The Glass of River Water That Started a Movement | Ministry Minute Episode 61

A woman dips two cracked glasses straight into the Amazon River. Brown water. And she hands one to the guest standing in her home. That guest was Christopher Beth. 56 years old. Zero ministry experience. A business consultant from Texas who only got on the plane to chaperone his teenage daughter’s mission trip — and who was so scared of being asked to speak that he spent the first two days hiding behind the trip’s pastor. On day three, the pastor left him alone in a partially flooded home. That’s when the homeowner offered him a drink. Caught between offending his host and getting violently ill, he heard a quiet prompting from God: “Help them.” Christopher didn’t go home and build a grand global strategy. He found a fifty-dollar water filter and had his family test it in a lake near their house in Texas. That was the plan. When he went back to Brazil to give filters away, one man took his filter and asked, “Why did you come to our village?” Christopher told him his story. The man said, “How can I have this Jesus?” That one yes became The Bucket Ministry. During the pandemic they went door to door in Kibera, Kenya — 81,777 homes, clean water for over 400,000 people, the Gospel shared half a million times, and 21,000 people professing faith in Christ. All of it started with a terrified guy in a flooded house who just decided to help. The Trial Lawyer Who Built Oxford in Texas | Ministry Minute Episode 60

Most pastors would be surprised to know that one of the most feared trial lawyers in America also built one of the largest and most beautiful theological libraries in the world. His name is Mark Lanier. He has won almost twenty billion dollars in courtroom verdicts, going toe to toe with Johnson & Johnson, with Merck, with Google. But on Sunday morning, you will find him teaching a Bible study class to around a thousand people — every single week. A few years back, Lanier visited Oxford University and walked through those old libraries: the vaulted ceilings, the quiet rooms where scholars have studied for centuries. Something stirred in him. He did not just admire it. He went home and built it. On his own property in north Houston sits a theological library inspired by the great libraries of Oxford. Stone buildings. A chapel. Gardens. It feels like a little European village, just sitting off a road in Texas. Inside there are over 120,000 volumes on Scripture, church history, and theology — plus a fragment of the Dead Sea Scrolls and one of the biggest C.S. Lewis collections in the country, including first editions and letters in his own handwriting. Scholars like N.T. Wright come and lecture in the chapel. This guy could spend his money on anything. And what he pours himself into is studying Scripture and teaching the Bible to his church. He is a kingdom builder — and one of the things he built is a gift to pastors. The Lanier Theological Library is open to visitors by reservation. A place built for you to study, to think, to breathe. The Pastor Who Made Himself Unnecessary | Ministry Minute Episode 57

For years, Steve Mickel served as the lead pastor of Westside Church, leading with effectiveness and vision. By every traditional metric, he was the engine of the organization — the indispensable leader the church could not live without. But at the height of his influence, Steve began to ask a countercultural, John the Baptist question: “What would it look like if I decreased so others could increase?” Biblical leadership is not about becoming the hero your church cannot function without; it is about becoming the equipper your church can thrive without. Steve did not wait for burnout or a crisis. He proactively began a multi-year journey of intentional self-diminishment, shifting the weight of ministry onto a team of leaders he had been quietly forming and mentoring. The result was not decline, but a surge in the church’s vitality. Pastor, your leadership role has a shelf life — and that is a gift, not a threat. Release the cape. Invest in quiet, relational mentorship. Plan for your absence. When you step back to let others increase, you are not losing your influence. You are multiplying it. Paralyzed at 18, He Said "I'm Excited to See Where God Takes Me" | Ministry Minute Episode 55

Zachary Abblitt was eighteen years old, and his life was wide open. He was a runner, a surfer, a swimmer, a musician. Then one dive into shallow water changed everything. He hit his head. In an instant, he was paralyzed. His C5 and C6 vertebrae were fractured. He had no feeling below his neck. By every human measure, this was the kind of moment that should have crushed his hope. But one week later, from a hospital bed, Zachary said something no one expected: “I’m really excited to see where the Lord is going to take me.” Zachary later said his paralysis did not feel like a trial — because to him, a trial was a circumstance with no hope. And with Jesus, he still had hope. He said he would rather walk through the fire with God than walk through the world without Him. Pastor, that is the difference between optimism and hope. Optimism depends on circumstances changing. Hope depends on the presence of God. Your people do not need a faith that only works when life makes sense. They need a firm foundation for the moment everything falls apart.
