Here’s something you should have learned a long time ago: getting attention is not the same thing as earning respect. You can say cruel, outrageous things and get of people to look at you. You can make people angry enough to comment, share, and talk about you. And for a while, that might feel like you matter. But you need to understand something: people paying attention to you does not mean they admire you. It does not mean they respect you. And it certainly doesn’t mean you’ve accomplished anything worth being proud of. There are easier ways to get attention than being decent, thoughtful, or talented. Any kid acting out in a classroom figures that out pretty quickly. Most of us eventually grow up and realize that being noticed for behaving badly isn’t a win. So enjoy the attention if that’s what you’re after. Just remember that one day the strangers will move on to somebody else, the comments will stop, and you’ll be left with the reputation you built and the things you were willing to say about other human beings just to keep people looking at you. That’s a pretty terrible trade. And someday, I suspect you’ll understand that.
