    Episode #31 Weaving Connections with Artist and Musician Ruby Tingle

    Hello and welcome to the grateful web art podcast with me Dr Jo Clements. Today I am delighted to be joined by the award winning multimedia artist, Musician, curator and performer Ruby Tingle. ​Tingles’ practice reconstructs the readymade and familiar into the fantastical, presenting unnatural histories, dreamworlds and new myths which blur the lines between science and cryptozoology. A fascination with the romance, folklore and creatures of wetlands habitat, herpetology, the botanical and the curious or hidden in nature, roots her material and conceptual investigation. Her Swamp princess 'persona' exists both in reality and performance- her daily life reovolving around the care of pet amphibians and reptiles, wildlife, and wandering her local nature reserve in ballgowns.     Episode #30 Weaving Connections with Artist Jez Dolan

    Hello and welcome to the grateful web art podcast with me Dr Jo Clements. Today I’m really pleased to be joined by artist Jez Dolan Jez is an artist living and working here in Manchester, and his practice explores the intersections between queerness, sexuality, identity and memory. He works across drawing, film, performance, printmaking and painting, and over the years his work has been exhibited widely across the UK and internationally. His work is held in numerous collections, including the British Museum, Manchester Art Gallery, the Government Art Collection, Bury Art Museum, the Leslie-Lohman Museum in New York, Soho House, the Schwules* Museum in Berlin and the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, among others. Jez was the first artist-in-residence at Manchester Art Gallery for the major exhibition Derek Jarman Protest! in 2021–22, and he’s the artistic director of IAP:MCR, the Manchester-based arts and heritage organisation presenting work across visual and performing arts by artists who identify as queer. He has recently curated the exhibition Re/Assemble, currently on at the People’s History Museum Manchester until 3 January 2027. The exhibition features specially commissioned artworks responding to the legacy of Section 28, exploring themes of protest and resilience, celebrating queer voices and creativity. These works are displayed alongside historic and contemporary artefacts from People’s History Museum’s collection, including protest banners and objects. Jez also plays double bass with Manchester-based art-folk troupe Sherpa-K, who are performing this Friday, 25 September 2026 alongside the exhibition at the People’s History Museum. https://www.jezdolan.com @jezdolan Hosted on Acast.     Episode #29 Weaving Connections with Artist Rachel Goodyear

    On this episode I speak to the wonderful artist Rachel Goodyear. Goodyear (b. 1978, Lancashire, UK) lives and works in Manchester and Salford  and is a long term active studio member of Islington Mill. Goodyear exhibits nationally and internationally with works held in a number of collections worldwide. Influenced by feminist surrealism, Goodyear creates a world that is quietly unsettling and often playful. Intricately rendered in pencil and watercolour on paper and recent expansions into oil paint on canvas her figures, plants and animals shift and overlap, caught in moments of searching, encountering and entangling. Solo exhibitions include Stirrings, The Grundy Art Gallery and Salford Museum and Art Gallery; Catching Sight, The New Art Gallery Walsall ; Approaching the Surface, Pippy Houldsworth Gallery, London; Restless Guests, The Drawing Center, New York; and Modifications of the Host, Yorkshire Sculpture Park.     Episode #28 weaving Connections with Artist and Educator Tracey Eastham

    On this episode I speak to artist and educator Tracey Eastham. Tracey is a contemporary artist, educator, and founder of Art School by Subscription, an innovative online learning platform that encourages creative exploration through an Art School pedagogy. With a passion for experimentation and concept led development Tracey has spent many years supporting artists in their creative journey. Alongside her work as a lecturer, she creates her own artwork which has spanned painting, drawing and collage and has developed projects, exhibitions and commissions around her main theme of landscape and nationhood.     Episode #27 Weaving Connections with Artist Sam Owen-Hull

    Today on The Grateful Web I’m joined by Sam Owen-Hull, an artist whose practice moves fluidly between painting, sculpture and textile work, creating richly layered pieces that explore contradiction, connection and the spaces where opposing forces meet. Her work brings together gestural painting and painstaking hand embroidery, combining instinctive mark-making with slow, careful construction. Alongside her studio practice, Sam is also a deeply committed educator who believes passionately in the power of creativity to build confidence, resilience and emotional wellbeing. Through projects including Art of Resilience with Manchester Art Gallery, she has worked with young people across Manchester to encourage critical thinking, curiosity and creative freedom.     Episode #26 Weaving Connections with Curator Will Marshall

    In today’s episode of @the_grateful_web Art Podcast I'm joined by curator Will Marshall.  Based in Manchester, Will has played an active role in the region's artist-led scene, previously working as a curator at Bankley Gallery and co-running the nomadic Scaffold Gallery, producing exhibitions in spaces across the North West. He is now the founder and director of Texture, an independent gallery established in 2025, presenting a thoughtfully curated programme of artists from both the North West and further afield. In this conversation, we explore the importance of artist-led initiatives, local support networks, and the communities that sustain creative practice. We discuss the value of creating your own opportunities, the realities of building a gallery from the ground up, and why DIY approaches remain vital in providing spaces where artists can meet, exhibit, experiment, and contribute to a thriving cultural landscape.     Episode #25 Weaving Connections with Artist Nicola Ellis

    Today on @the_grateful_web Art Podcast I’m joined by Nicola Ellis, an artist whose practice is deeply rooted in industry, collaboration, and materiality. Much of Nicola’s work has developed through her long-standing relationship with the Blackburn-based engineering company Ritherdon & Co, where she has worked alongside fabricators and factory workers to explore how knowledge, skill, and labour are embedded within materials and industrial processes. Alongside discussing the exhibition, we also talk openly about the importance of artist support, the Festival of Making, networks, collaboration, and creating sustainable ways for artists to continue working and developing outside increasingly fragile arts structures.  I had the privilidge of speaking to Nicola at her current exhibition Exercises in Knowing at HOME, Manchester a major new presentation that brings together sculpture, sound, and installation.
