    Authors of History with Lyndal Roper

    On this episode of the authors of history podcast my guest is Wolfson Prize nominated author and historian Lyndal Roper. Lyndal is a historian of early modern Europe. She grew up in Australia and did her first degree at the University of Melbourne. Since girlhood in Australia she has been fascinated by German history, and she has written on women and the Reformation, witchcraft, and sexuality in the sixteenth century. In 2011 she became Regius Professor of History at Oxford, the first woman to hold the 300 year old post. In 2016 she published a biography of the reformer Martin Luther. Lyndal's book "Summer of Fire and Blood, the German peasants war" was published in 2025 and won the Cundill Prize. It has been shortlisted for the prestigious Wolfson History Prize in 2029. To write this book, she cycled or walked almost all the areas it took place, cycling over 600 km from Strasbourg to Konstanz. Lyndal is the Holberg Laureate of 2026. won the Holberg Prize In 2016 won the Gerda Henkel Prize for lifetime achievement in history. Currently she holds a Humboldt Research Award (associated with the Free University Berlin) for research in Germany. She is honorary fellow of the History Department, University of Melbourne, fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities (2009), fellow of the British Academy (2011), and fellow of the Berlin-Brandenburgische Akademie der Wissenschaften, Berlin (2016). She also holds honorary doctorates from the University of Melbourne (2013) and the University of Basel (2021). In 2021 a portrait of Lyndal painted by Nneka Uzoigwe was hung in the dining hall of Oriel College, Oxford. She now runs experimental workshops, ‘Moving History’, teaching critical and creative thinking in combination with physical exercise.     Authors of History with Dr Tim Galsworthy

    On this episode of the Authors of History Podcast, I’m joined by historian Dr Tim Galsworthy to discuss his inspiration to teach and write, his research into memory, politics and race in the modern United States, with a particular focus on the Republican Party’s relationship with memories of the American Civil War. Tim joined Lincoln Bishop University in September 2023, having previously taught at the University of South Wales, the University of Gloucestershire and the University of Sussex. He teaches History and Military History across the modern and early modern periods, with a particular focus on the United States, Europe, Britain and the British Empire. Alongside his teaching and research, Tim is managing editor of the British Journal for Military History and has served on several academic committees. He received his PhD in History from the University of Sussex in 2023, funded by the CHASE Doctoral Training Partnership, and also holds an MPhil in American History from Selwyn College, Cambridge, and a BA in History from the University of Bristol.     Authors of History with Sam Wetherell

    On this episode of the Authors of History Podcast, I’m joined by historian and author Sam Wetherell. Sam is a historian of Britain and the world based at the University of York, where he teaches and writes about modern British history. His work explores cultural and urban history, race and the environment – and how the places we build shape the lives we lead. He is the author of two books. His first, Foundations: How the Built Environment Made Twentieth-Century Britain, was published by Princeton University Press in 2020. His latest, Liverpool: A story of Britain, was published by Head of Zeus/Bloomsbury in 2025 and has been shortlisted for the prestigious 2026 Wolfson History Prize, with the winner to be announced on 1 December 2026. Her first work of non-fiction, Stalin’s Apostles: The Cambridge Five and the Making of the Soviet Empire, has been praised by Kirkus as “outstanding” and “a darkly fascinating account of an infamous spy ring”. For the past 14 years, Antonia has been The Times’ historical fiction reviewer, bringing authority, insight and a sharp critical eye to the genre. Her writing and journalism have also appeared in The Guardian and The Spectator. From 2023 to March 2026, she created and hosted The Spymasters Podcast. Born in Buckinghamshire, Giles studied English at the University of Bristol. He is the author of 17 non-fiction books, along with three novels and four children’s books. His latest work, Empire at the Edge of the World: Endurance and Madness in the High Arctic, is published by John Murray on 24 September 2026. His books have been translated into more than 20 languages and serialised by the BBC and British newspapers. Giles also contributes to national and international publications. Helen is an author, historian and Professor of Modern and Contemporary British History at the University of Cambridge. Helen writes about the history of modern Britain, and she is an author of three books, including Double Lives: A History of Working Motherhood (Bloomsbury, 2020), which was shortlisted for the Wolfson History Prize. As well as being shortlisted for the Wolfson History Prize Helen has been invited to be a judge of this year’s Wolfson award panel. The winner will be announced on 1st December 2026. Before joining the University of Cambridge in September 2018, she taught at Queen Mary University of London for nine years.     Authors of History with Helen Castor

    On this episode of the Authors of History Podcast I am joined by award winning historian and author Helen Castor. Helen Castor is a historian of the later middle ages and sixteenth century. She studied for her BA and PhD at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, and was elected to a Research Fellowship at Jesus College, Cambridge, in 1993. Helen has presented programmes for BBC television, Channel 4 and BBC Radio, including Radio 4’s Making History, and documentaries based on She-Wolves and Joan of Arc for BBC Four and BBC Two. Her book Blood & Roses is a biography of the fifteenth-century Paston family, whose remarkable letters are the earliest surviving collection of private correspondence in the English language. Blood & Roses was longlisted for the Samuel Johnson Prize for Non-Fiction in 2005, and was awarded the Beatrice White Prize (for outstanding scholarly work in the field of English Literature before 1590) by the English Association in 2006. Helen's next book, She-Wolves: The Women Who Ruled England Before Elizabeth, was widely selected as one of the books of the year for 2010. In 2014, her book Joan of Arc: A History, was selected as one of the books of the year in the Sunday Times, Times, Guardian, Telegraph, Mail on Sunday and the Evening Standard, and longlisted for the PEN America/Jacqueline Bograd Weld Award for Biography in 2015. Her most recent book, The Eagle and the Hart: The Tragedy of Richard II and Henry IV, was published in 2024 to great acclaim. It was longlisted for the Women's Prize for Non-Fiction in 2025, shortlisted for the Elizabeth Longford Prize for Historical Biography in 2025, and named the Telegraph's Best Book of the Year for 2024 and shortlisted for the Wolfson History prize. In 2022 Helen was part of the judging for the Booker prize.
