Presence and Purpose: The Christian Journey to Enlightenment

In this episode of Meaningful Wealth, host Bonnie reflects on a conversation she had at the park on Mother’s Day with a man who dismissed the Bible as a fairy tale and religion as indoctrination. What struck her wasn’t just his rejection of faith, but his misunderstanding of spirituality itself. She explains that spirituality is not about superstition or blind belief—it’s about transformation. It offers real tools and practices like prayer, meditation, breathwork, and fasting that help us transcend our limited perception and align with something greater. Bonnie shares how, through these spiritual tools, we can access calm, clarity, and wisdom that go beyond our conditioning, wounds, or cultural programming. As a Christian, she frames this transformation through the teachings of Jesus, describing enlightenment as a real, twofold journey that includes both inner presence and outer purpose. The first part of enlightenment is about state—being grounded in compassion, peace, and love regardless of what’s happening around us. It’s the ability to remain present, still, and open to God’s spirit in any moment. Biblical figures like Moses exemplify this kind of presence. She highlights moments in Moses’s life—his encounters with God, his solitude, and his calling—showing how these illustrate deep spiritual stillness. But even Moses, in a moment of frustration, acted in misalignment with God’s instruction, reminding us that losing presence can distort our purpose. The second part of enlightenment is movement—faithful action aligned with your divine calling. Enlightenment isn’t just stillness or peace; it’s about stepping into the work only you can do. Jesus didn’t stay still after his calling—he moved with boldness, healing, teaching, and fulfilling his mission. Likewise, we’re called not just to believe, but to act in obedience to our unique God-given purpose. Bonnie clarifies this isn’t about hustling or striving, but about responding faithfully with our gifts, presence, and love. True enlightenment, then, is the integration of both presence and purpose—stillness and movement. It’s listening in silence and acting in love. It’s the alignment of our state with God’s peace and our actions with His calling. As the Bible teaches, faith without works is dead. The fruit of the Spirit shows up not just in how we feel, but in how we live. Bonnie closes with reflective questions for the listener: Where are you being invited to deepen your presence? Where might you be acting out of fear or frustration rather than obedience? What part of your calling have you been avoiding? And how can you integrate stillness and purpose into this week? This episode is a powerful invitation to embrace the full journey of spiritual transformation—becoming present to God in each moment and stepping boldly into the life you were created to live.

God’s Money, Your Stewardship: Building Real Wealth with Wisdom

In this heartfelt episode of Meaningful Wealth, portfolio manager and host Bonnie Gunn sits down with Reverend Shelley for a candid conversation on how faith and finances intertwine. They explore biblical perspectives on money, tithing, rest, and trust, challenging the cultural idolization of wealth. Together, they reflect on what it means to build true wealth—not just materially, but spiritually and emotionally—through generosity, stewardship, and a grounded relationship with God. Reverend Shelley McVea helps us dive deep into what it really means to build wealth—not just from a financial perspective, but from a spiritual one. So often we chase security, freedom, or influence through money without ever pausing to consider whose money it actually is. This conversation invites you to shift from ownership to stewardship—recognizing that all we have ultimately belongs to God, and we are called to manage it wisely and faithfully. We'll talk about the trap of building wealth re-actively—rooted in fear, scarcity, or comparison—and how that keeps us from experiencing peace, contentment, and the richness God intends. I’ll share how this shift in mindset isn’t about guilt or restriction. Instead, it’s about alignment. It's about finding calm in your finances because you’ve placed them in their proper context—not as a source of ultimate identity or power, but as a tool entrusted to you for good. We’ll also explore how stewardship invites us to slow down, look inward, and ask better questions: What kind of life is truly worth building? What kind of person am I becoming in the process of managing this money? Am I cultivating wisdom, generosity, and peace—or just chasing control? Whether you’ve struggled with money anxiety, income guilt, or the pressure to "arrive," this episode is a gentle but clear call to redefine wealth from God’s perspective. It’s an invitation to see your finances as sacred ground—a space where trust, values, and intention meet. You’ll walk away with: A renewed vision of stewardship rooted in peace and responsibility Permission to let go of perfection and lean into curiosity and prayer Encouragement to view money as a way to reflect God’s heart—not just build a bank account This isn’t about shame or scarcity—it’s about becoming a wise steward who is deeply connected to purpose, provision, and peace. Let’s talk about what real wealth looks like when we remember it’s not ours to own—but ours to manage with care.

Choosing Joy on Purpose: How to Raise Your Emotional Set Point

In this uplifting and insightful episode, Bonnie and her six year old daughter Victoria discuss how to feel better on purpose. They share a personal story about an unexpected lice outbreak in her family that became a surprising catalyst for joy. Rather than dwelling in frustration, she and her children found delight in a spontaneous cupcake outing—highlighting a key message: you can choose how you feel about any situation. The episode explores the concept of raising your emotional set point—the idea that your default emotional state isn’t fixed, but trainable. Backed by neuroscience, the host shares studies showing that intentional practices like gratitude, meditation, and acts of kindness can actually rewire the brain toward more positive emotions. For example, research by Dr. Richard Davidson reveals that regular mindfulness and loving-kindness meditations can decrease activity in stress-related brain regions and increase emotional regulation. She emphasizes that most people live on emotional autopilot, defaulting to stress or overwhelm, and that our brains are biologically wired to scan for threats rather than joy. But unfamiliar doesn’t mean impossible. With consistent “emotional strength training”—like pausing to breathe, choosing gratitude, or savoring small moments—you can shift your emotional baseline over time. While acknowledging the helpful teaching from Brooke Castillo that life is “50/50”—half positive, half negative—the host offers a twist: while we can’t control life’s events, we can choose our emotional response to them. Even in hard moments, we can bring in peace, wonder, or joy, which transforms our lived experience. She also warns against tying emotional well-being to financial success. Emotional ease doesn’t come from having more money; it comes from training your nervous system to feel grounded, safe, and joyful regardless of circumstances. In fact, emotional strength helps you enjoy whatever level of financial success you achieve. Ultimately, the host encourages listeners to stop waiting for life to feel better and to start choosing better-feeling emotions now. Joy isn’t a fluke—it’s a skill you can practice. Through small, intentional shifts, you can raise your emotional set point and create a life that feels vibrant and deeply fulfilling. Key takeaway: Your emotional life is not at the mercy of circumstances—you have the power to shape it on purpose.

Money and Relationships: How to improve your money dynamic with your partner

In this episode of Meaningful Wealth, the host explores the intricate connection between romantic relationships and financial well-being, emphasizing that wealth-building is not just about strategies and numbers, but also about emotional intelligence, personal responsibility, and healthy dynamics with our partners. The central message is that our romantic partners are also our primary financial partners, and how we relate to one another around money significantly impacts our long-term wealth. The episode begins with an affirmation of personal responsibility: "I take 100% responsibility for my thoughts, feelings, and reactions." This sets the stage for the core theme — that the key to transforming financial dynamics in a relationship starts with shifting our own mindset. The host shares an anecdote about a friend who reframed her investment strategy around finding a financially compatible partner, highlighting how shared values around money can shape long-term success. Referencing Jane Austen and the historical necessity for women to marry for financial security, the episode contrasts that with today's greater autonomy — while still acknowledging that a partner's income and financial behavior remain crucial to mutual prosperity. Statistical data supports the episode's urgency: a 2021 U.S. study found that divorce can result in a 77% drop in wealth, with women disproportionately affected due to wage gaps and caregiving roles. On the flip side, a “marriage premium” exists, where long-term relationships can boost earning potential and wealth accumulation, especially when both partners support each other’s financial goals. To address problematic money dynamics, the host introduces a key concept from coach Brooke Castillo — the idea that relationships are built from our thoughts about the other person, not from their actions alone. We often operate with unspoken “manuals” — expectations we hold about how others should behave — and disappointment arises when they fail to meet these unspoken rules. Rather than attempting to control a partner’s behavior, individuals are encouraged to take full ownership of their own thoughts, emotions, and actions. The episode dives into a practical example: a man who believes his spouse is financially irresponsible ends up secretly hoarding money. His belief creates a cycle of distrust and secrecy. By consciously shifting to a more empowering thought — “I may not agree on every purchase, but I can trust my wife” — he opens the door to honest communication and collaboration. Listeners are encouraged to examine their own patterns without judgment — whether they avoid financial conversations, try to control spending, or defer entirely to their partner. Through curiosity and detachment, they can shift their behavior, leading to changes in the entire dynamic. Ultimately, building wealth as a couple isn’t just about aligning on budgets and investments. It’s about emotional maturity, willingness to feel discomfort, and intentional belief work. Partners are urged to ask: Who do I want to be in this relationship? The episode concludes with a call to approach money conversations with curiosity, compassion, and full responsibility — because wealth begins from the inside out.

Parenting on Purpose: increasing your intentionality as a mom

In this episode, Bonnie speaks with a mindset coach and mother Monica McDermott Dearing about the common struggles moms face in balancing work and home life. The conversation centers around the overwhelm modern mothers experience and the unrealistic pressure to "do it all." The guest emphasizes that managing a career and a household amounts to two full-time jobs, and expecting oneself to juggle both flawlessly is unsustainable. Key takeaways include: Intentional Prioritization: Moms are encouraged to examine their responsibilities and choose what can be delayed or let go. It's not about doing more, but doing what matters most with intention. Mindset Shift: Much of the pressure stems from internalized beliefs about motherhood, often shaped by how we were raised. Questioning and redefining these expectations can be empowering. Shared Responsibility at Home: The guest and host discuss the importance of communicating household expectations with partners. While the host shared that she set clear expectations with her spouse early on, the guest admitted that she initially took on the default parent role. Over time, she learned to release control and appreciate her partner's contributions in his own way. From Resentment to Gratitude: A major shift came when the guest stopped seeking validation for doing it all and instead turned inward to acknowledge her own efforts and to genuinely recognize her husband’s contributions. This shift allowed for healthier, more productive conversations about dividing household labor. The episode is a powerful reminder that intentionality in motherhood starts with self-awareness, re-examining societal narratives, and building partnership through mutual appreciation and clear communication.

22: Financial Security vs. Fear: Where True Safety Begins

In this episode, we explore one of the most universal human desires: the need for financial security—and how, for many of us, fear clouds our sense of safety, even when we have more than enough. We often believe that once we hit a certain number in our savings or investments, we’ll feel secure. But time and again, I’ve seen clients, friends, and even millionaires who still live in anxiety despite having plenty. Why? Because security is not something money can provide. Security is a feeling—and feelings come from our thoughts. I reflect on Mother Teresa’s interpretation of the Beatitudes, particularly “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” She explained that those who are materially poor often experience a closeness to God because they must place their trust not in wealth, but in divine provision. That perspective moved me deeply. It reminded me that while wealth can be a blessing, it can also become a false refuge—tempting us to place our trust in money instead of ourselves, our community, or God. I also share stories from my husband’s family in Venezuela, where hyperinflation has made traditional financial advice irrelevant. In a country where the average wage is $4 a month, saving cash is futile. Instead, people rely on tangible assets and creative survival strategies. Their stories highlight an essential truth: the rules can change overnight. Financial security is never guaranteed, no matter where you live. This brings us back to the core message: true security must be anchored within. I walk through what it really means to feel financially safe: it’s not about external stability, it’s about internal belief. I share mindset tools to help listeners shift their thoughts from fear to empowerment, including one of my favorite affirmations: “I can handle anything that comes my way.” I talk about how our physiology—how we stand, breathe, and carry ourselves—can change our emotions, helping us access the calm and clarity needed to make wise financial decisions. When you feel secure from the inside out, you are less reactive to news headlines or market drops. You’re more likely to stay invested through uncertainty, take aligned financial risks, and use money as a tool—not a safety net. Practical steps like knowing your numbers, making a plan, and learning about investing matter. But they must be built on a foundation of inner stability. We end with a powerful reminder: Financial security is not a number in your bank account. It’s a mindset. A belief. A choice. When you develop this inner strength, your outer financial life transforms. To go deeper and build both internal confidence and external financial power, join me inside my coaching program. You’ll learn to use money consciously and align it with your values and vision for a meaningful life.

21: The joys of frugal living: maximizing fulfillment from what you have

In this episode, I reflect on how a financial challenge—living on one income during maternity leave—became an unexpected source of joy, growth, and connection. When my husband and I realized our household income would be cut in half, we had to make major changes. We combined our finances for the first time, cut unnecessary expenses like subscriptions and dining out, and restructured our lifestyle. Surprisingly, this shift didn’t feel like deprivation—it felt empowering. We discovered that frugality isn’t about lack; it’s about intention, creativity, and appreciation. As defined by Vicki Robin, frugality means getting full value from everything you have and cultivating a high joy-to-stuff ratio. Instead of constantly chasing “more,” we learned to find pleasure in using what we already had—like creating meals from pantry staples or rediscovering old clothes. This episode also explores the difference between frugality and minimalism: frugality focuses on thoughtful use and enjoyment of resources, while minimalism emphasizes reducing quantity. Frugality, for me, aligns with values of stewardship, sustainability, and connection—with the planet and with others. I share 10 practical tips for living a frugal and fulfilling life, including tracking spending, practicing gratitude, avoiding emotional spending, buying secondhand, and sharing with neighbors. Ultimately, frugality helped us live better—not just cheaper—by aligning our choices with what truly matters. I invite you to embrace frugality not as a sacrifice, but as a joyful, intentional way of living. What are your favorite frugal habits? I’d love to hear your stories.

    20. What is an abundant mindset and how can it be cultivated

An abundant mindset is a way of thinking that recognizes there are always enough opportunities, resources, and wealth available. It contrasts with a scarcity mindset, which is rooted in fear and the belief that resources are limited. Shifting to an abundant mindset allows you to see possibilities, generate creative ideas, and take action that aligns with your true desires rather than fear. How Affirmations and Mindset Shape Your RealityAffirmations are powerful tools for rewiring thought patterns. By consciously repeating positive statements, you can replace limiting beliefs with empowering ones. Pairing affirmations with visualization and emotion strengthens their impact, helping you believe in and attract abundance. Our thoughts influence our emotions, which drive our actions and shape our outcomes. If you focus on scarcity, your mind reinforces fear and inaction. But when you train your brain to focus on abundance, you start noticing opportunities and taking action that leads to better results. Daily Practices for an Abundant MindsetTo maintain an abundant mindset, it’s essential to develop daily habits that train your brain to think more positively: Affirmations: Intentional thoughts that reinforce belief in abundance. Examples:My income is constantly increasing, and I welcome it with gratitude. I am surrounded by love, joy, and endless possibilities. Visualization: Envisioning yourself already living in abundance shifts your energy and strengthens belief. Cathy Heller’s meditations help create this mental shift. Gratitude Journaling: Research shows practicing gratitude improves mental and physical health, reduces stress, and rewires the brain for positivity. A simple practice is writing down what you’re grateful for daily. Giving: Generosity reinforces abundance by helping us recognize how much we have. The Bible’s “Give, and it will be given to you” (Luke 6:38) reflects the idea that wealth isn’t just money but overall well-being. In Canada, charitable giving also provides tax benefits, making generosity financially rewarding. Final ThoughtsAn abundant mindset isn’t just about money—it’s about trusting that you are enough and that opportunities will come when you align your thoughts, emotions, and actions with abundance. Consistently practicing affirmations, visualization, gratitude, and giving can help shift your perspective and improve your results. Remember: What you focus on grows. Start small, stay consistent, and see how your mindset—and your life—transforms. If you enjoyed this episode, share it with someone who could use more abundance. Reach out to me if you need help implementing these practices—I’d love to hear from you! bonnie@meaningfulwealthcoaching.com
