“No Means No” — Understanding Consent & Sexual Assault

Send us Fan Mail Dear Listeners, October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. This observance focuses on raising awareness, enhancing efforts to "uplift needs, voice and experiences of survivors" of domestic violence (Domestic Violence Awareness Project, 2026). This year the theme "With Survivor Always" aims to highlight moving from just "Awareness" to "Action". Domestic Violence Awareness Project defines domestic violence as " as a pattern of abusive behaviors–including physical, sexual, and psychological attacks as well as economic coercion–used by one intimate partner against another (adult or adolescent) to gain, maintain, or regain power and control in the relationship". Today's podcast focuses on sexual violence/assault and the No Means No Worldwide Campaign to end sexual violence against women and children globally. The No Means No Worldwide nonprofit aims to prevent sexual violence by equipping "young people with the mental, verbal and physical skills to recognize danger respond assertively and report safely" (No Means No Worldwide, 2026). Bermuda, as we reflect on the purpose of Domestic Violence Awareness, let's consider what actions we can take to prevent it.  This episode of Bermuda Health-Abets, a podcast where we discuss everything from A to Z on healthy living, is dubbed “No Means No” — Understanding Consent & Sexual Assault. #EmpoweringInformingandMotivating Bermuda residents to live well. Staying Independent: Planning for the Future

Send us Fan Mail Dear Listeners, October 1st is International Day of Older Persons. This observance was established by the United Nations and focuses on the opportunities and challenges face by aging populations. This year the theme is  "The Age of Longevity: Rethinking Systems for Longer Lives". The United Nations this year "calls on Governments, civil society, the private sector, researchers and older persons themselves to examine how societies can ensure that the additional years gained translate into healthy, productive, dignified and equitable lives for all" (United Nations, 2026). After reflection on this years theme, one could interpret that the call to action ask us to consider the needs of our population as we live longer, that would contribute to better quality of life and equitable access. As someone in public health I often ask how can we affect positive change or reduce the risk of any particular subject, and in this case it's ageing or the needs of older persons. To this end, I would say that planning for aging for aging before we are older could contribute to ensuring that the additional years gained as we live longer translate into healthy, productive, dignified and equitable lives for all. Bermuda, consider your plans as you age before you get there. This episode of Bermuda Health-Abets, a podcast where we discuss everything from A to Z on healthy living, is dubbed Staying Independent: Planning for the Future. #EmpoweringInformingandMotivating Bermuda residents to live well. Our guests this episode are Sarah D’Alessio, Program Manager at Aging and Disability Services, Ministry of Youth, Social Development & Seniors; And Dr. Pashe Douglas-Sampson, National Seniors' Strategy Project Manager, Ministry of Youth, Social Development & Seniors. During this episode Sarah and Pashe talk about what we need to consider when planning for the future, the resources available for older persons in the community, having the conversation about aging with family, living independently, having control over what happens to you as you age, building your support network and more. As you tune into this episode think about your plan, share it with your family, ask those close to you what their plan is, but most of all do not wait until you are older to make a plan.  If you have a question you need answered or a topic you would like to hear on Bermuda Health-Abets email healthpromotion@gov.bm.
