Episode 53: Don't Miss the Miracle

Join us as we dive into three well-known stories of Jesus' earthly ministry with a common thread running throughout each of them. At the Pool of Bethesda, Jesus asks a paralyzed man if he wants to be healed. A question that still holds spiritual relevance for us today. “Do you want to be healed?” Because healing means you can’t continue to lie on a mat that has become all too comfortable and familiar. Healing comes with a stewardship of that healing, that demands a different life. Jesus brings healing to this man’s story, only for the Pharisees to scold the formerly paralyzed man for carrying his mat on the Sabbath as Jesus had instructed him to do. The Pharisees were so wrapped up in the fact that this man had broken a law that they had put in place to “put a fence around” God’s law, that they completely missed the miracle of this man being able to walk for the first time in 38 years! Conversely, a Centurion, an enemy of the Jewish people, is able to recognize the power and authority of Jesus to heal his servant without even entering his home. The Pharisees who had spent a lifetime studying and memorizing scripture missed Jesus, while a Gentile and enemy of the Jewish people displayed outstanding faith. Finally, we see a sinful woman enter a party in a position of shame, pour out her tears and offerings at the feet of Jesus, and wipe His feet with her hair. If she had done this to any other rabbi, she would have ben met with scorn and a harsh rebuke, but Jesus is different. He can be trusted with our tears. He is honored by our sincere offerings. He meets her in this moment, forgives her of her sins, and sends her away in peace, despite the disdain and the derision this would be met with from others in the room. Jesus can be trusted with our tears. He can be trusted with our hurt. He is undeniable proof that God loves us more!

Episode 47: The Power to Heal, the Authority to Forgive, and the Cost of Speaking Truth

In this episode, we walk through three moments in Jesus' early ministry that reveal His authority, His Compassion, and His boldness in speaking Truth no matter the consequence. We begin with the healing of a man with leprosy, a man once isolated and untouchable, who is restored by Jesus and instructed to tell no one but to go and show himself to the priest as the Law required. Yet even in the restraint Jesus calls for, his life becomes a testimony that cannot be contained. When you've been changed by Jesus, it shows. We, then, step into a crowded house where a paralyzed man is lowered through the roof by faithful friends. Before anything else, Jesus looks at him and says, "Son, your sins are forgiven." In this moment, Jesus first addresses the man's greatest need, because the greatest need of all mankind is the need for a Savior to rescue us from our sin. When the man rises, takes up his mat, and walks out in full view of everyone, his life becomes undeniable evidence of Jesus' authority and power. Finally, We turn to Nazareth, Jesus' hometown, where the people who have always known him are initially amazed by Him. But when Jesus begins to speak Truth to them, their amazement quickly turns to offense. Despite all of the miracles and incredible teachings, Jesus faces rejection in the very place He grew up. Rejection is something we, too, may face as Christ-followers, and we take heart from Jesus' example. These stories remind us that encounters with Jesus leave us changed - healed, forgiven, and set free. His Truth is too good not to share, no matter the cost.
