Your pricing practices may be keeping you broke… Why?

Send us Fan Mail Your business can be busy and still not be healthy. In this episode of Business Growth Made Simple, Steve explains where profit often goes missing in a small business. It is usually not one big mistake. Instead, profit gets drained little by little through underpriced jobs, scope creep, and rising costs that never make it into your pricing. Steve explains why more sales are not always the answer, how owners accidentally give away margin, and why a simple financial system can help you stop guessing and start leading with clarity. You will learn why a full schedule does not always mean a profitable business, how underpriced jobs weaken a company, the difference between good service and poor boundaries, why scope creep needs a system, and how outdated pricing absorbs rising costs. If you are busy but still wondering where the money is going, this episode will help you identify what is draining profit. Your next step is simple: if you are not sure what’s next in your business, book a Serve Call and get clarity on the next right step. Tired of being late to, or worse missing your kids events? Thats what we help with our coaching. You’ll learn why better marketing starts with better clarity, how to identify your best customers, why repeat business and referrals matter, and how service contractors can build a simple plan to attract better clients, serve them well, and keep them coming back. So that you can do the things you want to do and make more money. When you are ready to move forward with help, here are some ways you can work with us. Thee Two Week Test for Small Business Owners

Send us Fan Mail Could your business run without you for two weeks? For many small business owners, the honest answer is no. The business may be growing, serving customers, and producing revenue — but if every decision, approval, customer issue, people problem, process, or financial question still runs through the owner, the business is still owner-dependent. In this episode, Steve talks about the hidden cost of building a business on the back of the owner and why the real issue is often not a people problem, a time problem, or a discipline problem. It is usually a systems problem. You’ll learn the six core systems every small business owner needs in order to reduce owner-dependence and create more breathing room: VisionMissionValuesPeopleOperationsFinanceSteve also introduces the “two-week test” — a simple way to see whether your business can operate without your constant involvement. If you are a small business owner doing $250K–$2MM in revenue and you feel like the bottleneck in your company, this episode will help you identify where your business may need stronger systems. The Owner Is the Bottleneck (And That’s a Systems Problem)

Send us Fan Mail Your business may depend on you more than you realize. Every decision comes through you, every problem lands on your desk, and the team keeps waiting for your direction. That does not necessarily mean you have a bad team or that you are failing as an owner. It usually means the business is missing clear systems. In this episode of Business Growth Made Simple, Steve explains how owners become the default system for the entire company—and how to begin changing that without hiring a huge team or disappearing for a month. You will learn how owner-dependence shows up across six essential business systems: Vision, Mission, Values, People, Operations, and Finance. You will also learn why clear ownership matters, how tribal knowledge keeps the owner trapped in the middle, and how a simple “definition of done” can help turn what is in your head into a repeatable process. In this episode, you’ll learn: How to tell whether you have become the bottleneckWhy owner-dependence is usually a systems problemHow the six systems help a business run without constant owner involvementWhy unclear roles send every outcome back to the ownerHow documented expectations help your team make decisionsOne practical exercise you can use this weekNext step: Take the 6-Point Systems Quiz to see where your business is strong and where owner-dependence may still be hiding. Fire the Customer: They could be costing you more than just profits.

Send us Fan Mail Every business owner has one. The customer who calls at all hours, renegotiates after the work's already done, and talks to your team like they're beneath him. You keep him around because losing the revenue feels scarier than losing your peace. But your team is watching how you handle that account. Every invoice you keep writing teaches them something about what gets tolerated in your business, and your best people notice first. In this episode, Steve walks through three guardrails for knowing when a customer's crossed the line from difficult to done, plus what happened when one owner finally made the call. Your Hiring Practices are Keeping you Broke!

Send us Fan Mail If you're constantly putting out fires with your team, the fire didn't start on the job site. It started in the interview, with a hire you made fast because you were desperate to fill the seat. Every one of those fast hires costs you later. Retraining, redone work, customers who stop calling and never say why. Skill got them hired. Character is what you're stuck with, and character doesn't train up in six months. In this episode, Steve walks through the one filter to run before your next hire, skill gap or character gap, plus what changed for one owner who used to hire on gut feeling and open availability. Ready to run the numbers on what your last hire cost you? Book a free Serve Call, or grab the free checklist, Is Your Business Already Your Mission, at genesisbusinessstrategies.com. It’s Not Your Marketing. It’s Who You’re Marketing To!

Send us Fan Mail Most service contractors think they have a marketing problem. But what if the real problem is not the marketing? What if the real problem is who you are marketing to? In this episode of Business Growth Made Simple, Steve breaks down why many service business owners are throwing good marketing at the wrong people. Using the picture of a farmer spreading seed, Steve explains why some marketing never takes root, why some leads disappear when pressure shows up, and why the right clients are like good soil — they value your work, trust your process, pay on time, come back, and refer others. If you are tired of chasing the wrong leads, competing only on price, starting from zero every month, or wondering why your marketing is not producing the kind of clients you actually want, this episode will help you step back and think differently. You’ll learn why better marketing starts with better clarity, how to identify your best customers, why repeat business and referrals matter, and how service contractors can build a simple plan to attract better clients, serve them well, and keep them coming back.
