Exceptional or Just Expensive? What Gemstone Buyers Are Really Paying For

Two sapphires may appear remarkably similar, yet one costs hundreds and the other thousands. What are you really paying for? In this episode of Secrets Behind the Sparkle, we examine the difference between a gemstone that is genuinely exceptional and one that is simply expensive. Discover how colour, clarity, cut, size, treatment and origin work together to influence value, and why seductive descriptions such as “royal blue”, “cornflower blue” and “rare” should never replace proper evaluation. You’ll also learn: why an expensive gemstone may still offer fair value; how inclusions and cutting affect beauty; what a laboratory report can, and cannot, tell you; the warning signs that a gemstone may be overpriced; the most important question to ask before buying. The Gemstone You Shouldn’t Buy: Three Hidden Risks Behind a High-Value Purchase

Some gemstones look full of promise. They may come with an impressive story, attractive paperwork or the expectation that cutting will reveal something exceptional. But appearance and potential do not always translate into quality or value. In this episode, we explore three hidden risks behind a significant gemstone purchase—and why knowing when not to buy can be just as important as knowing what to choose. I also share the story of a piece of Tanzanian sapphire rough that appeared worth cutting, until an experienced cutter identified the silk, darkness and likely result beneath the surface. His advice was simple: do not cut it. Created for gemstone enthusiasts, collectors and private buyers, this episode offers a more realistic look at what can influence a gemstone’s beauty, suitability and true worth before money changes hands. Why Most Buyers Never See The Best Gemstones

Finding a gemstone isn’t just about choosing one, it’s about accessing the right options in a market most buyers never fully see. In this episode, I explain why so many people struggle to find the right stone, even after doing their research, and what actually makes a gemstone exceptional beyond the usual checklists. From limited access and inconsistent quality to the hidden role of relationships, I break down what really determines whether you end up with the right gemstone...or the wrong one. This is not about quick tips or shortcuts. It’s about understanding the process properly, so you can make a confident, informed decision.

Inside Sri Lanka’s Moonstone Mines: What Buyers Rarely See

Most gemstone mine visits in Sri Lanka look authentic, hands-on, and surprisingly accessible. But what you see as a visitor is only part of the story. In this episode, I take you inside Meetiyagoda’s famous moonstone mines, not just as a tourist experience, but as a window into how the gemstone trade really works behind the scenes. From what you’re shown on the surface to what remains out of view, I explain why being physically close to a mine doesn’t necessarily mean access to better stones, better value, or better decisions. Along the way, I explore the assumptions many travellers make when buying gemstones abroad, and why those assumptions often lead to overconfidence. This isn’t about dismissing the experience... it’s about understanding it in context. If you’re planning to visit Sri Lanka, considering buying a gemstone while travelling, or simply curious about how the trade really works, this episode will give you a perspective most visitors never see.
