    What Makes a Homeschool Program Sustainable? | Classical Liberal Arts Academy In a follow-up to "How to Choose a Homeschool Curriculum," Mr. William C. Michael, O.P., headmaster of the Classical Liberal Arts Academy, expands on the question parents most need to ask about any homeschool program: can it actually be carried out by a real family in real circumstances? Drawing on his years as a private school teacher and administrator, Mr. Michael explains why so many homeschool programs fail that test. Most sell the modern grade-level school model in a box and leave all the teaching, planning, grading and record keeping to the parent, usually the mother. He shows how "parents are the primary educators of their children" was taken out of its original context, and why the popular story that "everybody used to be homeschooled" doesn't hold up. He then describes the older schoolhouse and tutor model, with students working independently through well-designed texts at their own pace.
