    Equity in access: tackling barriers to treatment and care

    About this event This webinar explored the inequities that shape patients' access to treatment and care, and why many people still face barriers to receiving timely, effective support. The discussion examined the structural challenges within the health system that affect uptake and adoption of treatments, including why innovations can take so long to reach patients in practice. Panellists also considered the significant regional variation in access to care, and the impact this has on outcomes and patient experience. Importantly, the session focused not only on identifying the problems, but on exploring practical solutions to create a fairer, more equitable system for all patients. This session was supported by Novartis.     Why prioritising patient trust increases the value of using technology and data to improve research and care

    About this event This webinar explored how organisations can partner with patients in the use of health data, placing trust and transparency at the heart of decision-making. It examined how technology currently uses patient data to support improvements in research and care, why involving patient panels is essential, and how this supports better outcomes and public confidence.  The session highlighted the benefits of using patient data, alongside practical ways organisations can use it more responsibly and effectively, linking to wider ambitions such as the UK's Life Sciences Sector Plan. It also considered the growing role of AI, and what's needed to ensure it supports, rather than undermines, trust.  This session was supported by Flatiron.     Power to the people? The 10 Year Health Plan, one year on

    What matters to you versus what's the matter with you? Do patients' goals really shape their care

    Our panel explored whether patients' goals, values, and preferences genuinely shaped the care they received. A patient, as well as colleagues from a Welsh Government sponsored public body, a charity, and a think tank, shared real-world insights from patients, highlighting where care did and did not reflect what mattered most to people, particularly for those from underrepresented groups. Discussing the realities of shared decision-making, the panel reflected on what good looks like, where gaps remain, and what practical changes are needed to ensure care is truly shaped by patients.     Understanding the causes of health inequalities and the role of trust in improving outcomes with Prof Habib Naqvi

    In this fireside chat, Habib and Rachel explored the root causes of health inequalities and why building trust with communities is essential to improving outcomes. Reflecting on lessons from the pandemic, they considered what has changed - and what still needs to. The conversation also looked ahead to the growing role of AI in healthcare, alongside the important work of addressing bias in clinical trials, drawing on the Race and Health Observatory's work to create more inclusive and representative research. This session was supported by Astra Zeneca.     Missingness: exploring why patients miss multiple appointments and how the system can support

    There are many reasons why missed appointments happen, and some of the causes can be complex. 'Missingness' can have poor outcomes for patients and research shows that those who experience the greatest health inequalities are at highest risk. This webinar looked at missed appointments, or 'missingness'. Our panel explored the reasons why patients might miss their health appointments, from practical barriers to emotional and systemic factors that can make healthcare feel out of reach. We also discussed what can be done to ensure patients feel more confident in attending those appointments, and how services can make it easier for people to communicate when they can't. This webinar highlighted perspectives that patients, and healthcare professionals, may not have considered, helping us all to think creatively about how to make visiting healthcare services as accessible as possible.     Patient power: energising the 10-Year Health Plan through patient partnership

    If the 10-Year Health Plan is to deliver real change, patient partnership must be more than a buzzword, it must be the foundation. Patients continue to face disempowerment in a system that often speaks the language of partnership while maintaining deeply unequal power dynamics. This session from Patient Partnership Week 2025 explored what meaningful patient agency looks like in practice, drawing on real-life insights from our helpline and focus groups. Patients consistently tell us they are left out of decisions, uninformed about their care, and too often treated as passive recipients rather than equal partners. Chaired by Julie Thallon, former nurse and Chair of the Patients Association, you'll hear from: Ellie Howe, patient advocate and founder of A Note of Hope, Ellen Tutton, patient advocate, Professor Alf Collins, former NHS England National Clinical Director for Personalised Care and trustee, the Patients Association.
