Your Body Is Smarter Than You

I've tried to record this episode four times. I have four copies of it on a hard drive somewhere, and I never committed. Today I did. I'm fat. Fat isn't a bad word, it's an adjective, and I'll tell you why I say it the way I do. After 39 years in this body and 25 years of dieting, I want to talk about what being fat has meant for my life: the matching outfits when I was five, the JV list my name wasn't on, my first diet at 12, and the weight loss surgery I had at 19 that is still affecting my body today. I'll also tell you about the morning I watched my toddler pull the scale out from under my bed, and how that started everything changing. This isn't a "here's how I fixed my body" story, because I didn't. It's the story of how I stopped fighting it. If I could get one message across, it would be that your body is good, wherever it is. If you've got a story of your own, I want to hear it. Books and people who changed my life are in the show notes. Content note: this episode includes childhood dieting, disordered eating, weight loss surgery and its complications, and weight stigma. Take care of yourself while you listen  and go love your body this week.   Books mentioned in this episode:   If you're not sure where to begin, these three are a great place to start:  Anti-Diet: Reclaim Your Time, Money, Well-Being, and Happiness Through Intuitive Eating by Christy Harrison  The F**k It Diet: Eating Should Be Easy by Caroline Dooner  Health at Every Size: The Surprising Truth About Your Weight by Lindo Bacon Support the show

"Parenting Sucks (and that's okay) !" with Jess

Let's just say it: parenting sucks. Nobody tells you that going in, and if they do, you don't believe them until you're in it. This episode is me and Jess — childhood friends who found our way back to each other through the internet — sitting down and finally saying out loud what everyone's thinking but nobody posts about. We talk about the stuff that doesn't make it into the baby books: postpartum depression, birth plans that go out the window the second labor starts, regretting the decision but never the kid, and why "it gets better" is kind of a lie. It doesn't get better. It gets different. Some days that's a relief. Some days parenting still just sucks. We compare it to leveling up in a video game because honestly that's what it feels like — you clear one boss and there's just another one waiting. We talk about the darkest parts of postpartum, the shame that keeps parents quiet, and why it's fine to love your kid and hate your Tuesday. Parenting sucks on Tuesdays. It might be great on Wednesday. Both are true. If you've ever felt like a piece-of-shit mom, questioned every choice you've made, or thought you were the only one who felt this way — you're not. Parenting sucks. It's also not going to break you. You're going to be okay. In this episode: Why our generation is the first to say "I don't think I want kids" out loudPostpartum depression, regret, and the shame that keeps parents silentBirth stories and birth plans, and why neither one matters as much as you think going inParenting as a video game — comparing struggles to leveling upThe internet as both a lifeline and a battleground for parentsWhy parenting sucks one minute and feels like magic the next — and why both are allowedI hope this resonates with you, and I wills ee you here next week for another amazing conversation!  Love, Cherie Leigh Support the show
