How Dancers Use Data To Get Better And Beat Perfectionism | Ep 136

In this episode, I’m talk all about DATA and how tracking things has become one of the best ways for me to understand my mood, my progress, and sometimes even the illusions I have about where I think I am versus where I actually am. Sometimes we work really hard to get somewhere, but when we actually get there, we don’t recognize it. (ep 18) We’re still thinking we’re trying to get there. And then you look at the data and it’s like… no, actually, you’re already there. The data proves it. I go into my strategy for tracking things, my Excel sheets, the questions I ask myself, what I actually keep track of, and how having that information has helped me answer so many questions about myself. And then, of course, we bring it into dance. If you leave dance class and immediately decide you didn’t perform well, the data might give you a little more information about WHY. Maybe you’re getting your period. Maybe you didn’t eat the way you normally do. Maybe you just got back from traveling. Maybe you didn’t sleep enough. Maybe you already used a ton of energy that day before you even got to class. Instead of immediately deciding, “I sucked today,” now you have information that helps you understand what was actually going on. This episode is really about using data to answer some of the questions we have about ourselves instead of always relying on how we feel in that exact moment. How you feel about your progress and what the data actually says about your progress are two completely different things. Follow: Krissy: @krissyphillipino KDFSTUDIO: @kdfstudio

Become A Better Dancer In Less Than 5 Minutes | Ep 134

Through the many, many dance lessons I’ve taught over the years, I’ve figured out one of the easiest ways to make someone a better dancer in less than five minutes. Exaggerate the movement. When dancers are first starting out, they usually don’t realize how much space they actually need to take up. So when I tell someone to make something HUGE, what feels ridiculously big to them usually ends up being just appropriately big. In this episode, I talk about why exaggerating movement works so quickly and how it helps you understand something else that newer dancers don’t always know how to do yet, which is using all of the muscles you need at the same time. Exaggeration basically turns a giant flashlight on the movement. Now you can feel it. You can see it. You know what muscles are working. You start to understand where the movement is supposed to go. And once your body knows what BIG feels like, you have so much more to work with. Because even when you think you’re being big, chances are you’re probably not as big as you think you are. But we also talk about the opposite and when you actually need to dim the movement down. Sometimes making something smaller and lighter gives your body a chance to learn it without trying to do everything at once. Get the movement into your body first. Then you can turn the volume back up. This episode is about learning how to play with both. Making it bigger when you need more and making it smaller when you need to learn. And sometimes that one adjustment can change your dancing in less than five minutes. Follow: Krissy: @krissyphillipino KDFSTUDIO: @kdfstudio
