VO₂ Max: The Fitness Number That Could Change How You Age

What if one of the most important indicators of your long-term health is a number you've never measured? It's called VO₂ max, and it tells us a lot about our aerobic fitness, endurance, and capacity to stay active as we age. In this episode of the Redefine What's Possible podcast, Shanon Tysland sits down with exercise physiologist, endurance athlete, and author Brady Holmer to explore why VO₂ max matters—not just for elite athletes, but for anyone who wants to perform better today and stay healthy for decades to come. They unpack the science connecting aerobic fitness and longevity, what VO₂ max scores actually mean, how testing can guide training, and why high-intensity intervals may be one of the most effective ways to improve your aerobic engine. Whether you're chasing a personal best, training for your next adventure, or simply wanting to keep up with your kids and grandkids, this conversation offers practical insights for building lifelong fitness. Because fitness isn't just about what you can do today. It's about what you'll be able to do tomorrow. Some of the key themes we explore: VO₂ max explained: What it measures and how the heart, lungs, blood vessels, and muscles work together to produce energy.Elite performance vs. everyday fitness: Why having the highest VO₂ max doesn't necessarily mean winning the race.VO₂ max and longevity: The research connecting aerobic fitness with all-cause mortality and staying capable as we age.Understanding your number: What scores of 30, 40, and 50 mean and why age and sex matter.Training zones simplified: Easy, moderate, and hard—and why training doesn't need to be overly complicated.Testing and training smarter: What laboratory testing, wearables, and ventilatory thresholds (VT1 and VT2) can tell us.Improving VO₂ max: Zone 2, high-intensity intervals, and why longer intervals may be especially effective.Recovery and adaptation: The importance of sleep, nutrition, and mental recovery.Redefining what's possible: How Brady approaches aging, performance, family, and remaining competitive throughout life.Keep Up With Brady Newsletter: https://www.physiologicallyspeaking.comPodcast: Run Long Run HealthyBook: VO2 Max Essentials (available on Amazon)X: @Brady_H

Train the Right Thing: Finding What’s Really Limiting You with Andrew Hauser

What if improving your fitness isn’t about working harder—but figuring out what actually needs to improve? In this episode of the Redefine What’s Possible podcast, Shanon sits down with human-performance expert Andrew Hauser to explore the idea of the rate limiter—the system or factor that may be holding back performance, recovery, or adaptation. Andrew has spent his career working with professional athletes at the highest levels of sport, including leadership roles with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Atlanta Braves. Together, Shanon and Andrew explore how to use data, testing, and careful observation to better understand the person in front of you rather than jumping straight to a generic solution. They discuss VO₂ max, breathing, muscle oxygen, recovery, Zone 2 training, wearables, and why two people with similar numbers may need completely different approaches. The bigger takeaway: Don’t start with the solution. Start by understanding the limiter. The goal isn’t simply to collect more data or work harder. It’s to understand what your body needs, train with greater intention, and build the capacity to keep doing what matters for decades to come. The more clearly we understand what our bodies are telling us, the more intentionally we can train, recover, and build the capacity to keep doing what matters. The Hidden Climate Lever in Your Insurance Premiums with Nick Gardner

Have you ever thought about what happens to your insurance premium after you pay it? In this episode of Redefine What’s Possible podcast, Nick Gardner, co-founder and Head of Partnerships & Community at Premiums for the Planet, helps us see insurance differently — not as a boring bill we pay once a year, but as a hidden system where dollars become capital, investments, influence, and ultimately part of the future we are building. We talk about Premiums for the Planet, climate finance, B Corps, the hidden power of commercial insurance, and why the money we are already spending may be one of the most overlooked levers for climate action. But this conversation goes deeper than insurance. Nick is also involved with the US Chamber of Connection, and we explore why connection, belonging, and community may be essential infrastructure for meaningful change. This episode is for anyone who wants their life, work, money, and community to better reflect the future they say they care about. Cal Dietz — Strength & Conditioning Coach, Author, and Creator of Triphasic Training

This week, Shanon sits down for a conversation with Cal Dietz—one of the world’s leading strength and conditioning coaches and the longtime Head Strength and Conditioning Coach at the University of Minnesota.  Cal is best known as the creator of Triphasic Training, an influential training system focused on how athletes produce, absorb, and control force to improve performance and resilience. Throughout his career, Cal has helped prepare more than 50 Olympians representing 11 countries, worked with athletes who have earned more than 40 Olympic medals, and contributed to 11 NCAA National Championship teams. His experience also includes working with professional athletes across the NHL, NFL, NBA, MLB, MMA, and boxing.  Beyond the championships and medals, Cal has spent decades studying what allows people to continually adapt and improve. His work offers lessons that extend well beyond elite sport—from building strength and resilience to recovering from setbacks, aging well, and developing the capacity to keep doing what matters most. In this episode, Cal Dietz shares insights from decades of coaching elite athletes, emphasizing movement principles, mental tenacity, and habits that promote health span and longevity. Whether you're an athlete, coach, or anyone seeking to improve their quality of life, this conversation is a good reminder that you don't have to be training for the Olympics to train like someone who believes their best years are still to come.

From Pain to Purpose: The Journey of Resilience and Vulnerability with Reggie D. Ford

What if the very things that helped you survive and become resilient are the things that are keeping you from healing? That is the question Shanon explores with bestselling author, TEDx speaker, resilience expert and founder of Vulnerability Muscle Framework, Reggie D. Ford.  Reggie’s life story began with trauma, violence, and severe dysfunction shaped by poverty. Because his life started with such devastating circumstances, he normalized a life lived in constant survival mode. But, the strategies that helped him survive were not the same strategies that helped him heal. By harnessing the power of vulnerability, he was able to transform his pain into his purpose and pull himself out of the darkness and suffering to create a clear sense of meaning and direction in his own life.  One of the most important takeaways from this conversation? Leaning into and recognizing the power of vulnerability can help you break the curse of generational trauma and discover your own true potential. This is a deeply vulnerable and heartfelt conversation about survival, using success as a shield, finding meaning in adversity, and embarking on the lifelong journey of healing.  Reggie’s inspiring story shows us that we can redefine what’s possible in our lives when we stop performing for worth and start living from it.  You can keep up with Reggie on Instagram, LinkedIn, Youtube, and his website.
