What happens when your brain traps you in a loop even on your best days? ⚠️ CONTENT WARNING: This episode contains discussion of suicidal ideation, suicide attempts, and suicide loss. For nearly 20 years, he lived in CTE fog after his nine-year career as a Team USA bobsled athlete. Confusion. Memory loss. Not recognizing people who loved him. Suicidal ideation that felt like truth. Doctors had no answers. Then he found hyperbaric oxygen therapy and woke up. William is a CTE recovery advocate, mental health professional, and founder of the first free CTE recovery center, opening in St. Louis to serve athletes, veterans, and anyone with undiagnosed brain injury. He's on a mission to change how America treats traumatic brain injury. In this conversation we cover: - Why CTE is misdiagnosed as mental illness (depression, bipolar, suicidal ideation) when it's actually physical brain damage - The first signs William didn't recognize: waking up not knowing where he was, not recognizing familiar faces, rationalizing it all - Why America's concussion protocol (go home, don't sleep) doesn't actually heal anything - How hyperbaric oxygen therapy works and why it restored clarity after 20 years of fog - The moment he came out of the chamber and could see colors again - The insidious mechanisms of CTE - Why this affects everyone: athletes, veterans, domestic violence survivors, anyone who's hit their head - Building the first free CTE recovery center and how to support it "I was cloudy for almost 20 years. I got in that chamber for one hour and it woke me up. Everything was so vivid and pretty. I didn't think I needed my glasses anymore." This episode bridges ESP's neuroscience layer: cognitive loops and the brain's capacity to move fluidly between states. Whether it's extreme sports, psychedelics, or brain injury recovery, the question is the same: how does consciousness get stuck, and what brings it back?
