In this episode, the MMFC is in conversation with Dr. Celeste Orr. Dr. Orr is an associate professor in the Department of Sociology, the Coordinator of the Gender and Women’s Studies program, and the Wendy J. Robbins Professor in Gender and Women’s Studies at the University of New Brunswick. Dr. Orr also sits on the Muriel McQueen Fergusson Centre’s Board of Directors. Dr. Orr and Dr. Stefanie Hunt-Kennedy (Director of the MMFC) discuss Dr. Orr’s award-winning book Cripping Intersex and how intersex and interphobia intersect with disability and ableism. Together they explore the cultural process through which bodies are understood, defined and classified, and share the importance of finding joy while engaging with difficult work. The Muriel McQueen Fergusson Centre for Family Violence Research acknowledges that it carries out its work on the unceded territory of the Wolastoqiyik, Mi’kmaq and Peskotomuhkati peoples. This territory is covered by the “Treaties of Peace and Friendship” which these nations first signed with the British Crown in 1726. The treaties did not deal with the surrender of lands and resources, but in fact recognized Mi’kmaq and Wolastoqiyik title and established the rules for what was to be an ongoing relationship between nations. We pay respect to the elders, past and present, and descendants of this land. We honour the knowledge keepers and seek their guidance as we strive to develop closer relationships with the Indigenous people in New Brunswick.
