81: The Weirdest Research of the Year

In this episode, Dr. Junaid takes a delightful detour from the usual pressures of clinical practice to explore the quirky, joyful side of science through the Ig Nobel Prizes, real research that first makes you laugh, then makes you think. He walks through some of this year's winners as well as some for the past, including a 1977 study on the aerodynamics of nose-blowing that every physician has unknowingly referenced, a psychology paper revealing why we love friends who are vicious to our enemies, and Italian research suggesting pizza might actually protect against illness, if it's made and eaten in Italy. This episode reminds us that reclaiming that sense of wonder, the kind that got us into medicine before the inbox took over, is worth protecting. This week's challenge: find the answer to one question you want to know, just because you want to know it, and let yourself have fun with it. 80: Let’s Turn the Tables - Measuring Admin Part 2

In this episode, Dr. Junaid continues his thought experiment from part one, exploring what happens when administrators miss the mark on decisions that affect clinical workflow, and reintroduces the concept of administrative harm, a term coined in the New England Journal in 2022 and studied across thirty-two organizations where only nine percent encouraged transparency in administrative decision-making. He introduces the click budget, a four-part standing policy that requires new required fields to be click-neutral, burden-estimated in advance, sunset-dated, and owner-assigned, emphasizing that physicians and APPs are the only sensors in the system and must measure and voice their own numbers to drive change. He closes by connecting this systemic work to the immediate, practical relief offered in Charting Conquered Blueprint, a self-paced program designed to help clinicians build workflows that make charting a byproduct of real-time decisions rather than a second shift. 79: Let’s Turn the Tables - What If We Measured Them

In this episode, Dr. Junaid introduces a thought experiment that starts with humor but quickly becomes serious: what if administrators were measured the way physicians and APPs are? Drawing on his dual role as a practicing med-peds physician and ambulatory IS medical director, he walks through a series of metrics all applied to a composite character he calls VP Jones. The exercise reveals a concept called administrative harm, defined in a 2022 New England Journal of Medicine article and studied across 32 organizations in JAMA Internal Medicine, where only 9% of participants said their organization encouraged transparency in administrative decision-making. Dr. Junaid argues the real problem isn't that administrators are bad people, but that they make decisions without feedback loops, and without a scoreboard, indifference and ignorance look identical from the clinician's perspective. This is part one of a two-part series; next week he'll explore what the scoreboard could actually look like and what happens when you measure the human cost of administrative decisions. 78: I’ll Take My Burnout To Go, Extra Cheese

In this episode, Dr. Junaid unpacks more reasons why physicians are leaving medicine even as traditional burnout rates improve. Drawing on 2024 research from the AMA, Mayo Clinic, and Stanford published in JAMA Network Open, he walks through the data and examines why wellness programs often backfire when offered instead of structural change, and offers one actionable step any physician can take right now. He also shares the Physician Support Line (1-888-409-0141), a free, confidential, non-reportable resource staffed by volunteer psychiatrists who understand your work. Rest refills gas tanks; it cannot repair cracked engines, and this episode is about naming the crack so you stop blaming yourself for it. 77: Is Your AI Scribe Making Things Up?

In this episode, Dr. Junaid digs into a troubling report from Ontario's auditor general that tested 20 AI scribe vendors. He walks through the results of that report and the legitimate pushback. He argues that as these tools improve and error rates drop, physicians become less vigilant, creating a more dangerous blind spot: errors that now arrive fluent, confident, and invisible. This episode points out the issue that admins don't understand... AI scribes don't eliminate the documentation burden. The burden shifts to the quieter, unscheduled labor of verification, and right now, you are the entire safety system. 76: The Pumpkin Spice Latte Theory for Physician Wellness

In this episode, Dr. Junaid explores an unexpected question: why do we let ourselves get excited about a Pumpkin Spice Latte but struggle to build anticipation into our own lives? He unpacks the psychology behind Starbucks' most successful seasonal drink and turns the lens on physicians and APPs who have become so skilled at deferred gratification that many have forgotten to schedule joy's arrival. This is about reclaiming the ability to look forward to something for no reason other than that it makes you glad when it arrives. 75: The $52,000 You Donate Every Year - LYWAW Sessions 2 & 3

In this episode, Dr. Junaid shares highlights from sessions two and three of his live training Leave Your Work at Work, focusing on the hidden costs of after-hours charting and practical strategies to reclaim physician time. He breaks down how the average struggling physician donates roughly $52,000 worth of unpaid work annually, walks through why decision fatigue makes charting at 9 PM exponentially harder than finishing notes immediately after visits, how CMS regulations actually support leaner documentation than most physicians believe, and why longer notes create more legal liability, not less. The episode closes with details about his group coaching program Charting Conquered, which starts September 8th.
