To Spank or Not to Spank? Discipline, Abuse, and Emotional Maturity

Drawing from his experience working with at risk youth and teaching parenting classes, he shares why emotional maturity, self control, and open conversations are essential parts of parenting. In this episode, Richard discusses: • Why conversations about spanking are often avoided in parenting education • The difference between punishment and discipline • How parental anger and emotional reactions can affect discipline • Why physical abuse should never be excused as discipline • The importance of emotional maturity and self control in parenting • Why parents need to create space for honest conversations about difficult parenting topics • How Parents on a Mission approaches discussions about discipline This episode is an invitation to think carefully about how we guide our children, how we respond when they misbehave, and how we can continue growing as parents. Consumer vs. Contributor Mindset: How Parents Shape Stronger Communities

What kind of citizens are we raising? In this episode of The Parent Whisperer Podcast, Richard Ramos explores the difference between a consumer mindset and a contributor mindset, and why that difference matters when building safe and healthy communities. A consumer mindset asks, “What can the community do for me?” A contributor mindset asks, “What can I do to make my community better?” Richard explains that parenting goes beyond raising children. We are also raising future citizens who will shape their families, neighborhoods, and communities. The attitudes and behaviors children learn at home influence how they treat others and whether they see themselves as part of the solution. Building stronger communities does not always require a major program or a large movement. It can begin with one family, one parent, one mentor, or one person choosing to make a difference. In this episode, Richard challenges parents to model personal responsibility, service, leadership, and stewardship so children learn to contribute rather than simply expect others to provide. In This Episode • The difference between consumer citizenship and contributing citizenship • Why raising children also means raising responsible citizens • How entitlement can affect the way children view the world • Why parents must model responsibility and service • How everyday choices and acts of kindness strengthen communities • Why schools, churches, and community organizations cannot replace parental leadership • How one person can influence many lives • Why healthy communities require people who take ownership • The importance of building a legacy for future generations • How focusing on the roots of problems can help create safer communities The key takeaway: Instead of asking only what is wrong with our community, we must also ask what we can do to make it better. The Roots of Human Flourishing: Why Safer Communities Start at Home

What does it really take to create safer, healthier communities? In this solo episode of The Parent Whisperer Podcast, Richard Ramos explores the idea of human flourishing and why the answer to youth violence, rebellion, and unhealthy communities may begin much closer to home than we think. Richard uses the example of a farmer to explain the difference between focusing on the fruit and focusing on the roots. Farmers do not simply look at the fruit and try to fix it. They focus on the soil, the roots, the environment, and the conditions that allow healthy crops to grow. Richard believes the same principle applies to people. If we want healthier communities, we need healthy citizens. And if we want healthy citizens, we need to pay attention to what is happening in the home and in the hearts of parents and children. He also explains why community leadership is not limited to people with titles, authority, or elected positions. Sometimes the most powerful form of leadership can look like something as simple as showing kindness, compassion, and unconditional love to someone who desperately needs it. In this episode, Richard explores: • What human flourishing means • Why people can sometimes be out of position or living out the wrong script • Why parents are raising future citizens, not just their own children • The difference between focusing on the fruit and focusing on the roots • Why community leaders need to look beyond the symptoms of youth violence • Why parents matter so much in creating healthier communities • How ordinary people can become community leaders without a title or position • Why parents need to recognize that they matter • Why our children need to see mom and dad as role models • How creating a healthier environment in the home can influence the future of the community Richard also shares the story of Aaron Stark, a young man who was once on the verge of committing a violent act but whose life was changed through an unexpected act of kindness and unconditional acceptance. The message is simple: You matter. Your parenting matters. Your influence matters. And creating healthier communities starts with what we cultivate at home. Listen to the full episode and share it with a parent or community leader who needs this message. Parents on a Mission is not for bad parents. It is for good parents who want to get better.

The Farmer’s Role: What to Do When Your Child Won’t Change | Richard and Shannon Morales

What do you do when you have tried everything and your child still seems to be going in the wrong direction? Richard and Shannon Morales know what that feels like. In this episode of The Parent Whisperer Podcast, they share their experience raising a strong willed child and the long process of learning to stay consistent, patient, and connected even when change did not happen on their timeline. Richard Ramos introduces his teaching concept called The Farmer’s Role. A farmer plants the seeds, cultivates the soil, waters the crops, and waits for the harvest. Parenting can work the same way. You cannot control exactly when your child will change. But you can control what you plant, how you respond, and whether you continue showing up. Richard and Shannon talk about the importance of: • Staying consistent when progress feels slow • Working on yourself instead of trying to control your child • Apologizing when you get it wrong • Modeling the behavior you want your children to learn • Keeping family values consistent across generations • Staying hopeful when you cannot see the results yet • Recognizing that children may find different paths to success Their story ultimately reaches beyond their own children. They are now seeing the values they worked to model reflected in the next generation. Sometimes the harvest takes longer than we want. But that does not mean the seeds are not growing.

Turning Your Past Into Purpose: Arthur and Gabby Soriano on Family, Forgiveness, and Youth Empowerment

What happens when you stop allowing your past to define you and start using it to help others? In this episode of The Parent Whisperer Podcast, Richard Ramos sits down with Arthur and Gabby Soriano, co founders of Youth Empowerment in San Diego, to talk about their personal journey, their work with families and youth, and the power of personal growth, forgiveness, and second chances. Arthur and Gabby openly share how their own difficult experiences shaped the work they do today. Arthur speaks about his years of incarceration and his journey back into the community, while Gabby shares how their experiences became the foundation for rebuilding their family and serving others. Their story is a powerful reminder that your past does not have to determine your future. In This Episode • How Arthur and Gabby turned their lived experiences into a mission to help others • The importance of rebuilding trust with family and community • Why personal development is at the heart of effective parenting • How forgiveness can help release guilt, shame, and resentment • Breaking generational cycles and creating a healthier foundation for children • The unique challenges of fatherhood and step parenting • Why parents need to work on themselves instead of focusing only on changing their children • The importance of helping men become more engaged fathers and role models • How trauma affects families across cultures and communities • The role of Youth Empowerment in working with youth impacted by the justice system • How restorative practices can help reduce violence and rebuild relationships • The impact of Parents on a Mission in helping families grow stronger • A powerful story about an 80 year old woman discovering the need to forgive after carrying resentment for decades • How Youth Empowerment helped transform the culture at Hoover High School From Past to Purpose Arthur and Gabby did not begin their journey from a perfect place. They had to rebuild trust with their families and their community and prove through their actions that they were committed to doing things differently. Today, they use those experiences to connect with families and young people who are facing many of the same challenges they once faced. Arthur describes this approach as using lived experience to guide the future and helping people through a credible messenger model. Parenting Begins With Personal Growth One of the strongest themes in this conversation is that parenting is not simply about changing children's behavior. It begins with changing ourselves. Gabby explains how Parents on a Mission helped her recognize patterns that had been passed down through families and generations. The personal development component became one of the most meaningful parts of the program for her. Richard reinforces this idea by explaining that Parents on a Mission focuses on parents dealing with their own issues rather than simply trying to fix their children. The Power of Forgiveness Forgiveness becomes another major theme throughout the conversation. Arthur and Gabby discuss how guilt, shame, resentment, and unresolved trauma can prevent people from moving forward. They share how forgiveness can become a turning point for parents and families. Gabby tells the story of an older woman who realized during a Parents on a Mission class that she had carried resentment toward another woman for decades after a traumatic childhood experience. For the first time, she was able to acknowledge that pain and begin releasing it. Breaking Generational Cycles Arthur and Gabby are also focused on creating a different future for their own children. They talk openly about the importance of consistency, rebuilding relationships, and creating a strong foundation so that their children can grow beyond the experiences of previous generations. Their goal extends beyond their own family. Youth Empowerment works with young people, families, and individuals impacted by the justice system, using lived experience, mentorship, restorative practices, and community connection. Creating Change at Hoover High School Arthur shares a powerful example of the impact this work can have. Hoover High School was once a place where gang conflicts were creating serious problems both inside and outside the school. Through youth programs, restorative practices, Parents on a Mission, and work with families, the school saw a dramatic transformation. Arthur says gang fights decreased significantly and eventually reached zero during the most recent school year, while attendance and behavior improved. Most importantly, students began taking ownership of the culture themselves. A Message for Parents This conversation is ultimately about hope. Your past does not have to define you. Your mistakes do not have to become your children's future. And meaningful change begins when we are willing to look honestly at ourselves, take responsibility, forgive, grow, and lead differently.
