I am going to explain something because it has been really hard to explain. When I tell it to organize the album, it organizes the top layer. It does not go into the album to see if there is an album inside the album. It loves creating albums. It loves creating documents and duplicates. A mess. It is a mess. I want to be specific about this, because when I say mess people picture a messy desktop, and that is not what this is. What this is, is work disappearing one level below where anybody is looking. THE TOP LAYER PROBLEM You give a system a folder and you tell it to organize the album. It opens the folder, it sees what is sitting on the surface, and it arranges that. Then it tells you it is done. What it did not do is go inside. It did not check whether there was an album inside the album. It did not check whether the song folder had another song folder in it holding the only copy of something. It arranged the surface and it reported success, and both of those things were true, and the work underneath was still buried. Then it makes it worse in the most polite way possible. It loves creating. Give it a problem and it will make you a new folder, a new document, a duplicate of something that already existed under a slightly different name. Now you have two of everything and no way to know which one is the real one. I lost things this way. Not deleted, lost. Sitting in a folder inside a folder inside a folder, in a place nothing would ever think to look, while a perfectly organized top layer sat above it telling me everything was fine. I STOPPED ASKING IT TO TIDY The instinct is to write a better instruction. Be more specific. Say go all the way down. Say check inside every folder. I tried that for months and it works exactly once, in the session where you said it, and then the session ends and the next one has never heard of you. So I stopped asking, and I started writing laws. A law is different from an instruction. An instruction is a thing you say. A law is a thing that is written down, in a file, on my drive, that any system has to read before it is allowed to touch my work. It does not live in a chat. Chats end. My drives do not. And every step, I make it take notes. I make it tell itself what it did wrong and what it needs to fix, and I make it write that down where the next one will find it. Not so I can read it. So the next one cannot repeat it. THE ADDRESS SYSTEM Here is the part that actually solved it. Every file I own carries its own address in its name. Language, voice, album, song, and the stage it has reached. FF11 is French female, album one, song one. The name is not a label sitting on top of a folder that explains it. The name is the explanation. I do not need the folder to tell me what the file is, because the file already told me. Which means I can move it, copy it, hand it to somebody, put it on a different drive, and it never stops knowing what it is. The stage is the piece people miss. Every file carries how far it has come, and a higher stage proves every stage below it happened. I never have to read a history backwards, or open something to find out whether it was finished. I look at the name and I know. Eight languages. Hundreds of songs. And I can find any one of them without opening a folder, because there is nothing to open. The name is the index. WHY THE IDENTIFIER LIVES INSIDE MY FILE My songs carry an ISRC, the code that identifies a recording everywhere in the world. I bought my own codes. I did not borrow a distributor’s. And I do not only type them into a form. I embed them inside the audio file itself. I learned that one the hard way. I had a form filled out correctly and files that had never been touched, and for a month I believed those were the same thing. They are not. A platform field can be wrong, a platform can change, a company can go away. A file cannot argue with what is written inside it. So the proof travels with the work. Wherever the file ends up, on whatever drive, in whoever’s hands, it is still carrying who made it. THE METADATA IS THE PROOF Everything I do is about being the human guiding the system. I do not want somebody else’s blueprint. I want my own. Everything original to me, so if anything ever comes back to me, they cannot say this is not mine. I have too much metadata. That is not paranoia, it is the job. When the work is made with a machine, the question of whose it is gets asked more, not less, and the answer cannot be a feeling. It has to be a record. Mine is a record that starts before the song exists and does not stop. This is the future. Keeping up with your metadata is going to be very important. It is everything. WHAT THIS ACTUALLY GIVES YOU A catalogue that can be searched, audited and automated without a database. A system that survives a change of model, a change of vendor, a change of platform, because the knowledge does not live in any of them. It lives in my file names and inside my files, on my drives. And a session that ends without taking anything with it, which anyone who has watched a good long conversation disappear will understand. With AI you do not have to follow anybody else’s rules.
