    The Center for Translation and Interpretation with Agustín Amaro and Erisan Villafana Torres

Each episode features an interview with a department Chair or a Professor and focuses on the specifics of an area of study, specifically the value of that pursuit both during the college experience and beyond.  This episode features a conversation with Agustín Amaro and Erisan Villafana Torres of the Center for Translation and Interpretation. From the Center’s website, "The Center for Translation and Interpretation evolved from the need to support the growing number of Hispanic/Latino/a/x/e students of Cal Poly Humboldt, which is a Hispanic Serving Institution. Today, the Center has become a hub of translation and interpretation services for the campus community. The Center is also committed to experiential learning, offering Spanish majors opportunities to provide critical interpretation and translation support for Latinx parents and families of K–12 students in Humboldt County. This not only reinforces language skills for Cal Poly Humboldt students, but also helps remove language barriers in the local community." It was really interesting to speak with both Agustín and Erisan about their work and their personal experiences with language and translation.     Cannabis Studies Program and Lab with Dan Mar and Josh Meisel

    Welcome to Majors & Minors at Cal Poly Humboldt! This show takes a close look at the rich academic offerings of our campus and all of the areas of study that can be pursued as a student. Each episode features an interview with a department Chair or a Professor and focuses on the specifics of an area of study, specifically the value of that pursuit both during the college experience and beyond.  This episode features the Cannabis Studies Bachelor of Arts Program as well as the Cannabis Studies Lab. I had the chance to speak with Lab lead Dan Mar and Dr. Josh Meisel , Department of Sociology Chair, who oversees the program.   With a focus on social and environmental responsibility, the bachelor’s degree program explores the historical, geographical, cultural, economic, and political contexts of cannabis legalization. Drawing curriculum across  multiple disciplines, the program prepares students to be stewards of social change in complex policy landscapes, developing skills in critical and analytic thinking, writing, communicating with diverse communities, as well as engaging with science and research. Shedding light on the implications of contemporary social problems on the limits, possibilities and promises of cannabis policy reform to address them is the key to building a sustainable and equitable future. And the lab approaches cannabis through a social science lens, and undertakes studies, publications, podcasts, and events including the annual Cannabis and Environmental Stewardship Symposium.  This program is deeply rooted in an understanding of the Universities' location along the north coast, the history of the land here and the evolution of marijuana growth and production practices. Have you ever thought about studying Journalism or Mass Com? There is a lot to be learned about these majors and the way in which Diedre spoke about the field of journalism generally and also the department that we have here is compelling and will be exciting to listeners. Student journalism has a long history at Cal Poly Humboldt and the alum also go on to contribute to the field in important ways. The students in the department are the media makers at Cal Poly Humboldt. They challenge conventions, and learn by doing – creating content to build a portfolio of their work for use in their careers. Hands-on learning is a key part of the curriculum here that focuses on contemporary media issues in race, gender, equity, law and ethics and challenges societal norms and narratives.     Department of Critical Race, Gender & Sexuality Studies with Ramona Bell

Each episode features an interview with a department Chair or a Professor and focuses on the specifics of an area of study, specifically the value of that pursuit both during the college experience and beyond.  This week Dr. Ramona Bell, Chair of the Department of Critical Race, Gender and Sexuality Studies is on the show. This is a really interesting and important area of study that often gets purposefully maligned and has been historically and presently weaponized to do harm to the field and to higher ed generally. But we, of course, know better than that and are here to acknowledge all the strengths of the discipline, the amazing faculty here and the happenings in the department.   Dr. Bell and I discussed what drew her into this topic initially, what role she thinks the field plays in society, and all the specifics of what is going on with the program at Cal Poly Humboldt. The Critical Race, Gender & Sexuality Studies (CRGS) department encourages students to explore how race, gender, sexuality, class, and other identities shape our lives and society. Rooted in activism and social justice, CRGS blends Ethnic Studies, Women’s Studies, and Queer Studies in a dynamic, interdisciplinary department. Students gain tools to challenge inequality, think critically, and lead with purpose. We discuss what drew her to the field, her extensive teaching background and winding professional path and get into the specifics of our department here at Cal Poly Humboldt and why it is such a rich place to pursue a degree in English. Throughout their time in the department, students analyze texts and language, challenge entrenched ideas, and think critically about how to amplify diverse voices. With a priority on hands-on learning, our students create, listen, write, teach, and plan their mark on the world. Students will work closely with faculty and a supportive cohort of peers to explore the deep connection between theory and practice, critique and creation. Graduates leave the University with a renewed passion for the study of English and a broad set of skills to carry into diverse and exciting careers.
