Open Comments: S4 - Mini Episode: Communication: The Foundation of High-Performing Organizations with Ash

When communication breaks down, it rarely looks dramatic at first. It looks like a project that slowly drifts, a decision that gets “lost,” two teams building the same thing, or a stakeholder who feels blindsided. In this mini episode of Open Comments, we dig into why communication is one of the most underestimated drivers of organizational effectiveness and why more channels and more messages do not automatically mean better outcomes. We start by reframing the definition: communication is not the transfer of information, it is the creation of shared understanding. If people leave a meeting with different interpretations of priorities, roles, or expectations, the communication failed even if the update was delivered perfectly. From there, we walk through the strategic impact of effective organizational communication: clearer execution, stronger cross-functional alignment, better decision making, higher trust through transparency, and more resilience during change management and uncertainty. We also tackle three common misconceptions that sabotage internal communication strategy: the idea that great communicators are “born,” the myth that volume fixes confusion, and the habit of treating speaking as the whole job while ignoring listening. We then close with practical ways to strengthen communication across teams: set clarity from the outset, tailor the message to the audience, confirm understanding early, embrace simplicity, and build a culture of open and constructive dialogue.  Send us Fan Mail Copyright © The Open Group 2023-2026. Open Comments: S4 Ep.2 - Controls vs Speed: AI in the Enterprise with Ben Lingwood

AI is sprinting into the enterprise, and the biggest question is not “Can we build it?” It’s “How do we ship it fast without creating a mess we cannot unwind?” We sit down with Ben Lingwood, co-lead partner and CTO in PwC UK’s Tech Catalyst, to unpack the real-world tradeoffs behind control versus speed in enterprise AI adoption. We get concrete about what “good control” actually looks like inside an AI-enabled organization: choosing the right language model for the job, managing token pricing and runaway costs, and treating risk as something you design for from day one. Ben explains why AI testing cannot be a late-stage phase anymore, how observability and continuous monitoring catch issues before users see them, and why circuit breakers and human-in-the-loop operations matter when outputs go rogue. We also explore how Tech Catalyst runs experimentation safely with isolated labs, then converts learning into production-grade reliability with rigorous testing and guardrails. Along the way, we talk AI security threats like prompt injection and poisoned prompts, the importance of trusted data, and what happens as AI, cloud platforms, and DevOps rapidly converge. To close, Ben shares what he looks for in modern builders: T-shaped skills that combine engineering depth, commercial thinking, and strong human skills, plus lifelong learning as a daily practice. If you care about enterprise AI governance, AI risk management, and practical ways to move faster with confidence, this conversation is for you. Subscribe, share with a teammate, and leave a review with your biggest control versus speed challenge. Send us Fan Mail Copyright © The Open Group 2023-2026. All rights reserved.

Open Comments: S4 Ep.1 - Purpose, Curiosity, Mentorship, and Career Insights with Jon Johnson

Strategy gets celebrated for big ideas, but the hard part is everything that happens after the idea. In this episode, we sit down with Jon Johnson, a strategist and advisor who’s spent years helping federal programs and NASA teams navigate complexity, align priorities, and communicate in ways that actually move work forward. His career is anything but linear, and that’s the point: dozens of roles across government IT, procurement, policy, and public service give him the outside view that many organizations lack when they get too insular. We dig into what a strategist really does day to day, including the difference between offering options versus selling an agenda. Jon shares how strategic planning becomes useful only when it sets a clear North Star, invites real feedback, and turns vision and mission into action. We also talk about the most common leadership challenge he sees: people and communication. Different teams hear the same message differently, and leaders have to learn how to repeat, reframe, and adjust without losing the thread, especially as organizations scale. You’ll also hear Jon’s simple framework for motivation and measurement: purpose, goals, outcomes. It reshapes how you define success, moving from visible outputs to meaningful results. We close with the idea behind his Exchange podcast, built on the belief that conversation creates understanding and that strategy without action is just paper. Open Comments: S3 Ep.7 - The Interoperability Imperative: Exploring the OSDU® Data Platform Standard Version 1.0 and the Future of Energy Data with Curley Thomas

Your subsurface data might be your most valuable asset and your most expensive bottleneck. When data sits behind vendor-specific interfaces, every new workflow becomes another custom integration, another silo, and another delay for analytics and AI. We sit down with Curley Thomas, strategic product owner at Chevron and Work Group Lead for Standards and Certification in The Open Group OSDU® Forum, to unpack why the OSDU® Data Platform Standard Version 1.0  is a real milestone for the energy industry.  We get specific about what the standard changes: a stable, vendor-neutral, interoperable foundation with consistent behaviors for a defined set of APIs. Curley explains why predictability is the point, not the novelty of APIs, using a memorable aviation analogy that lands with executives and developers alike. We also break down the practical, day-to-day impact for operators, technology providers, and software builders, from lower integration costs and less vendor lock-in to faster deployment of digital solutions and a healthier ecosystem where interoperability becomes assumed rather than negotiated.  A major focus is certification and why it matters. Instead of every company running its own exhaustive testing to decide whether a platform behaves as promised, certification aims to create a measurable baseline with verification matrices and test scripts. We also talk candidly about what makes adoption hard in the real world: legacy application complexity, technical debt, data quality issues, governance gaps, and the people side of change management that demands cross-functional collaboration and executive sponsorship.  Register now for The Open Group Houston Summit (October 26-29, 2026) here: https://meet.opengroup.org/event/Houston2026/home.  Read Curley's blog here: https://blog.opengroup.org/2026/04/07/exploring-the-upcoming-osdu-data-platform-standard-version-1-0/ If you are passionate about energy data standards, data governance, and AI-ready data platforms, this conversation maps the path from “connecting systems” to “creating value.”  Send us Fan Mail Copyright © The Open Group 2023-2026.
