E46 - Kaito Needed Scottish Sunshine to Play This Game

Disclaimer: Listener discretion is advised for our segment on Tokyo Gore Police. Kaito walks Red through parts of the film and discusses the work of director Yoshihiro Nishimura, which means things get a little gory. With a title like Tokyo Gore Police, you probably saw that coming. This week on The Kaito and Red Show, we dive into the latest gaming news and video game discussions, including Red's dream of switching to a split keyboard and the painful consequences that followed. We also take a look at 007 First Light, which is finally out and looking phenomenal, discuss reports that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt will be receiving new DLC more than a decade after its original release, and talk about Valve's latest Steam Deck price increases. Away from gaming, Kaito introduces Red to the wonderfully bizarre world of Tokyo Gore Police and the legacy of its late director, Yoshihiro Nishimura, leading to one of the stranger conversations we've had on the show. On the games front, Red checks in with Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020, while Kaito takes advantage of a rare stretch of Scottish sunshine to play Boktai 2: Solar Boy Django, one of the most unique ideas ever put into a video game. He'll explain why Hideo Kojima's sun-powered Game Boy Advance series remains such a fascinating concept even today. For this week's Question of the Week, we tackle a listener email comparing Gunpla and Warhammer before discussing collecting as a hobby, why we do it, and whether a collection can eventually become more burden than joy. E45 - We Were Not Ready for Evangelion Gunpla

This week on The Kaito and Red Show, Kaito accidentally gave Red yet another expensive hobby after discovering an Evangelion Gunpla model kit that immediately sent both of them down the rabbit hole. As if collecting video games wasn’t already enough, the temptation of giant robots and model kits proved far too strong to ignore. We also dive into the latest gaming news, including Tomodachi Life continuing its surprisingly massive success, the unfortunate downfall of Gang of Dragons, and the sad story of GrammaCrackers getting swatted. On top of that, Red somehow couldn’t resist buying a brand-new custom shell for his Game Boy Advance SP. This one is particularly special. For the games we play, Red started Shining Force: Resurrection of the Dark Dragon on the GBA and talks about why the classic tactical RPG feels like the perfect throwback to a different era of gaming. Meanwhile, Kaito finished Unicorn Overlord, became completely addicted to Vampire Crawlers, checked out Starbites, and also played the demo for The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales. In other words, a fairly normal gaming week for him. It’s a surprisingly packed week of retro gaming, RPGs, handheld nostalgia, and questionable financial decisions.  Chapters: (00:00:00) Start of the Show (00:01:09) Forbidden Planet (00:02:12) Evangelion Gunpla Model Kits (00:08:29) Stuff happened (00:08:38) Tomodachi Life keeps selling (00:13:20) RIP Gang of Dragon (00:16:46) GrammaCrackers got swatted (00:21:02) New shell for the GBA SP (00:26:14) Games we play (00:26:25) Shining Force: Resurrection of the Dark Dragon (GBA) (00:37:48) Finished Unicorn Overlord (00:38:59) Vampire Crawlers addiction (00:44:22) Starbites released (00:49:33) The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales Demo (00:51:41) Kaito's confession (00:53:13) Question of the Week (00:59:55) Contact us (01:00:41) Kaito's Shower Thought The Kaito and Red Show — A weekly video game podcast covering retro games, gaming news, and new releases.      Send us Fan Mail Find us on BlueSky for more discussions and behind the scenes content: https://bsky.app/profile/kaitoandred.com

E44 - The Mass Effect Ending Only Red Could Get

Warning: This episode contains major spoilers for the Mass Effect Trilogy and Baldur’s Gate 3. This week on The Kaito and Red Show, we finally wrap up the legendary Mass Effect Trilogy in an extra-long spoiler-filled video game podcast episode dedicated entirely to BioWare’s iconic sci-fi RPG series. Instead of covering the usual gaming news and weekly segments, we go all-in on Mass Effect, breaking down the series and discussing why the trilogy remains one of the most important RPG franchises in video game history. But we didn’t want to make just another Mass Effect retrospective. Rather than repeating the same conversations everyone else has already had, we explore bigger questions about the series, its choices, characters, worldbuilding, and the decisions that shaped the Mass Effect universe. Along the way, we debate what the games could have been, which factions and institutions worked best in the story, and how Mass Effect became a legend. We’ll also kick things off with an ending that somehow only Red could have achieved. If you love Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2, Mass Effect 3, BioWare RPGs, sci-fi video games, and deep gaming discussions, according to us, this is arguably the best episode for you - probably😁. Once the journey is over, Kaito also picks the next game Red will have to play. Chapters: (00:00:00) Start of the Show (00:02:26) Today's episode: Mass Effect - The Trilogy (00:03:31) Spoiler Warning (00:04:25) Red's ending of Mass Effect 3 (00:27:16) Mrs Red's reaction to my ending (00:30:35) Mass Effect 2 is the worst game in the trilogy (00:40:16) Mass Effect 1 sacrifice (00:41:32) Mass Effect - what it is and what it could have been (00:52:11) Which institutions worked and which didn't? E43 - We Need to Talk About Mass Effect 3’s DLCs

This week on The Kaito and Red Show, we dive into the latest gaming news and video game discussions, including why players choose consoles over PC and why full-price games are becoming harder to sell in today’s industry. We also talk about the surprise Star Fox Direct and discuss whether a 20-hour campaign could hurt 007 First Light. On the games front, Red needs to have a serious word with Kaito about the Mass Effect 3 DLCs after a listener email revealed he had no idea what he was actually playing. We’re finally nearing the end of Mass Effect 3 and will wrap up the journey next episode. Meanwhile, Kaito finished Fire Emblem Engage and unexpectedly jumped into Mario & Luigi: Brothership, a game Red never touched. For this week’s Question of the Week, we discuss our favorite video game controllers and what really matters in controller design. Kaito’s answer left Red a bit speechless. Chapters: (00:00:00) Start of the Show (00:05:59) Stuff happened (00:06:13) Why do you play games on a console? E42 - Shepard Saved the Galaxy and Still Can’t Afford Rent

This week on The Kaito and Red Show, we break down the latest gaming news and biggest stories in video games, including Sony’s clarification on its new PlayStation DRM system and what it could mean for players going forward. We also cover the launch of Diablo IV: Lord of Hatred, where Red would like a word with Blizzard about its monetization strategy, early reactions to Valve’s new Steam Controller, and why Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 continues to rule with its ongoing roadmap and post-launch support. We also played some games this week. While Red still doesn’t own Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream, he already has an island idea he hasn’t seen anyone else come up with yet. Meanwhile, Mass Effect 3 somehow turned into a CSI episode as Red makes the case for why Shepard’s housing situation is completely unfair. At the same time, Kaito restarted Fire Emblem Engage once again after realizing he wasn’t playing on the hardest difficulty possible. For this week’s Question of the Week, we imagine what our ideal real-life boss would look like if they were based on a video game character.
