Special Guests - Johanna Knight, Alexandra Walsh and Brian Marcais

Adrien interviews Johanna, Brian, and Alexandra about their rowing journeys and their efforts to create a new para category for neurodivergent rowers. Johanna shares her coxing journey since 2006 and her recent diagnosis with autism and ADHD, which inspired her to work with Brian to develop a para category for neurodivergent athletes. Brian discusses his 30-year involvement in rowing, including coaching adaptive rowing programs and his current role as director of U15 programs at Oakland Strokes and development coach for US Rowing para team. Alexandra describes her transition from competitive figure skating to rowing and coxing, and her plans to write a memoir about being a Division I athlete with autism. The group discusses the current para rowing categories (PR1, PR2, PR3) which focus primarily on physical disabilities, and explores how to make rowing more inclusive for neurodivergent athletes through local regattas and international expansion. They also address the challenges coaches face working with neurodivergent athletes, including communication differences and the importance of creating supportive environments. The conversation concludes with plans for future collaboration on social media and the possibility of creating educational resources for coaches about working with neurodivergent athletes. Rehab to Row with Charlotte Berman

Charlotte Berman is today's guest.  She is a college rower who shares her extensive journey with a knee injury. Charlotte discusses how she first started rowing in high school and eventually committed to Rochester University, but faced significant challenges with persistent knee pain that began during her freshman year. After seeing multiple doctors, physical therapists, and undergoing various treatments including surgery in December to remove a bone spur and benign growth, Charlotte is now in recovery and working to return to lifeguarding while considering her future role in rowing. She describes her experience navigating college life with an injury, including the support she received from coaches, friends, and a therapist specializing in athlete mental health. Charlotte also shared her current involvement with the team as a student assistant coach, helping with novices and data analysis, while maintaining her connection to the sport she loves. Rehab to Row with Lauren Miller

BIO: We are excited to welcome Lauren Miller to the Rowing on the Square Podcast.  Lauren started her rowing career as a walk on at the University of Minnesota. Prior to finding rowing, she was an avid swimmer and triathlete and had spent plenty of time in the water rather than on the water in a rowing shell. After a few short months as a novice, she fell in love with the sport and completed her collegiate rowing career in May of 2018. Following graduation with a Neuroscience B.S., Lauren moved out to Saratoga Springs, NY to train with The Advanced Rowing Initiative of the Northeast (ARION). She trained with ARION for one year before coming back to the University of Minnesota as the graduate assistant coach for the women's rowing team, where she also completed her Master's in Business Administration. While she initially had no intention of continuing to train at the elite level after her first year at ARION, she found herself missing high-level training and decided to give it another shot at ARION. After her first few months of training out of graduate school, she was invited to compete with the Pan American team in 2023. She still currently lives in Saratoga and is excited to have recovered from her back injury that she has been rehabilitating since 2024.  Outside of rowing, she loves to bike, read, draw, spend time with friends, pet dogs, and bake sourdough.
