    The LORD, My Provider - Exodus 20:15

    Sunday, June 7, 2026 In this sermon on the 8th Commandment, “Do not steal,” Pastor Jacob shows that God’s command is about more than simply not taking someone else’s stuff. The command teaches us to love our neighbors, honor what belongs to others, and trust the LORD as our Provider. Stealing can happen by force, dishonesty, oppression, deception in business, or withholding payment. But beneath the action of stealing are deeper heart issues: fear that God will not provide, greed that always wants more, and bondage to patterns we cannot break on our own. The good news is that Jesus came to seek and save the lost. Like Zacchaeus, we can receive grace, be changed by Jesus, and live with open hands.

    A Lifetime of Faithfulness - Exodus 20:14

    Sunday, May 31, 2026 In this sermon, Pastor Jacob preaches from Exodus 20:14 and the 7th Commandment: “You shall not commit adultery.” Rather than treating this command as God stealing joy, Jacob shows that God is protecting what He designed to be good, beautiful, intimate, and life-giving. From Genesis 2, we see that God’s design for sexuality is covenant faithfulness: one man and one woman, in marriage, for a lifetime. But sin distorts marriage, desire, and identity, leading us to seek fulfillment outside God’s boundaries. Jesus deepens the command by exposing lust at the heart level, calling us to put sin to death. Yet the sermon ends at the foot of the cross, where sinners and sufferers can receive cleansing, grace, and new life in Christ.

From creation to new creation, the Sabbath teaches restless people to order their lives around God’s story and find true rest in Jesus. God created us to enter and enjoy His rest, but sin has made us restless—turning work into striving, productivity into identity, and control into a way of life. For Israel, the Sabbath was a weekly reminder that God created, redeemed, provided, and promised a greater rest still to come. That promised rest is fulfilled in Jesus, the Lord of the Sabbath, who invites the weary to come to Him. Because Christ has given us true rest, we can worship, stop, delight, extend rest to others, and live every day from the rest He provides.

    The Name Above All Names - Exodus 20:7

    Sunday, May 3, 2026 In this sermon from Exodus 20:7, Pastor Jacob preaches on the third commandment: “You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain.” Far more than a warning against careless language, this command calls God’s people to carry His holy name with reverence and integrity. God first reveals His covenant name, YHWH, to His people, showing that He is personal, self-existent, and sovereign. Because Christians bear the name of God, we are called to revere Him in our words, promises, and daily lives. We must represent Him truthfully, refusing to attach His name to lies, manipulation, or sin. Finally, as followers of Jesus, we are sent to carry His name to our neighbors and the nations, so the world would see His glory and worship Him alone.

    Right Worship - Exodus 20:4-6

    Sunday, April 26, 2026 In this sermon from Exodus 20:4–6, Pastor Jacob continues our study through the Ten Commandments by unpacking the second commandment: “You shall not make for yourself a carved image.” God does not leave worship up to our imagination, preference, or creativity. He alone defines how He is to be approached and worshiped. Yet this command also points us to a greater hope. Humanity was made in the image of God, designed to reflect His nature and character, but sin has distorted that reflection. The good news is that Jesus is the perfect image of the invisible God, broken for broken image-bearers. Through faith in Christ, we are forgiven, restored, and invited to worship the one true God in the way He has revealed.

    Sunday, April 19, 2026 This week at Valley Church, Gary Merksamer continued our Ten Commandments series by looking at the first commandment: “You shall have no other gods before me.” In Exodus 20, God reminds His people that He is the One who rescued them from slavery before He ever gave them commands. We explored how our hearts still drift toward false gods—comfort, success, money, family, approval, or self—and how those idols can never truly satisfy. But the first commandment is not only a command; it is also a promise that one day God’s people will walk with Him forever, face to face, with no rivals for our worship. Because Jesus fulfilled the law and rescued us from sin, we are invited to turn from lesser things and give our hearts fully to the one true God who alone is worthy.
