The Second Chair Is Not a Waiting Room | The Leadership Constant with Dr. Rufus Chambers

The Second Chair Is Not a Waiting Room In this eight-minute address, Dr. Rufus Chambers III speaks directly to two groups who need to hear this together — the leaders holding the weight from the second chair, and the senior leaders who depend on them. Drawing on more than 28 years of experience in commercial construction and organizational leadership, Dr. Chambers uses the structural engineer analogy to reframe what second chair leadership actually is — and what it costs an organization when it is under-resourced, under-trusted, or under-defined. This address is for executive pastors, chiefs of staff, campus directors, associate ministers, and organizational leaders who have ever wondered whether their seat counts. It is equally for senior pastors, CEOs, and board members who need an honest look at the architecture holding their vision together. In eight minutes you will hear why the second chair is the norm in leadership not the exception, why most organizational stalls are not vision problems but architecture problems, what the paradox at the heart of the second chair role actually means, and the one question every leader needs to sit with before this address ends. Dr. Rufus Chambers III is a ministry leadership consultant, systems architect, and the founder of Vision Engineering Collective. He holds a Doctor of Ministry in Global Leadership from George Fox University and works with pastors, ministry leaders, and organizations to build the structure that holds the vision. 25 Years Later: How We Learned to Grow Together (Ep 70 Audio)

What does it really take to build a marriage that lasts? In Part 2 of our 25th anniversary conversation, we reflect on the one word that has defined so much of our journey: together. We grew up together. Built careers together. Raised our daughters together. Navigated financial challenges, ministry, personal growth, disagreements, fear, faith, and countless seasons of change—together. And while it hasn't always been easy, we made a decision early in our marriage that there wouldn't be a Plan B. Now, after 25 years of marriage, we're looking ahead to what we call “Phase 3”—a season of rediscovering each other as our daughters become young adults, slowing down, simplifying life, staying curious about who we're becoming, and being more intentional about the years ahead. We also share one of our biggest lessons for couples: Close the back door. Be all in. Marriage isn't about never experiencing difficult seasons. It's about continuing to choose each other, allowing God to work through the changes, and remembering that what you're building can impact generations beyond you. Whether you're newly married, decades into your journey, or fighting through a difficult season, we hope our story reminds you that there can still be something beautiful on the other side. 🎧 Available now on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, YouTube, and wherever you stream.   About With Love, The Chambers Podcast:   Real faith. 25 Years Later: What Marriage Really Taught Us (Ep 69 Audio)

Twenty-five years ago, we stood before our family and friends and said, “I do.” Looking back now, we realize we had no idea just how much life, growth, change, faith, and love those two words would require. In Part 1 of our 25th anniversary conversation, we look back at who we were when we got married and ask a simple question: What would we tell those two young people today? We talk candidly about the people we were at 24 and 26, the expectations we brought into marriage, the importance of family and community, and the village that has walked alongside us through the years. We also reflect on how much we've both changed—and what it means to continue choosing each other through every new version of ourselves. After 25 years of marriage and 30 years together, one lesson stands above the rest: a lasting marriage isn't built on one decision made at the altar. It's built by making the decision to choose each other again and again. This episode is about marriage, but it's also about faith, family, friendship, community, gratitude, and learning to appreciate the moments we're living before they become memories. Whether you've been married 25 years, just getting started, or hope to build a lasting relationship someday, we hope you'll celebrate this milestone with us. ❤️ 25 years later... we'd still choose each other.   🎧 Available now on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, YouTube, and wherever you stream.   About With Love, The Chambers Podcast:   Real faith. Everybody Ain’t Toxic: Have We Taken Therapy Culture Too Far? (Ep 68 Audio)

Does everybody need therapy or do some of us just need to accept that sometimes life is hard? In this episode of With Love, The Chambers, Rufus and Jamila have a candid conversation about therapy, mental health, and how therapeutic language has become part of our everyday vocabulary. From toxic and narcissist to triggered, overstimulated, boundaries, and protecting my peace ~ are these terms helping us better understand ourselves, or are we sometimes using them to describe normal discomfort, disappointment, and hardship? As strong proponents of counseling, Rufus and Jamila share their very different personal experiences with therapy, including how counseling changed Rufus’s life as a teenager and why Jamila began therapy much later in adulthood.  This isn’t an argument against therapy. It’s a conversation about finding the balance between getting help when we need it and developing the resilience, accountability, and emotional tools we need to navigate life. So, what do you think: Has therapy culture made us healthier or have we sometimes confused discomfort with dysfunction? We Couldn’t Just Move On: Mourning With the Family of Nolan Xavier Wells (Ep 66 Audio)

Some stories are too heavy to ignore. In this special episode of With Love, The Chambers, Rufus and Jamila pause their regular conversations on leadership, marriage, and family to reflect on the tragic death of 18-year-old Nolan Xavier Wells. This is not an investigative episode, nor is it an attempt to speculate about an ongoing case. Instead, it's an honest conversation about grief, compassion, public mourning, community, race, media, and what it means to stand with a family experiencing unimaginable loss. Together, we discuss: • Why we couldn't continue with business as usual • The emotional weight carried by Nolan's parents and loved ones • Mourning with those who mourn • The impact of social media during times of tragedy • The responsibility of communities to support one another • The role of empathy, justice, and thoughtful dialogue • Why some moments require us to slow down and simply be present Our prayer is that this conversation honors Nolan's life, encourages meaningful reflection, and reminds us that behind every headline is a family deserving of dignity, compassion, and prayer. Can Your Marriage Survive the Calling Pt. 2 ft. Dr. Matthew & Dr. Latasha Nesbitt (Ep 65 Audio)

What happens when the calling gets bigger, the responsibilities multiply, and there never seems to be enough time for everything that matters? In Part 2 of our conversation with Dr. Matthew and Dr. Latasha Nesbitt, founders of Deeper Church LA, we go deeper into the realities of balancing marriage, family, ministry, entrepreneurship, and purpose. The Nesbitts share how they approached planting a church without sacrificing their marriage or losing their family in the process. From involving their children in major decisions to establishing family check-ins, setting goals for every role they carry, and learning to recognize the unique demands of each season, this conversation is filled with practical wisdom for anyone trying to build something meaningful without neglecting the people who matter most. We discuss: • Why every assignment requires an honest assessment • The importance of sharing the load in marriage and family • How to recognize the priorities of your current season • Why balance doesn’t always mean giving everything equal time • Setting goals for every role you carry • Creating intentional family check-ins • Supporting your spouse’s calling and purpose • Avoiding burnout while pursuing meaningful work • Why marriage itself should be treated as a ministry • Building an authentic relationship in private before presenting it in public One of the most powerful lessons from this conversation is simple: you can build something successful and still lose what matters most if you’re not intentional. Whether you’re building a ministry, business, career, family, or dream, this episode challenges us to assess what is in our hands, understand the season we’re in, and make sure our pursuit of purpose doesn’t come at the expense of the people we love. Because the goal isn’t simply to build something great. It’s to build it together. ❤️ Build with Love.   🎧 Available now on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, YouTube, and wherever you stream.
