    Luigi Mangione Pleads Guilty in Federal Court, Then Moves to Dismiss the New York Murder Case

    Luigi Mangione pleaded guilty Friday morning in Manhattan federal court to two counts of stalking resulting in death in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. There was no plea agreement and no agreed sentencing range. Reading a statement to U.S. District Judge Margaret Garnett, Mangione said he shot Thompson and that he knew what he was doing was illegal; his attorney Karen Friedman Agnifilo said he has accepted full responsibility for Thompson's death. Members of Thompson's family, including his mother, sat in the front row alongside UnitedHealthcare executives. Garnett found Mangione fully competent to plead and told him he faces a maximum of life in prison, that he would serve at least 85 percent of any term, and that a state sentence could be added to it. U.S. Attorney Jamie McDonald said prosecutors intend to seek the maximum. Within the hour, Mangione's lawyers moved to dismiss the New York murder case on double jeopardy grounds, arguing dual prosecutions arising from the same event violate his rights.     Lindsay Clancy Trial: the Courtroom Cleared Twice, Luigi Mangione's Surprise Federal Hearing, Tiffany Haddish Pleads Guilty to DUI

    Jurors in Lindsay Clancy's murder trial saw autopsy photographs of Cora, 5, and Dawson, 3, on Wednesday, and the courtroom was cleared twice as Clancy sobbed at the defense table. Two medical examiners testified about all three children; defense attorney Kevin Reddington asked no questions on cross. Earlier that day, Reddington drew out a State Police investigator's testimony that colleagues had discussed a theory that a defense-retained psychologist prompted Clancy to tell her then-husband she heard voices — and got the witness to confirm he never overheard the conversation and that there was no investigative basis for it. A counselor also testified that Clancy was referred to a Rhode Island postpartum program in December 2022. Clancy has pleaded not guilty to three counts of first-degree murder and contests criminal responsibility.     Lindsay Clancy's Nurse Raised Bipolar Six Weeks Before the Killings, Jury Selection Continues in the Tupac Trial, Gotti's Grandson Reports

    A psychiatric nurse practitioner testified that she raised the possibility of an underlying bipolar disorder with Lindsay Clancy and her then-husband on December 6, 2022 — about seven weeks before Clancy killed the couple's three children. Rebecca Jollotta, of South Shore Hospital's perinatal behavioral health program, cited Clancy's insomnia without tiredness and her adverse reactions to antidepressants, but testified Clancy's symptoms did not fully meet the diagnostic criteria at the time. Clancy has since been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Jollotta also testified Clancy scored 23 on the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale in November 2022, and that Clancy never indicated a plan to harm herself or her children. Clancy has pleaded not guilty to three counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 8 months, and contests criminal responsibility. Judge William Sullivan also declined for now to let a former McLean Hospital social worker testify about conditions at the facility, telling the courtroom the trial "is not Tripadvisor."     Jury Selection Begins in Tupac Shakur's Murder Trial, the Clancy Defense Finally Gets Its Doctors, a Kidney Deadline Runs Out

    Jury selection began Monday in Las Vegas in the murder trial of Duane "Keffe D" Davis, 63, the only person ever charged in the 1996 killing of Tupac Shakur. Davis has pleaded not guilty to one count of murder with a deadly weapon with a gang enhancement; prosecutors do not allege he fired the shots, but that he orchestrated the drive-by in retaliation for an assault on his nephew hours earlier. The case rests heavily on Davis's own 2019 memoir and prior interviews. Judge Carli Kierny is presiding; jurors are expected to begin hearing evidence August 17. Also: in Plymouth, Massachusetts, Judge William Sullivan reversed a pretrial ruling and will allow Lindsay Clancy's defense to call two medical experts on the injuries she sustained going out a second-story window — evidence that answers the Commonwealth's suggestion that her suicide attempt was not genuine.     Lindsay Clancy's Psychiatrist Cross-Examined, 14 Telemedicine Visits and Never in the Same Room, Sarah Boone's 13th Lawyer Won't File

    Kevin Reddington cross-examined Dr. Jennifer Tufts on Monday, day ten of Lindsay Clancy's murder trial in Plymouth Superior Court. Tufts, the psychiatrist who treated Clancy from September 2022 through the day before the killings, testified that all fourteen of their appointments were by telemedicine and that she had never met Clancy in person until the trial. Reddington questioned her experience level, her online biography, her medication decisions, and what she knew of Clancy's care elsewhere. Tufts also confirmed she is a defendant in the medical malpractice suits Lindsay and Patrick Clancy have filed. Clancy has pleaded not guilty to three counts of first-degree murder in the January 2023 deaths of Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan; she does not dispute causing their deaths and argues she was not criminally responsible due to postpartum psychosis. Also: in Florida, Sarah Boone is serving life without parole for the second-degree murder of Jorge Torres Jr., who died inside a zipped suitcase in 2020.     Lindsay Clancy's Judge Just Got Reversed, Latarsha Sanders's Conviction Vacated, a 78-Year-Old Killed Waiting for a Bus

    On Thursday the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts vacated the first-degree murder convictions of Latarsha Sanders, who stabbed her two young sons — Edson "Marlon" Brito, 8, and La'son Brito, 5 — to death in Brockton in 2018. The court held that excluding thousands of pages of her psychiatric records, documenting a diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia, was prejudicial error on the sole question before the jury: criminal responsibility. The trial judge was William Sullivan — the same judge now presiding over Lindsay Clancy's murder trial in Plymouth, where the identical question is being litigated. The Plymouth County District Attorney's office says it is reviewing the opinion. In week three of the Clancy trial, prosecutors called the family's nanny, the children's pediatrician and preschool teachers, a family friend and Clancy's former father-in-law, all describing a devoted mother — the Commonwealth's argument being that a functioning woman was making decisions, not experiencing psychosis. Clancy has pleaded not guilty and does not dispute causing the deaths of Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 8 months. Judge Sullivan has taken under advisement whether the defense may call three medical experts. Also: in East St. Louis, Illinois, a 15-year-old has been charged with first-degree murder in the stabbing of 78-year-old John Wesley Allen Sr., who was waiting for a bus.     Prosecutors in Lindsay Clancy's murder trial called the family's former nanny, who told jurors Clancy was a devoted mother and described Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 8 months — testimony the Commonwealth is using to argue Clancy was organized, oriented and in command of her household. Clancy has pleaded not guilty to three counts of first-degree murder in the January 2023 deaths at their Duxbury, Massachusetts home and argues she was not criminally responsible due to postpartum psychosis. Jurors also heard DNA and toxicology evidence, and the state was expected to call the medical examiner's office. Also: in Pensacola, Florida, Timothy Kramer, 53, is on trial for first-degree premeditated murder and aggravated animal cruelty in the July 2024 shooting death of his estranged wife, Rosa Maria Kramer, 47, who had left him two weeks earlier and returned to collect her belongings. He has pleaded not guilty; his defense concedes he fired the shots and argues self-defense. And in Honolulu, Gerhardt Konig — convicted in April of attempted manslaughter in the cliffside attack on his wife, Arielle Konig — is seeking a new trial, arguing the jury misunderstood its instructions.     On the seventh day of testimony in Lindsay Clancy's murder trial, defense attorney Kevin Reddington told Judge William Sullivan on the record that the defense is not contesting the Commonwealth's case-in-chief, stipulating to chain of custody on the blood, DNA and physical evidence — a move that could shorten the trial and narrows it to the single question of criminal responsibility. Clancy has pleaded not guilty to three counts of first-degree murder in the January 2023 deaths of Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 8 months, in Duxbury, Massachusetts, and argues she was suffering postpartum psychosis. Prosecutors called crime lab, hospital and toxicology witnesses this week. Also: in Orlando, Judge Lisa T. Munyon sentenced Demorris Andy Hunter, 59, to death for the 2002 murder of his neighbor Theresa Ann Green, 38, following a unanimous jury recommendation; the sentence goes to the Florida Supreme Court on automatic review. And in Cincinnati, Omarion Horne, 23, was sentenced to 10 to 14½ years for the involuntary manslaughter of 23-year-old Rachel Counts, who was shot during what prosecutors described as a game of Russian roulette.
