Yes Officer: One Guy, One Island, and a Grammy-Winning Producer Who Bought a Church Episode 41

Stick around to the end. The opening track from Yes Officer's brand new album — Ignore the Town Crier — plays in fullafter the credits. Jeremy Harnum is a one-man band from St. John's, Newfoundland making "loud and abrasive music for those who like loud and abrasive music." He grew up in a town of 450 people. Came out in 2018. Taught himself to record. Made three albums entirely alone. Then a Grammy-winning LA producer — the guy behind Adele, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, The Greatest Showman — bought an old church in Jeremy's tiny hometown and started a record label. Jeremy sent a cold pitch. That became Ignore the Town Cryer, out now. JR found this band while researching Newfoundland for a community theater production of Come From Away. Hefound a podcast called Off Da Rock Radio, went through 25 artists, and landed here. In part one, Gary hears four songs, from 2017 to the brand new single. In part two, Jeremy joins live. Susanna B: New York Soul, LA Grit, and a brand new song! Episode 40

Stick around to the end of this one. There's a prize. Susanna B is a New York-born, LA-based singer-songwriter with a voice that lands somewhere between Alanis Morissette and Sheryl Crow — and a story that goes way deeper than that. Daughter of a celebrated Broadway composer. Actress. Foster and adoptive mom. Led a weekly choir for formerly incarcerated men for three years. She's been making music through all of it. Only now does she have a team behind her. In part one, JR plays Gary four songs including her brand new single. In part two, Susanna joins live — and at the very end, she sent us something nobody else has heard yet. The Schwa: Two Guys, a Carport Studio, and a Song Nobody's Heard Yet Episode 39

JR asked Spotify's AI to find bands perfect for this show. This is one of them. The Schwa is Eric Intile and Cooper Phillips — two college friends from Greenville, South Carolina who met in 8th grade, graduated with music business degrees, built a recording and content studio in a carport, and are now releasing short, sharp power-pop songs that sound like the Black Keys, the Hives, and the Ramones raised them together. Their longest song right now is under two minutes. Their most played song has nearly 7,000 streams. And they showed up to this interview with a list of questions, a live setup, and a song that drops May 27th that nobody else on earth has heard yet. They also played "Stuck in the Middle" as a two-piece for the first time ever. Live. On the show. With no rehearsal. In part one, JR reveals the band to Gary. In part two, Eric and Cooper join live — and play. Hudson Rubin: Two Actors, One Fictional Band, and a Real Song in a Real Movie Ep# 38

They met on a Disney movie set in 2003. Reconnected 22 years later on the sequel. Started writing songs in between takes. Got one into the film. Now they're a real band.Hudson Rubin is Hayley Hudson and Danny Rubin — actress, singer, multi-instrumentalist, and a high school history teacher from San Diego whose brother is the new drummer for the Foo Fighters. Their music has fewer than 10,000 plays on Spotify. It sounds like it should have millions. In part one, JR reveals the band to Gary via a TikTok you have to see to believe. The Beard and the Bird: Rockabilly, Western Swing, and the World's Most Joyful Duo. Episode 37

The Beard and the Bird are Jon and Cat, a bi-coastal rockabilly/Western swing duo splitting their time between San Diego and upstate New York. Five songs on Spotify, a YouTube series filming bands in bars across the country, and a brand new single you're going to hear in this episode before anyone else does. We found them the best way possible — Uncle Ben's Remedy shouted them out mid-interview from the floor of a Buffalo record store. In part one, JR plays Gary everything: Ace of Spades, a Star Wars medley, originals, and a song written for a haunted house named Eloise. In part two, Jon and Kat join live to talk about all of it — and debut their new single "Waiting on May" right here, before its release. 🔗 Links ► The Beard and the Bird: www.thebeardandthebird.com ►Their YouTube Channel: @thebeardandthebird ► Every band we've featured: https://www.bynhopod.com ► Spotify playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1zT8HHOprlVgO78X9rjcQB?si=3db9230a4cf44316 ► Email: bynhopod@gmail.com ► Support & merch: https://www.bynhopod.com (click "Support") 0:00 - How Uncle Ben's Remedy Led Us Here1:56 - The Band: The Beard and the Bird4:55 - "Ace of Spades" — Their Version7:22 - Band Bio9:05 - Star Wars Medley13:09 - "Dust If You Must"18:06 - "Take the 219"25:48 - "Thankful"32:00 - "My Dearest Eloise"38:28 - Break: Just Waters1:41:36 - PART 2: Jon and Cat Join Live47:21 - Are You Really This Happy?51:54 - San Diego to Buffalo: The Haunted House Story55:30 - "Dust If You Must": Who Does the Cleaning?56:34 - Punk to Rockabilly: The Pipeline2:01:52 - Covers vs. Originals5:17 - The Most Surprising Covers8:16 - Virginia Is on the Map10:45 - Cat's Rules for Playing a Gig14:13 - WORLD PREMIERE: "Waiting on May"17:29 - Back From the New Song18:34 - The Asylum Street Spankers21:33 - The Murder Face & the Gum Rule25:31 - "Traveling Through Live": How It Works30:02 - Rising Tide: Why They Do All of This37:12 - New Album & Physical Media Plans41:52 - Outro49:39 - POST-CREDITS: "To Be Determined" by the Riveting Tidbits

MJT: Three Brothers, 20 Years, and the Most Criminally Underplayed Band on Long Island. Episode 37

Three brothers from Long Island. Started playing jazz together when the youngest was eight. Won Amateur Night at the Apollo — multiple times. Opened for Slash and Living Color. Endorsed by Paul Reed Smith. Most played song on Spotify: 15,000 streams. The band is MJT. They were the Michael Jazz Trio until they decided they'd rather be like the Foo Fighters. The jazz crowd was not thrilled. They did it anyway. In part one, JR takes Gary from a 2009 jazz festival video of three kids to the full-volume modern version of Daydreamer — and it's all uphill from there. In part two, Matt and David join live to talk about the pivot, the grind, the Paul Reed Smith story, and what it took to get from the Apollo to the Summer of 99 cruise with Living Color. Their first three EPs are on Bandcamp. Everything else is on Spotify. April 30th at Ripple Rays in Richmond, VA. Dr. Sure's Unusual Practice: Music for Oddballs and Outsiders — says "NO" to Spotify. Ep: 36

JR found this band using AI. He's going to have to tell them that. They're not going to love it.Dr. Sure's Unusual Practice is a five-piece synth-punk art rock band from Melbourne, Narrm, Australia — and they are exactly as described on their website: rock music for oddballs and outsiders. Henry Rollins put their 2024 album Total Reality in his top 10 of the year. Rolling Stone put it in their top 50. They've toured with King Gizzard, Tropical Fuckstorm, and Cosmic Psychos. And about a month ago, they pulled all their music off every streaming platform — Spotify, Apple Music, all of it — because they refuse to contribute to what they called "the war machine." You can find them at their Bandcamp. You can find them on YouTube. And now you can find them right here.In part one, JR plays Gary four songs cold: No Pigs (their newest single, pure Melbourne punk fury), How Can Anybody Be Sober These Days? (Dead Kennedys meets Devo filtered through Oingo Boingo), Infinite Growth (live from the Remember the Future concert film — better sound than most studio albums), and Keeps Ya Head Up (Gary's choice, brand new for both of them). Then JR plays Dougal's own Facebook video explaining exactly why he pulled the music off Spotify, word for word, no filter. In part two, Dougal Shaw joins live from Melbourne on a Monday morning, trying not to check the news. They get into everything: how JR found the band via AI and why Dougal thinks that's a rare W even though he thinks AI is mostly a catastrophe, what it actually felt like the day he saw Spotify cleared out (a wave of relief), the AI-generated album that appeared under their band name and had to be fought down, the full story of shooting the Escalator Man video — one take, the longest escalator in the Southern Hemisphere, a guy in a suit who called the cops, and no permit — why DIY is becoming DIT (Do It Together) for him, what the new album More Is the Law is about, and whether Americans will ever get to see them live (complicated, for reasons involving visa applications and a very active social media presence).Post-credits: Reality Changer, a brand new song from the upcoming album, performed live at PBS Melbourne.Watch on YouTube for the full video experience — this is a band where the visuals are not an afterthought.🔗 Links► Dr. Sure's Unusual Practice: https://www.drsuresunusualpractice.com/► Dr. Shore's Mart House Records on YouTube: search  @MarthouseRecords  ► Every band we've ever featured: https://bynhopod.com► Our complete Spotify playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1zT8HHOprlVgO78X9rjcQB?si=562b19d1be084be7► Email us: bynhopod@gmail.com► Support the show & grab merch: https://bynhopod.com (click "Support")YouTube Chapters:0:00 - AI Found This Band1:13 - Introducing Dr Sure's Unusual Practice2:27 - They're Off Spotify Now3:46 - Where to Hear Them8:13 - "No Pigs"11:04 - Gary Reacts15:18 - "How Can Anybody Be Sober These Days?"17:45 - Devo / Dead Kennedys / Boingo21:50 - "Escalator Man"24:28 - Gary Reacts Again27:41 - "Infinite Growth" Live33:20 - Why They Left Spotify44:30 - PART 2: Dougal Joins48:43 - How AI Found Them52:30 - AI, Ethics, and War55:58 - Fake AI Album + Spotify Issues1:02:07 - Bandcamp vs Streaming1:12:19 - Will They Tour the US?1:22:15 - From Solo Project to Full Band1:40:34 - New Album Talk1:45:42 - Playing a New Song1:47:49 - "Escalator Man" Video Story2:00:05 - "How Can Anybody Be Sober" Video Story2:08:43 - Gary's Genre Comparison2:59:11 - Outro3:02:28 - Post-Credits: "Reality Changer"Hashtags:#BandsYouveNeverHeardOf #BYNHOPod #DrShoresUnusualPractice #MelbourneMusic #SynthPunk #ArtRock #PunkRock #IndieMusic #HiddenGems #Bandcamp #AntiSpotify #MusicDiscovery #AustralianMusic #Oddballs #VideoPodcast #spotify #spotifyplaylist #freepalestine #nokingsprotest
