    Stop Training Like You’re 25

Stop mourning the person you used to be at 25. That younger version of you might have been fitter, leaner, faster or stronger. But they also had a completely different life. They probably had more time, fewer responsibilities, less stress, no kids, no demanding career, no mortgage, and more freedom to train whenever they wanted. In this episode of Beast of Burden, I talk about why so many busy adults get stuck comparing themselves to the person they used to be. “I used to be fit.” “I used to run.” “I used to lift heavy.” “I used to play sport.” “I used to be able to train all the time.” That may be true, but it may no longer be useful. The system that worked when you were younger may not work now. Not because you are finished, but because your life has changed. If you are over 40, with a career, family, travel, stress and responsibilities, you need a different approach. You need a system that fits the life you actually have, not the life you had 20 years ago. I talk about why twice-a-week strength training can be enough when it is done properly, why trying to go from zero to five sessions a week usually fails, and why stacking habits slowly often beats trying to change everything at once. The key point is this: you do not need to go back to who you were. You need to build the version of you that works now. Stop Questioning Your Progress: The Truth About Results

At some point in your fitness journey, you are going to want to give up. It might happen when the scale stops moving. It might happen when your lifts stall. It might happen when training feels repetitive, food feels boring, or life starts getting in the way. That moment is normal. In this episode of Beast of Burden, I talk about the part of the fitness journey people rarely discuss: the point where the original excitement fades and the reality of the work kicks in. At the beginning, it is easy to imagine the transformation. You picture yourself leaner, stronger, more confident and more in control. But then the beginner gains slow down. The timeline starts to feel longer than expected. You realise the basics need to be done for longer than you hoped. That is when people start questioning everything. This episode is about what to do when you reach that point. I cover why progress is not linear, why unrealistic timelines make people feel like they are failing, and why wanting to quit is often a sign that you are moving into the next stage of the journey. I also talk about why things like menopause, injury, medication, GLP-1 use, poor sleep, stress and busy family or work life can all change the timeline, without changing the need for the basics. The key point is this: wanting to give up does not mean you should stop. It usually means you need support, perspective and a better understanding of the timeline. Do Men and Women Need Different Training? (The Real Truth)

Do Men and Women Need Different Training? (The Real Truth) Is training a man really that different from training a woman? In this podcast, Paul Owner of Hounds of Health breaks down the psychological and physical differences he sees every day as a coach in Wandsworth, London. While the biological basics of getting stronger and leaner are universal, the approach and the challenges busy professionals face—can vary wildly between the sexes. What we cover in this video: The Mindset Gap: Why women are often more explicit about their struggles while men take a more "procedural" approach. The "Lone Wolf" Syndrome: Why men often wait longer to seek help and how it impacts their results. The "Bulky" Myth: Addressing the common fear women have about lifting heavy weights. Physiological Reality: Why men see faster upper-body gains, but women often dominate in mental fortitude and endurance. Training Through Life Stages: The importance of strength training for women during perimenopause and menopause. The Basics First: Why mastering the squat and deadlift is more important than "gender-specific" exercises. Whether you're looking to build confidence in the gym, drop body fat, or simply take charge of your health as a busy professional, this video explores how to look past categorizations and focus on what works for you as an individual. Why Being a Beginner Again Feels So Hard

One of the hardest things to do as an adult is become a beginner again. You may be successful at work. You may manage teams, run projects, build businesses, make decisions under pressure and handle serious responsibility. But then you walk into a gym after years away from exercise and suddenly you feel like you know nothing. That can feel uncomfortable, frustrating and even embarrassing. In this episode of Beast of Burden, I talk about why so many busy professionals struggle when they try to restart their fitness. It is not usually because they are lazy or unmotivated. Often, it is because they are used to being competent, and the gym makes them feel like a beginner again. I cover why the gym can feel intimidating, why adults often struggle with the ego hit of starting again, and why a good coaching environment should help reduce that anxiety rather than make it worse. I also talk about what learning to rollerblade taught me about starting from scratch, making mistakes, feeling awkward, and giving yourself enough time to build real skill. The key point is this: you do not need to reinvent yourself to get fit. You already have skills from your career and life that can help you. If you can track performance at work, you can track your food. If you can keep a team accountable, you can keep yourself accountable. If you can organise projects, you can organise your training. You are not useless. You are just learning to apply your existing skills in a new area. At Hounds of Health, we help busy professionals in Wandsworth and Putney take charge of their health with structured strength training, nutrition, accountability and coaching that makes the process less overwhelming. How Do You Know If You’re in a Calorie Deficit?

How do you actually know if you’re in a calorie deficit? Most people judge fat loss by the scales alone. If the number goes down, they feel like it’s working. If it stays the same, they panic, get frustrated, or assume they’re failing. But the scales are only one piece of the picture. In this episode of Beast of Burden, I break down how to know whether fat loss is really happening, why weight can fluctuate so much, and why tracking your data matters if you want to stop guessing. We cover: • Why weight loss is the most common, but often most confusing, progress metric • What a calorie deficit actually means • Why your daily weight can change even when you’re doing the right things • The role of BMR, movement, steps and training • Why most people underestimate how much they eat • Why hunger is not always a sign something is wrong • The difference between calorie tracking and behavioural strategies • Why measurements, photos, body scans and trends matter • How to stop being controlled by one number on the scales The main message is simple: you cannot manage what you refuse to measure. If you want to change your body composition, lose fat, build strength and feel more in control of your health, you need a system. Not just motivation. Not just hope. A system. My name is Paul. I run Hounds of Health in Wandsworth and Putney, London, where we help busy people build strength, lose body fat and take control of their health with proper coaching, structure and accountability.
