From Army to Firefighter: Matt Rust on Service, Scouting & Saving Nutsack the Cat

Send us Fan Mail From drug raids to rescuing a cat named Nutsack, Matt Rust has had one heck of a career! On this episode of the Closing Time Podcast, David Monsour sits down with Army veteran, former Fayette County Sheriff's Office narcotics investigator, and current Fayette County firefighter Matt Rust for a hilarious, honest, and sometimes serious conversation about life in public service. Matt shares how a chance conversation at Wendy's led him into the Army, how he ended up spending 11 years in law enforcement, and why he eventually traded his badge for a fire truck. We get into what firefighters REALLY do all day, the strangest calls he's responded to, the emotional toll of being a first responder, and why helping people is about a whole lot more than fighting fires. But that's just the beginning! We also talk about raising kids in today's world, the lessons learned through Scouting America, the value of earning Eagle Scout, firefighter cooking, the rivalry between cops and firefighters, and whether a grown man should have to give up a baseball he caught to a kid. And yes, there's a story about rescuing a cat named Nutsack. You can't make this stuff up. In this episode: From the Army to the Sheriff's Office to the Fire Department What firefighters actually do between fires The craziest animal rescues and emergency calls Dealing with the difficult side of being a first responder Raising independent kids and the value of hard work How Scouting America builds leadership and confidence Life inside a firehouse, from cooking to camaraderie Why Matt considers public service a privilege Pull up a chair. Part 2. Loving Without Fixing: Chris Patton on Parenting Adult Children

Send us Fan Mail Loving Without Fixing: Chris Patton on Adult Children, Grace, and Who Pastors the Pastor In part two of my conversation with Chris Patton, senior pastor of Southside Church, we explore what happens when parenting enters a season the church does not always talk about. The church offers plenty of guidance for raising children, but what happens when those children become adults and begin making decisions we would not choose for them? Chris and I discuss how parents can remain loving, supportive, and present without trying to control or continually change their adult children. We also examine why love can so easily become an effort to fix someone. What does it look like to maintain a meaningful relationship with a child, family member, or friend whose beliefs, lifestyle, or choices differ from our own? And what does it look like when the church handles those relationships with genuine grace rather than judgment? Finally, we turn the conversation toward Chris himself. Pastors are often contacted during the most painful and desperate moments of people’s lives. They hear the difficult stories, carry the emotional weight, and are frequently expected to have answers that no human being could possibly have. So who encourages the pastor? Who listens when the pastor is hurting? Who fills his bucket when so much of his life is spent pouring into everyone else? In this episode: Parenting after children become adultsLoving someone without trying to control themWhy love often turns into an attempt to change peopleStaying connected when someone chooses a different pathWhat grace looks like in real relationshipsWhat the church gets right and wrong about loving peopleThe emotional weight carried by pastorsWho pastors, encourages, and supports the pastorThis is part two of my conversation with Chris Patton. For the Southside: Chris Patton talks Southside churching and being known for what we are FOR.

Send us Fan Mail Known for What We’re For: Chris Patton on the Mission of Southside Church In part one of my conversation with Chris Patton, senior pastor of Southside Church, we explore the experiences that first led him into ministry and the path that eventually brought him to Southside. Chris explains Southside’s unique leadership structure, including how the local church operates and how its relationship with Andy Stanley and North Point Ministries works. We also spend time discussing the mission of Southside Church and the idea that Christians should be known more for what they are for than for what they are against. Chris shares what that philosophy looks like in practice and how the church hopes to serve and influence the surrounding community. Finally, we discuss one of the simplest but most important messages the church often fails to communicate clearly, especially to people who are skeptical of Christianity, disconnected from church, or unsure where they belong. In this episode: How Chris Patton got his start in ministryHow Southside Church’s leadership structure worksThe relationship between Southside and North Point MinistriesSouthside’s mission and directionBeing known for what the church supports rather than opposesWhat the church often fails to communicateCreating a church where people feel welcomed, valued, and understoodThis is part one of a two-part conversation with Chris Patton.
