In this episode of Canadian Reformer, Daniel covers seven recent stories every Canadian should know. *Note these are brief summaries. Listeners are strongly encouraged to look into each story on their own and not be quick to assume any positions by the host. Although there are many stories taking place around the world, the primary focus of these events relate to BC and Canada.* #1 Reports Emerge of the Middle School Stabbing in Kelowna, BC When reports first emerged that Springvalley Middle School had gone into lockdown in Kelowna, British Columbia, and a youth had been arrested, the public was left with the impression that it was a frightening but relatively minor event. RCMP initially described what occurred as “suspicious circumstances” at the school, and media reports suggested a student had suffered little more than a superficial scratch from a dull kitchen knife. According to the BC Prosecution Service, the youth apprehended in the Springvalley attack now faces seven charges: two counts of assault with a weapon, three counts of assault, one count of uttering threats, and one count of possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose. The case remains before the courts, and because the accused is a youth, much of the evidence and proceedings remain protected from publication. (Credit: RebelNews) * Trans tween stabber in B.C.? Conservative, Independent MLA Amelia Boultbee has officially crossed the floor to join the B.C. NDP government, citing that the Conservative base wants to take the party who voted her in “further and further to the right.” Boultbee resigned from the B.C. Conservative party last year while the party’s first leader John Rustad was still in office. She has also taken shots at the new party leader Kerry Lynne-Findlay accusing her of being elected by a base drawn to “Donald Trump-style populism.” (Credit: Juno News) * Former BC Conservative MLA joins BC NDP - Juno News Article * Penticton-Summerland MLA Amelia Boultbee crosses floor to join BC NDP caucus - Western Standard Article * Former B.C. The Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms claims to be receiving reports that some Canadians are being contacted at their homes by government officials about social media posts made months or even years ago. These reports come after the passage of Bill C-9, the Combatting Hate Act, which expands Canada’s hate speech laws by creating new offences, increasing penalties, and removing certain legal safeguards that previously limited prosecutions for hate-related expression. The ruling confirms that public spaces like Parliament Hill remain important forums for political expression. The Court’s reasoning confirms that that government cannot restrict expression simply because it is offensive, thought to be inaccurate, or viewed as potentially harmful to some people.
