In Between

Veronika ZV

Where foreigners meet foreigners in a foreign country and share lifestyles, curiosities, ideas, beliefs, stigmas, taboos, cultural traits and anything worth the chat! The world is our home and it is up to us to explore it as we wish to, even though it meaning we will be away from family and friends for some time, and more often, extended periods of time. Loneliness can creep in like a close friend, and we find ourselves lost in the middle of the unfamiliar. This is a safe space to build community and bring people from different places together with a common goal, connection and belonging.

Maria Margo – “A good morning girl.”

Meet Maria, with an energetic and loving spirit; her chat with me brightened up my day! It was her love for dancing that brought her to China for the first time, but it was her ability to persevere through challenges and trust in herself that kept her here! From dance teacher to English teacher, in the words of Maria “life happens!” Even though she struggled deeply with Mandarin from the start, she did not give up on building a life here. Now after having lived in a few different cities in China, she fell in love with Shenzhen. We chat her current position as a kindergarten teacher, highs and lows of relationships, giving birth in China during pandemic times, and her positive experiences and opinions about the health system in the country for foreigners. Maria also shares about her social media account on “小红书”, the main Chinese social media, and why her simple and yet much needed message was able to attract over 12k followers already! We go ahead on discussing the impacts of social media in different countries and societal expectations, especially on women. This was a very insightful and deep conversation on many important matters, related not only to the life of an expat, but also as a member of society. Acylina Barros – “É preciso saber viver.”

Meet Acylina, a lovely Brazilian woman with whom I had the pleasure of sitting down and get to know in a deep level. She came to China by destiny and our meeting was a blow of fresh air, insightful, inspirational and blissful. She came with the mindset of growing and learning from this ancient county. With a focus in integrative medicine, Acylina became a driver for positivity and wellness, assisting people all over the world to heal by integrating their body, mind and spirit. We also get into her impressions of China as a tourist, as someone who has been here a very short time and her views on this highly advanced country. From personal interactions, technological effects on society and food adventures, we chat about her personal views and experiences on this side of the world. This was an unique and deep conversation with someone that views moments as gifts and opportunities for self improvement and joy, someone who understands that life is our school and the more places we go and the more people we meet, the more prepared we will be when graduation comes. It is not only Acylina’s name that is unique, she is truly one of a kind human being who has a very clear and intentional path on earth and it was pleasure to have had the chance of listening and learning from her. Stevan Antonijevic – “Hou sai lei!” 好犀利

Meet Stevan, the second Serbian I know other than Novak Djokovic (tennis player), although I never met Djockovic in person haha! He is one of the many friends I’ve made through volleyball. Because of life circumstances, Stevan ended up in China, a place he at first had no interest in coming to, but that now proves to be the place for him to live and stay. From tattoo artist, graffiti artist to gaming designer, started his China journey about 5 years ago in the city of Foshan, where is apparently a very popular destination for Serbians! Before coming to Shenzhen he lived in Guangzhou for 4 years. We get into the differences of working for a Chinese company and how the working system differs from Europe, if you don’t like micromanaging, it might not be the right environment for you! We chat the importance of community building, cultural impacts and his views on the learning the language. We also discuss work culture in the country and the incredible growth this country has and is still experiencing, which puts other countries into perspective. This was a very fun conversation about going with the flow of life and seeing where it leads with no expectations or fears. And if you want to know what “Hou sai lei”means, go ahead and listen to the episode! Robert Grey– “Language is one of the most valuable skills you can acquire in life”

Meet Robert, an energetic and charismatic polyglot who chose a kind of lifestyle unfathomable to many of us! His passion for languages started at the age of 18 because of the influence of a friend, and from that moment on, his life took a turn. Unlike many people I have interviewed, China came up to him in a very unusual way! If you really want to learn a new language but believe it is too hard to do it, this episode is for you. Here you will hear a new perspective on having different languages under your belt and a few methods and advices to make it possible! Robert brings a very refreshing mindset about travelling abroad and how we can maximize our experiences by learning new languages. We dive into how speaking a local language makes you sympathize better with that culture and how being fearless and curious can take you a long way in experiencing the world. We get into his perspective on the pros, cons and trade offs of living in China for about six months already. From long term visions, goals and the realization of what really matters in life, we discuss the depths of truly immersing yourself into this vast and mesmerizing world, and how living in it is the best investment you can do for yourself. Robert reminds us that there is not only one way of living life, and that our choices are ours to make.  The world is ours to explore and conquer. Dedication, hard work, and a lot of effort will take you a long way.   If you want to know which language Robert thinks was the easiest for him to learn, go ahead and listen to the episode!
