Part of the Plan: Elias Pettersson on His Role in Vancouver’s Future

John Shannon and Kevin Woodley are back on 100% Canucks with the preseason underway and plenty for Vancouver to evaluate as the organization continues its rebuild. The guys begin with the latest developments in the Canucks’ crease, including the addition of another young goaltender and what it means for the organization’s depth at the position. Kevin breaks down the challenges of developing young goalies, the value of having experienced support at the AHL level, and how Vancouver can create the right environment for its prospects. John and Kevin also look back at the preseason matchup with Edmonton and the early stages of implementing Manny Malhotra’s system. With a young roster and a new coaching staff, they discuss what needs to improve and what Vancouver should actually be looking for during the exhibition schedule. Then, Canucks defenceman Elias Pettersson joins the show to discuss his offseason, the work he has put into his development, and his continued adjustment to the NHL. Pettersson talks about growing as a defenceman, the atmosphere surrounding the team, and the positive culture Vancouver is trying to establish. The conversation also turns to the difficult roster decisions facing the Canucks as young players battle for opportunities and the organization determines where each prospect is best served developing. For Vancouver, this season is about more than the standings. It’s about finding out which young players can become part of what the Canucks are building.

What Are the Canucks Building?: Dave Tomlinson on Vancouver’s New Direction & the Rebuild Ahead.

John Shannon and Kevin Woodley begin a new monthly tradition on 100% Canucks as Sportsnet Canucks analyst Dave Tomlinson joins the show to take stock of where Vancouver stands and what to expect as the organization begins its rebuild. With the preseason underway, the guys try to establish a baseline for this version of the Canucks. What is this team right now? What should progress look like? And with wins and losses no longer the only measure of success, what can Vancouver learn about its roster over the coming weeks? Tomlinson shares his excitement about watching the rebuild take shape and the opportunity it creates throughout the lineup. For established players like Brock Boeser, Elias Pettersson and Jake DeBrusk, the challenge is rediscovering the level they have shown in the past while helping establish the standards for a much younger team. At the same time, prospects including Braeden Cootes, Tom Willander, Liam Öhgren, Zeev Buium and Jonathan Lekkerimäki enter camp with something to prove and an opportunity to show where they fit into Vancouver’s future. John, Kevin and Dave discuss the balance between those two groups, what Manny Malhotra and the new leadership group are trying to establish, and why this preseason provides Vancouver with an important opportunity to evaluate what it has before deciding what comes next. It’s the first monthly check-in with Tomlinson as 100% Canucks follows the rebuild from the ground up.

The Next Chapter in Vancouver: Alex Edler on Retirement and Returning to the Canucks

John Shannon is joined by longtime Vancouver Canuck Alex Edler on 100% Canucks to discuss his return to the organization and the beginning of a new chapter in player development. After a 17-year NHL career, Edler reflects on adjusting to retirement and why he doesn't necessarily miss the daily grind of playing, even if the camaraderie, competition, and feeling of being part of the biggest games are harder to replace. Now back in Vancouver as Director of Player Development, Edler explains why joining the Canucks' new management group was an easy decision and what he hopes to bring to the organization's young players. He looks back on his own experience arriving in Canada as a young Swedish prospect and the importance of having veterans like Mattias Öhlund and Daniel and Henrik Sedin there to help him adjust. Edler also discusses how much the NHL has changed since he entered the league, the increased speed of today's game, and what young players need to do to continue adapting. He reflects on finishing his playing career in Los Angeles and why the change proved valuable for both him and his family. Now, Edler hopes to pass along the lessons he learned over nearly two decades in the NHL by building relationships with Canucks prospects and giving them the support they need on their own path to Vancouver.Plus, John closes the show with some news about the future of 100% Canucks and a new co-host joining the podcast.
