    America needs more electricity. Developers are proposing hundreds of gigawatts of new generation and battery storage. So why can it take more than five years for a new power project to go from an interconnection request to commercial operation? In this episode of the Clean Energy Edge Podcast, Russ breaks down what actually happens when a large power project tries to connect to the grid. We look at interconnection studies, transmission capacity, grid upgrades, utilities and regional grid operators, project withdrawals, and why connecting hundreds of megawatts isn't as simple as finding the nearest transmission line and plugging into it.     Episode 107: The Battery Storage Boom: What MW and MWh Actually Mean

    Battery storage is being added to the U.S. electric grid at a remarkable pace. But understanding what a battery can actually do requires understanding two numbers: megawatts and megawatt-hours. In this episode of the Clean Energy Edge Podcast, Russ Bates breaks down the difference between MW and MWh, why battery duration matters, and what it really means when we describe a battery as a two-hour, four-hour, or eight-hour system. Batteries can respond quickly, shift electricity to when it's needed, support the grid, and help meet periods of peak demand. But they don't generate electricity, and they can't deliver their rated output indefinitely. So can batteries replace power plants? For certain functions and certain periods of time, absolutely. But that's not the same as replacing everything a power plant does. As electricity demand continues to grow, battery storage is going to be an increasingly important part of the solution.     Episode 104: Running Out of Time? A Faster Way to Build Utility-Scale Solar

    A utility-scale solar project can look great on paper - but what happens when the schedule becomes the problem? Whether you're targeting a specific commercial operation date, working toward an incentive deadline, or simply trying to get generation online faster, construction strategy can have a major impact on whether that schedule works. And that's something that needs to be considered early in project development... not after construction is already underway. In this episode of The Clean Energy Edge Podcast, we look at how the Maverick solar deployment system changes the construction equation.     Episode 102: America’s Electricity Demand Is Surging. Can We Keep Up?

    America needs a lot more electricity — and sooner than many people realize. NERC’s latest projections show 10-year summer peak demand growth at 224 GW, more than 400% of what it was projecting just three years earlier. But having new generation proposed doesn’t mean that power will actually be online when we need it. New gas plants, nuclear facilities, transmission projects and even grid interconnections takes years. A power plant that comes online in 2033 doesn’t solve a power problem in 2029. In this episode of The Clean Energy Edge, we look at the growing gap between electricity demand and how quickly new generation can actually be deployed — and why speed-to-power is becoming one of the most important issues facing the U.S. grid. In this episode of The Clean Energy Edge, I look at why Tesla's Supercharger network continues to lead in customer satisfaction, why networks like ChargePoint, EVgo, Electrify America and others have struggled to deliver the same consistent experience, and how the rest of the industry is finally improving. But Tesla's lead isn't guaranteed. IONNA is building a new nationwide network backed by major automakers, while BYD is pushing charging technology toward an entirely different level with charging speeds that could begin to rival the time it takes to fill up with gasoline.
