I Wanted Love. But Did I Have Room for It?

Wanting a relationship and having the capacity to participate in one are not always the same thing. In this episode of Love By Design, I’m reflecting on the year I stepped away from dating and what that season taught me about readiness, emotional bandwidth, and the kind of relationship I actually had room to build. I had spent years moving from one relationship into another. Relationships brought out a version of me that felt more playful, more alive, more connected. But after several meaningful relationships still ended in misalignment, I needed to understand who I was outside of partnership. That meant asking harder questions. What did my life genuinely have space for? What kind of relationship could I participate in without shrinking myself? What had I overlooked when choosing partners in the past? And what does being available for love actually look like in practice? We also talk about why chemistry cannot create capacity, why pacing matters, and why readiness does not mean becoming perfectly healed before allowing love into your life. One idea to sit with: If the relationship you say you want arrived today, what would your life genuinely have room to give it? How clearly do you read a relationship when your feelings are involved? CHEMISTRY IS INFORMATION, NOT INSTRUCTION: Chemistry vs Compatibility in Relationships

Powerful chemistry can feel like proof. Proof that someone is special. Proof that the connection matters. Proof that you should keep going. But chemistry answers only one question: What pulls us together? In this episode of Love By Design, Joan Nwosu explores why intense attraction can distort relationship decisions, how chemistry differs from compatibility, and why strong feelings should be interpreted rather than automatically obeyed. You’ll learn how Relationship Intelligence helps you separate attraction from evidence, assess how a relationship actually functions, and make more conscious choices when your emotions are strong. Inside this episode: Why chemistry can feel more meaningful than it actually isThe difference between Chemistry, Compatibility and Conscious AlignmentHow attraction can make us reinterpret mixed signalsWhy a strong connection does not automatically mean strong relationship potentialThree questions to ask when you feel intensely drawn to someoneHow discernment helps you slow down meaning-making and see the relationship more clearly One idea to remember: Attraction is information. It is not instruction. WHEN EMOTION HIJACKS DISCERNMENT

Discernment requires clear perception. But emotion is one of the most powerful forces that distorts it. Not because emotion is the enemy. Emotion contains real information. But when emotion is allowed to rewrite reality, you stop asking "what is true?" and start asking "how do I make reality support the conclusion I've already chosen?" That shift is subtle. It doesn't announce itself. And it's the moment discernment ends and defending begins. In this episode, Joan breaks down the specific forces that hijack discernment in love; hope, fear, chemistry, loneliness, urgency, sunk cost and what defending looks like in real relationships, and how to feel everything while still asking what is actually true. Key Takeaways Emotion is not the enemy. Emotion contains information. The problem is when emotion is allowed to rewrite reality instead of inform it.The forces that distort perception: hope, fear, chemistry, loneliness, urgency, sunk cost, and the stories you've already told yourself about the relationship. There is a specific moment when discernment ends. The question shifts from "what is actually true here?" to "how do I make reality support the conclusion I've already chosen?" That is defending, not discerning. What defending looks like: explaining away inconsistency, minimizing red flags, amplifying the good to balance the bad, seeking reassurance instead of honest perspective.Sunk cost is one of the most powerful distortions. Time invested explains why leaving is hard. It does not determine whether you should stay.Chemistry hijacks discernment because it feels like confirmation. But intensity is not evidence of alignment. Chemistry tells you something is happening. Discernment asks what that something actually is.Signs your discernment has been hijacked: you're building a case rather than asking a question. You avoid certain conversations because you don't want the answer. You feel defensive when someone reflects the situation back honestly. What to do when emotion is high: name what's present before deciding anything. Create distance between the feeling and the decision. Ask "if this emotion were not present, what would I be seeing?"Urgency is almost always a signal that something needs more examination. Not less. The goal is not to remove emotion from the process. It's to let emotion inform without allowing it to decide. 🎁 Download Your Free Love Gates Report👉 newlovelanguages.com 📖 Pre-Order The New Love LanguagesAvailable November 2026 on Amazon and GracePoint Publishing.
