Ep. 67 - Husband and Wife Farming Together: The Scary Truth About Working With Your Spouse

Heidi Olson sits down with her husband Kirk — again — for a Halloween episode about the scary truths of working with your spouse in a family farm operation. Twenty-three years of farming together, two daughters raised in it, and the conversations they wish someone had forced them to have first. What people say when they find out you work together. The warning labels each of them would wear ("do not second guess, do not disrespect, and walk away if she gets red"). What "I need you for five minutes" actually means on a farm. What a one-day job swap would reveal about how much of the morning disappears before the combine ever moves. They also get into raising girls who can run equipment — loading trucks, cleaning bins, and the Menards parking lot where nobody believed they could load a grill — plus the "so you just farm then?" comment that still grinds, and the math, markets, chemistry, and weather that a day of farming actually requires. Then the part worth sending to a couple who's thinking about coming back: what to talk through before you pack the moving van. Whether this is the life you want or just what's expected of you. Compensation, housing, who makes decisions, and why a verbal agreement is like holding water in a colander. Ends with the Halloween lightning round — who's more likely to save a mysterious bolt, lose their phone while holding it, or turn a quick trip to town into a two-hour visit. Your homework, if you're working with your spouse: tell them one specific thing they do that makes your day better, then ask what they'd put on your warning label. Lead with the compliment. Ep. 65 - Why Your Daughter-in-Law Doesn't Feel Welcome on the Farm

What if the biggest threat to your ranch legacy isn't money — it's how you treat the people who marry in? Welcome back to the Pathfinder Legacy Podcast with Heidi Olson, founder of Pathfinder Legacy Advisor and Certified Farm Succession Planner. In Episode 65 of our October Skeletons in the Closet series, Heidi shares the story of "Jessie" — the only daughter-in-law in a Wyoming ranch family who spent over a decade auditioning for acceptance she never got. After a false character rumor spread by family followed Jessie into the community, every gathering, church pew, and grocery run felt like a test. At home it was no easier: fixing up a ranch house she was told was still "someone else's," walks-ins without knocking, expected help that was then criticized, and being told she was "too sensitive" when she spoke up. Heidi breaks down what this has to do with succession: Why would a couple invest more money, work, and risk — and raise their kids there — when their daily experience tells them they're useful but not trusted or respected? You'll hear what the husband's role has to be, how to actually correct a rumor (not just privately apologize), and how to set boundaries around privacy, work, and decisions that affect the household. Reflection for this week: What have we done that makes someone in the family feel they do not belong? Names and identifying details have been changed for privacy. Ep. 62 - Is Your Neighbor Okay? Suicide Prevention in Rural America

I'm fine doesn't always mean everything's fine. In episode 62 of the Pathfinder Legacy podcast, Heidi Olson talks with Mandy Young of Tailgate Time about farm stress, warning signs, and how to help a neighbor who is silently struggling. September is Suicide Prevention Month. This conversation is for every farm and ranch family — how to recognize when someone may be struggling, what to say (and what not to say), and why asking for help is strength, not weakness. In this episode: - Why September matters and Mandy's story into agricultural mental health work - What Tailgate Time means — meeting farmers where they are, from the tailgate to the farm shop - Warning signs family, bankers, agronomists and neighbors can watch for: withdrawal, irritability, loss of motivation, sleep problems, isolation, increased alcohol use, risky decisions - What to say: "You matter more than any yield," "How can I support you right now?" and how to ask directly about suicide - What not to say: "just toughen up," "others have it worse," "just stay positive" - What to do next if someone says they're thinking about suicide — don't leave them alone, remove access to means, build on their reason to stay, and call for help - Kids on the farm, faith, pride, stigma, and breaking generational cycles - Privacy in small towns, telehealth, and how Tailgate Time protects confidentiality - Resources beyond Arkansas, including the FarmAid resource directory For guides, checklists, and planning tools to help you navigate life's financial decisions with clarity and confidence, visit: https://pathfinderlegacy.com/resources/

Ep. 60 - Should Your Adult Child Come Back to the Farm? Ask This First

An adult child says "I want to come home to the farm." Mom and dad hear successor. Their spouse hears "where will we live?" Siblings hear "there goes the farm." Same sentence, four different conversations. In Episode 60 of the Pathfinder Legacy Podcast, host Heidi Olson breaks down the conversation every farm family must have BEFORE the moving trailer is packed. This is a follow-up to Episode 59 with husband Kirk on launching your kids — now, what happens when they're ready to come back? Heidi pulls cards from the Pathfinder Legacy Conversation Card Game and walks through 4 real-life roads home: 1. Obligation Roadblock — crisis decides (Martin Hansen story from Ep. 19-20) 2. Happy Trails Ahead — clear agreement with fair compensation 3. Manipulation at a Crossroads — hidden caregiving expectations 4. No Choice, a T in the Road — limited options at 18 that never got revisited You'll learn the owner questions to ask (Is there a real job? What are we actually offering?), the successor questions to ask (What does my household need? What am I expecting for pay, housing, time off?), plus how to use the Compass, Trailhead, Handoff & Horizon, Compensation Clarity, and Role Map cards to set voice, vote, veto, pay, and a 90-day review with exit ramp. Coming home should be an invitation to build something together, not a summons to carry obligation nobody said out loud.
