The Dark History of the Ridges Asylum

The Haunting History of The RidgesThis week on Spectre Sisters, Blue, Nyx, and Bri head to Athens, Ohio, to explore the dark and unsettling history of The Ridges, formerly known as the Athens Lunatic Asylum. Opened in 1874, The Ridges was intended to provide care and treatment for people suffering from mental illness. But as the patient population grew, at times reaching more than 2,000 people, the reality inside the institution became much darker, with overcrowding, experimental treatments, neglect, restraints, isolation, and other disturbing practices. The hospital remained in operation until 1993, leaving behind more than a century of history, tragedy, and countless stories. Today, The Ridges is part of Ohio University, but many believe that the spirits of those who suffered there never truly left. The HauntingsThe sisters dive into reports of: Phantom footsteps echoing through empty hallwaysVoices calling out the names of former patientsScreams coming from supposedly empty roomsShadow figures disappearing into wallsObjects moving on their ownDoors opening and closing by themselvesUnexplained cold spotsEVPs captured by paranormal investigatorsApparitions appearing in the surrounding groundsThe feeling of being watchedStrange lights appearing inside buildingsA mysterious child crying and a fading lullabyVisitors reporting unexplained touches and breathing sensations The episode also explores some of the locations said to be particularly active, including the West Hall, rooms 7, 8, and 12, and Ward N20. The Story of Margaret SchillingOne of the most disturbing stories connected to The Ridges is the death of Margaret Schilling, a patient who disappeared in December 1978. Six weeks later, her body was discovered in an unused upper-floor ward. According to the story discussed in the episode, she had removed and neatly folded her clothing before lying down on the unheated concrete floor, where she eventually died from exposure. What makes the story even more unsettling is the claim that a human-shaped stain remained on the concrete where her body had been—and that attempts to clean it were unsuccessful. The sisters also discuss the reports of a woman in a pale gown who is sometimes seen near an upper window, with some believing the apparition could be Margaret. Firsthand Experiences & Reddit Stories The episode also takes a look at firsthand accounts shared online, including a story from an Ohio University student who claimed to encounter a small, featureless shadow figure near the abandoned tuberculosis ward. Other stories include a mysterious flash of blue light appearing inside a dorm room and a flashlight that allegedly stopped working inside the Ridges—only to turn back on once the group made it outside. Remembering the People Behind the StoriesBeyond the ghosts and legends, the sisters take time to talk about the human history of The Ridges. The property contains three historic cemeteries, including graves associated with patients who died at the hospital and whose remains were reportedly left without their names on the grave markers. The episode reflects on how disturbing it is that some people were remembered only by numbers. The sisters emphasize that, whether listeners believe in ghosts or not, the people who lived and died at The Ridges deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. Visiting The RidgesThe episode also discusses what visitors can legally access today. The grounds, walking trails, and historic cemeteries can be visited during appropriate hours, while many of the older, unrestored buildings and wards remain off-limits. The Kennedy Museum of Art, located in the restored central building, provides one legitimate way to experience part of the historic property. The sisters encourage listeners to respect posted restrictions and avoid trespassing or entering unsafe areas. Have You Experienced the Ridges?Have you visited The Ridges? Our Night at the Lewisburg Haunted Cave

Our Night at the Lewisburg Haunted Cave ft. Connor The Spectre Sisters are heading underground! In this episode, Bri, Nyx, and Blue are joined by special guest Connor Moores as they talk all about their recent experience at the Lewisburg Haunted Cave. The group had the opportunity to experience the haunt firsthand, with Bri capturing footage on a GoPro while Connor brought along his camera to document the night. From creepy scare actors and elaborate animatronics to disorienting illusions and winding cave pathways, there was plenty to talk about once they made it back above ground. But navigating the cave wasn't exactly straightforward. The haunt features multiple paths that can send visitors in different directions, meaning every trip through can be a little different. The group even found themselves circling back through the same areas, and Bri may or may not have accidentally followed a scare actor into an area she wasn't supposed to enter! The crew also shares some of their favorite parts of the experience, including the twisting tunnel illusion, moving lights, practical effects, underground water, bridges, chainsaws, and massive animatronics. One particularly memorable moment involved Blue being pulled aside for an attempted electrocution…only for the effect not to work! And because this is the Spectre Sisters, the conversation doesn't stay serious for long. Expect plenty of chaos, jokes, stories about getting lost, interactions with the scare actors, and an unexpected discussion about surviving a zombie apocalypse. The group also talks about what makes the Lewisburg Haunted Cave stand out, including how much work goes into creating the experience and training the scare actors. They discuss how the haunt changes and evolves and how the staff work to keep the experience fresh for returning visitors. So grab your flashlight, watch your step, and whatever you do…Don't follow the scare actors into their hiding places. The Spectre Sisters Interview Christian Kenny

Spectre Sisters: Christian Kenny With The Psychology of the Unknown What happens when tarot, astrology, psychology, mathematics, true crime, and the occult collide? In this episode of Spectre Sisters, Blue, Nyx, and Bri sit down with artist, creator, and publisher Christian Kenny for a fascinating conversation about his work exploring tarot, occult systems, human behavior, and the unknown. Christian has spent years studying the occult and creating multimedia projects, including books, games, tarot decks, software, websites, and more. His work goes far beyond simply creating beautiful cards, he approaches these subjects through a combination of art, research, mathematics, psychology, and a healthy dose of skepticism. One of the major topics of the conversation is Killer Cards Tarot, a deck that connects infamous true-crime figures with traditional tarot archetypes. Christian explains that the individuals featured on the cards weren't simply assigned to cards based on personal opinions. Instead, their birth information was processed through traditional occult and astrological systems to determine their corresponding cards. The results led to some startling connections and ultimately inspired Christian to develop Aurora, a system designed to provide investigators with capability percentages that could potentially help prioritize suspects rather than predict guilt or innocence. The Sisters also dive into the idea of shadow work and why confronting the uncomfortable parts of ourselves can be an important part of personal growth. Christian discusses how people can bury difficult experiences, emotions, and trauma rather than confronting them, and how those unresolved issues can influence the way we think and behave. Christian also shares his approach to learning tarot. Rather than immediately memorizing card definitions, he recommends developing intuition by pulling a card each morning and reflecting on how its imagery and symbolism connect with experiences throughout the day. The conversation takes a deeper philosophical turn as the Sisters and Christian discuss intuition, spirituality, consciousness, and what we actually mean when we call something "supernatural." Christian explains why he doesn't necessarily consider tarot or astrology inherently spiritual, while acknowledging that both can be incorporated into spiritual practices. The episode also explores the difference between tarot decks, oracle decks, and novelty decks, including what makes a tarot deck structurally functional rather than simply a collection of themed artwork. And Christian has plenty more projects in the works. He discusses the second edition of Killer Cards Tarot, the upcoming companion book, Circuits of Consciousness, the upcoming World Stage Tarot, and a children's tarot project designed to teach lessons and morals through bedtime stories. Of course, no Spectre Sisters interview would be complete without a paranormal question. Christian reveals that he once unknowingly stayed at the infamous Cecil Hotel in Los Angeles, and only learned about its dark history afterward. From tarot and astrology to psychology, skepticism, true crime, intuition, and the strange connections hidden within human behavior, this episode takes the Sisters into territory they've never quite explored before. Listen in as the Spectre Sisters get curious, ask questions, and take a deeper look at the systems and ideas behind the unknown.
