    Preservation vs. Transformation

    In this episode of Faith in Pieces, we continue our Where the Church Gets It Wrong season with a conversation about preservation vs. transformation. Traditions can ground us, connect us to those who came before us, and help us pass on faith from one generation to the next. But what happens when the church becomes more committed to preserving what is familiar than following where God is forming something new? Joel and erik talk about the difference between tradition and traditionalism, why change in the church can feel so personal, and how we sometimes make things sacred that may simply be preferences, habits, or local customs. From coffee in the sanctuary to Sunday school, liturgy, music, and the ministries we keep alive, this conversation asks how the church can honor what has shaped us while still being open to faithful transformation.

    Unity Vs. Uniformity

    In this episode of Faith in Pieces, we begin our new series, Where the Church Gets It Wrong, by reflecting on Christie Johnson’s sermon about the difference between unity and uniformity. We explore how the church can make room for different gifts, perspectives, and callings without expecting everyone to think, serve, or belong in exactly the same way. True unity, we discuss, is not sameness. It is choosing to stay at the table, listen well, and build something more beautiful together. The conversation then turns to another place the church can flatten what God has made rich: the way we teach Scripture, especially to children. When Bible stories are reduced to tidy behavior lessons like “be brave like David” or “obey like Noah,” we can miss the larger story of who God is. Instead of forming disciples rooted in grace, mercy, and love, we risk forming rule-followers shaped by performance, guilt, and judgment. Faithful Bible teaching begins not simply with “What should I do?” but with “What does this story show us about God?”

    Faith In Pieces | Reconciling Ministries Network Conversation With Rev. Julia Riley

    In this episode of Faith in Pieces, we continue our series of conversations offering resources and perspective as Mosaic discerns alignment with the Reconciling Ministries Network. Pastor Shuler sits down with Rev. Julia Riley, Co-Pastor at Central United Methodist Church and Co-Chair of the conference RMN board. Pastor Shuler sits down with Michael Gienger, Co-Pastor of Central United Methodist Church, to reflect on Central’s journey of becoming a Reconciling congregation and the fruits that have come from that decision. Michael shares Central’s story of revitalization, their deep commitment to serving unhoused neighbors, and why clarity and courage matter when a church chooses to publicly live into its values of inclusion and justice.
