Galatians 3:1-9 | Blessing Through Faith

Pastor Blaine continues our study in Galatians 3:1–9, reminding us that God’s people are made right with Him through faith—not by works of the law. Just as Abraham believed God and it was counted to him as righteousness, all who belong to Christ share in the blessing promised through faith. The blessing of God has always been received by faith. Join us as we continue our series, No Other Gospel: A Study Through Galatians. Galatians 3:1-9 O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? It was before your eyes that Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified. Let me ask you only this: Did you receive the Spirit by works of the law or by hearing with faith? Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh? Did you suffer so many things in vain—if indeed it was in vain? Does he who supplies the Spirit to you and works miracles among you do so by works of the law, or by hearing with faith—just as Abraham “believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness”? Know then that it is those of faith who are the sons of Abraham. And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, “In you shall all the nations be blessed.” So then, those who are of faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith. Sermon Notes: Main Idea: All God’s People Share the Full Blessing of God by Faith I. All Christians Have Reached Top Level II. All Christians Share the Full Blessing III. All Christians Enjoy the Blessing by Faith Discussion Questions: 1. Paul challenges the Galatians for trying to be perfected by the flesh after beginning by the Spirit. In what ways do we still try to accomplish spiritual growth through our own effort, willpower, or good works rather than depending on the Holy Spirit? 2. What is the difference between believing God and simply believing in God? How does genuine trust in God shape our daily decisions, motivations, and responses to His Word? 3. Paul calls the Galatians foolish for abandoning the truth they had received. How are we sometimes guilty of the same thing? What causes us to let our own reasoning, desires, or circumstances take priority over what God has said? 4. We often pray more earnestly for physical needs and earthly blessings than for spiritual growth. Why do you think that is? How can we grow in our desire for the spiritual blessings we have in Christ while continuing to bring our everyday needs to God? 5. If we are saved by faith and not by works, how do we actively pursue holiness and spiritual growth without turning those practices into a way of earning God's favor?

Galatians 2:15-21 | Justified by Faith

Christ is sufficient. Pastor Blaine continues our study through Galatians in Galatians 2, showing us that our righteousness doesn’t come from what we do, but through faith in Jesus Christ. As we explore the doctrine of justification by faith, we’re reminded that Christ alone is enough. Galatians 2:15-21 We ourselves are Jews by birth and not Gentile sinners; yet we know that a person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, so we also have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the law, because by works of the law no one will be justified. But if, in our endeavor to be justified in Christ, we too were found to be sinners, is Christ then a servant of sin? Certainly not! For if I rebuild what I tore down, I prove myself to be a transgressor. For through the law I died to the law, so that I might live to God. I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. I do not nullify the grace of God, for if righteousness were through the law, then Christ died for no purpose. Sermon Notes Main Idea: Christ Alone Is Sufficient for All Our Righteousness I. We Are Declared Right before God by Faith II. We Are Made Dead to the Law by the Cross III. We Are Living Righteous to God by Christ Discussion Questions: 1. What does it mean to be justified by faith, and why is justification important for the Christian? 2. How is justification different from sanctification and glorification? Why is it important that we understand the distinction between these three aspects of our salvation? 3. In Galatians 2:20, Paul says that he has been “crucified with Christ” and that Christ lives in him. What does it mean for us to be both “dead” to our old life and “alive” through Christ? What might that look like in our everyday lives? 4. Pastor Blaine said that true faith is not perfect faith. So, what constitutes genuine faith in Christ? What does true faith look like in the life of a believer?

    Galatians 2:1-10 | Gospel-Ministry Affirmations

Pastor Josh Cody continues preaching from the book of Galatians as he dives into Paul's apostolic ministry. Galatians 2:1-10 Then after fourteen years I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, taking Titus along with me. I went up because of a revelation and set before them (though privately before those who seemed influential) the gospel that I proclaim among the Gentiles, in order to make sure I was not running or had not run in vain. But even Titus, who was with me, was not forced to be circumcised, though he was a Greek. Yet because of false brothers secretly brought in—who slipped in to spy out our freedom that we have in Christ Jesus, so that they might bring us into slavery—to them we did not yield in submission even for a moment, so that the truth of the gospel might be preserved for you. And from those who seemed to be influential (what they were makes no difference to me; God shows no partiality)—those, I say, who seemed influential added nothing to me. On the contrary, when they saw that I had been entrusted with the gospel to the uncircumcised, just as Peter had been entrusted with the gospel to the circumcised (for he who worked through Peter for his apostolic ministry to the circumcised worked also through me for mine to the Gentiles), and when James and Cephas and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace that was given to me, they gave the right hand of fellowship to Barnabas and me, that we should go to the Gentiles and they to the circumcised. Only, they asked us to remember the poor, the very thing I was eager to do. Sermon Notes: Main Point: Paul’s Apostolic Ministry is Validated on God’s Authority not Man’s Approval. I. Apostolic Ministry Stands on God's Authority II. Apostolic Ministry Stands Against False Brothers III. Apostolic Ministry Stands Affirmed by the Other Apostles Discussion Questions: 1. Why does Paul say he went up to Jerusalem? (vv. 1–2) 2. What did Paul set before the leaders in Jerusalem, and why did he do it privately? (v. 2) 3. What would have been at stake if the Jerusalem church had rejected Paul's gospel? 4. Where does Paul's authority as an apostle come from? (Gal 1:1) 5. What qualified Paul to be an apostle? (Acts 1:21–26) 6. Can someone today legitimately claim the same kind of apostolic authority Paul had? 7. Why can we be hesitant to clearly say what we believe? 8. Why would Jewish Christians have believed Gentile Christians needed to be circumcised? (Gen. 17:9–14) 9. What are some good or wise things Christians can turn into rules that God never commanded? 10. What happens when we treat our man-made rules as if they were God's commands? How does that affect our freedom in Christ? 11. What did the “right hand of fellowship” communicate about Paul's gospel and ministry? (vv. 7–10) 12. Where are you most tempted to measure your faithfulness by meeting other people's expectations rather than by trusting and obeying Christ?

    Galatians 1:11-24 | Gospel-Ministry Origins

Pastor Blaine continues in Galatians, preaching about how Gospel ministry is FROM God and FOR God. Galatians 1:11-24 For I would have you know, brothers, that the gospel that was preached by me is not man's gospel. For I did not receive it from any man, nor was I taught it, but I received it through a revelation of Jesus Christ. For you have heard of my former life in Judaism, how I persecuted the church of God violently and tried to destroy it. And I was advancing in Judaism beyond many of my own age among my people, so extremely zealous was I for the traditions of my fathers. But when he who had set me apart before I was born, and who called me by his grace, was pleased to reveal his Son to me, in order that I might preach him among the Gentiles, I did not immediately consult with anyone; nor did I go up to Jerusalem to those who were apostles before me, but I went away into Arabia, and returned again to Damascus. Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to visit Cephas and remained with him fifteen days. But I saw none of the other apostles except James the Lord's brother. (In what I am writing to you, before God, I do not lie!) Then I went into the regions of Syria and Cilicia. And I was still unknown in person to the churches of Judea that are in Christ. They only were hearing it said, “He who used to persecute us is now preaching the faith he once tried to destroy.” And they glorified God because of me. Sermon Notes: Main Idea: True Gospel Ministry Is From God and For God I. True Gospel Ministry Does Not Require a Predisposition II. True Gospel Ministry Does Require a Gift of Grace III. True Gospel Ministry Does Not Require Notoriety Discussion Questions: 1. In what way(s) do we view non-believers as either "close" to Jesus or "far" from Jesus? 2. Which of the three categories that Pastor Blaine gave do you find yourself in? 3. In what ways are you stewarding the true Gospel ministry given to you? 4. How can churches help people distinguish between a true and genuine calling to ministry and simply desiring a ministry position? 5. How would our church look differently if God's glory was the measure of success? (Galatians 1:24- "And the glorified God because of me."
