A Promise Is No Joke “When you make a vow to God, do not delay in fulfilling it. For He has no pleasure in fools; fulfill your vow.” - Ecclesiastes 5:4. Have you ever stopped to think about the weight of your words? When you make a promise, you are putting your character on the line. It’s easy to say, “I will change,” “I’ll be there,” “I’ll seek God for real,” but keeping it is another story. God is not pleased with those who speak but don’t act. He calls that foolishness. And who wants to be seen by God as a fool? In politics, promising and not fulfilling seems normal. We see it all the time—it even becomes a joke. But with God, it’s not like that. For Him, promises are serious. He listens to every word that comes out of our mouths because words reveal what truly lives inside our hearts. And maybe that’s the real issue: are there too many people speaking too much… and living too little? Have you ever broken a promise you made to God? Maybe you said, “Lord, if You help me, I’ll seek Your presence.” Or, “I’ll never fall into this again.” Or, “I promise I’ll take my spiritual life seriously.” But time went by, and everything went back to normal. The heart even feels shame—but life moves on as if nothing happened. Yet God does not forget. He takes it seriously. Do you? Keeping promises is a matter of honor. Those who promise and fulfill show spiritual maturity, a fear of God, and respect for themselves. Young people who learn to keep their word become strong adults, trustworthy leaders, future parents who can be examples. But those who speak and don’t fulfill keep hiding behind excuses, fear, and shame—and that slowly eats away at the soul. Today God is asking: do your words mean anything? If I asked your friends, your family, or even you: “Can your promises be trusted?”, what would they say? If it hurts to hear that question, maybe that’s exactly why change is needed. What have you promised and not fulfilled? There is still time to go back, ask for forgiveness, and start again. God never rejects a heart that truly repents. He only rejects the fool who pretends everything is fine. Don’t leave for tomorrow the commitment you should fulfill today. If you promised something to God — keep it. If you walked away — return. If you want change — begin now. Speak less. Do more. And live in such a way that your words carry weight… so that God can look at you and say, “This one, I can trust.”
