00 The problem with character labels 1:10 What a toxic environment actually looks like 2:15 Case study: The athlete who went quiet 3:35 Why this applies to workplaces and families 4:45 The credit and blame asymmetry explained 6:40 The 3-question test for any environment 8:05 Final thoughts on leadership and accountability If this video helped you see your team or family in a new light, please like and subscribe for more content on leadership and mental performance. The TRUTH About Daddy Ball: Why Your Kid Isn't Playing

Is daddy ball really the problem in youth sports, or is it something much deeper that we all face in everyday life? In this video, Coach Eric takes on one of the most controversial topics on social media to uncover the truth about favoritism and politics. ⚾️ The term daddy ball is often used as a curse word, but the reality is that personal biases exist everywhere, from the baseball field to the corporate office and even the school orchestra. Coach Eric breaks down why these biases form through trust, extra work, and the simple fact that human nature is rarely objective. He challenges parents to look at their own biases and recognize that without the dedicated volunteers who step up to coach, many of these opportunities for our children simply wouldn't exist. 🧢 Instead of focusing on whether every single roster spot is perfectly fair, we should be looking at whether our children are in a healthy, productive environment where they can grow and enjoy the game. If you have ever felt frustrated by sports politics, this video provides a fresh perspective on how to handle those situations with gratitude and a focus on what really matters for your child's development. 🌟 Chapters 0:00 Intro and the AI Challenge 2:15 The Truth About Daddy Ball and Politics 4:40 The Vital Role of Parent Volunteers 7:20 How Bias Works in Every Part of Life 9:50 Evaluating Your Child's Growth Environment 12:15 Play Big Outro and Musical Inspiration If you found this perspective helpful, please hit the like button and subscribe for more insights on youth sports and personal growth.
