Giving Voice to Underrepresented Composers with James Martin

In this episode of The Dickinson College Expert Show, our host chats with Associate Professor of Music James Martin about his career, his influences and his commitment to uplifting underrepresented voices through song. Martin is a critically acclaimed and award-winning baritone, actor and entertainer whose vocal repertoire spans from classical to musical theatre and beyond. The New York Times described his newest album, Wide as Heaven: A Century of Song by Black American Composers (New World Records), as "varied, moving, and entertaining," with "powerful performances." This highly personal project arises from Martin's longtime quest to bring the work of often-overlooked composers into the spotlight. As he explains, Martin began to "collect" music reflecting his African American culture and heritage during his first year of college. While some teachers and mentors advised him against performing nonclassical music, Martin continued to pursue a much more varied and personally meaningful path. "I've been a bit of a rebel that way," Martin says, "and it's gotten me the chance to do Ain't Misbehavin' and Figaro and Don Giovanni—and to sing in front of the Crown Princes of Europe as well as the people in the cabarets in New York and in New Orleans."

Volcanologist Ben Edwards Discusses Iceland Eruptions and Research

Ben Edwards is a professor of geosciences and holds the prestigious Moraine Chair in Arctic Studies at Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. His research focuses on the interactions between volcanoes and glaciers (glaciovolcanism), Arctic and Alpine climate change, UAV science, and the impacts of volcanic ash on plants. Volcano studies include the formation of pillow lava and cooling joints, large-scale lava-ice experiments, petrological imaging of lithospheric stratigraphy, applications of theoretical models for understanding the formation of cooling fractures in lavas, and the formation of deposits during volcano-ice interactions. His other interests include soil-forming processes, mineralogy, environmental hazards, the history of science, the history of Arctic exploration, and the influence of plate tectonics on almost everything. In this episode of The Dickinson College Expert Show, Professor Edwards explains his work in Iceland and how its glaciers and volcanoes are playing a pivotal role in his research and in tourism to the island nation.

The Trials of Donald Trump with Former Federal Judge John E. Jones III

Former President Donald Trump is facing multiple legal proceedings in New York, Georgia and in federal courthouses in Washington, D.C., and Florida. Dickinson President John E. Jones III '77, P'11, a former federal judge himself, discusses these cases in the latest episode of "The Dickinson College Expert Show." Former journalist and Dickinson Director of Media Relations Craig Layne sits down with Jones to discuss the multiple legal cases against the former president. Jones offers his insight from his time as a judge and a trial lawyer, including which case he thinks is the soundest for the prosecution and the case that will likely make it to trial first, perhaps even before the 2024 presidential election. Jones also discusses the efforts to keep Trump off the ballot by using the 14th Amendment of the Constitution. He explains why he has faith in the judicial system and its judges, including Trump appointee Aileen Cannon, who is overseeing the Mar-a-Lago documents case. And he weighs in on how TV cameras in the courtroom could affect the Georgia election interference case and the presidential race. Jones is a frequent commentator on legal issues in the media. His expertise has been highlighted recently by Bloomberg, ProPublica and the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Fantasy Football and Data Analytics with Emily Marshall
