Ep 33: The News Scroll - Summer Edition

In this episode of Canadian Reformer, Daniel covers seven recent stories every Canadian should know. *Note these are brief summaries. Listeners are strongly encouraged to look into each story on their own and not be quick to assume any positions by the host. Although there are many stories taking place around the world, the primary focus of these events relate to BC and Canada.* #1 Reports Emerge of the Middle School Stabbing in Kelowna, BC When reports first emerged that Springvalley Middle School had gone into lockdown in Kelowna, British Columbia, and a youth had been arrested, the public was left with the impression that it was a frightening but relatively minor event. RCMP initially described what occurred as “suspicious circumstances” at the school, and media reports suggested a student had suffered little more than a superficial scratch from a dull kitchen knife. According to the BC Prosecution Service, the youth apprehended in the Springvalley attack now faces seven charges: two counts of assault with a weapon, three counts of assault, one count of uttering threats, and one count of possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose. The case remains before the courts, and because the accused is a youth, much of the evidence and proceedings remain protected from publication. (Credit: RebelNews) * Trans tween stabber in B.C.? Pray for the school staff to speak up to authorities. Pray for transparency in the search for answers. * Consider contacting your local school trustee and ask what they would do if you were one of the parents in such a scenario. * Consider enrolling your children in a Christian private school. * Email the BC Education Minister MLA. Contact Page HERE. Tell her you are shocked to find the details of this school incident months later. Ask her what she will do to protect these parents and children from further harm. Find your MLA’s email at https://www.leg.bc.ca/members #2 Former B.C. Conservative MLA joins NDP government Originally elected as a B.C. Conservative, Independent MLA Amelia Boultbee has officially crossed the floor to join the B.C. NDP government, citing that the Conservative base wants to take the party who voted her in “further and further to the right.” Boultbee resigned from the B.C. Conservative party last year while the party’s first leader John Rustad was still in office. She has also taken shots at the new party leader Kerry Lynne-Findlay accusing her of being elected by a base drawn to “Donald Trump-style populism.” (Credit: Juno News) * Former BC Conservative MLA joins BC NDP - Juno News Article * Penticton-Summerland MLA Amelia Boultbee crosses floor to join BC NDP caucus - Western Standard Article * Former B.C. Conservative turned Independent MLA Amelia Boultbee crosses the floor to the NDP - CBC News * MLA Boultbee X-Post Critizies the BC Conservative Party - Jul 28th, 2026 Call to action: 1) Email your MLA. Share your thoughts about this story. Tell them a MLA should have a by-election before crossing to another political party. Find your MLA’s email at https://www.leg.bc.ca/members #3 Bill C-9 is Law. Are you accused of a crime? The Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms claims to be receiving reports that some Canadians are being contacted at their homes by government officials about social media posts made months or even years ago. These reports come after the passage of Bill C-9, the Combatting Hate Act, which expands Canada’s hate speech laws by creating new offences, increasing penalties, and removing certain legal safeguards that previously limited prosecutions for hate-related expression. (Credit: JCCF) * JCCF X-Post - Jul 21, 2026 * Report a case - The Justice Centre provides legal representation to courageous Canadians willing to defend their constitutional rights and freedoms in court or before tribunals. * Bill C-9 is Now Law - ARPA Canada - June 26th, 2026 Call to action: * Visit the JCCF webpage to learn about the cases they are currently fighting for. Pray for the JCCF team and those they are representing in court. Consider making a donation to JCCF. #4 Teacher fired for speaking truth on Kamloops gets day in court For refusing to jump on the Kamloops “mass graves” narrative bandwagon, high school teacher Jim McMurtry was sacked by educational authorities, abandoned by his union and refused a hearing before a labour relations board. Now, five years after first being walked out of a classroom as Indian residential school hysteria swept Canada, McMurtry is heading to B.C. Supreme Court in a case that he hopes will expose the truth about Kamloops. Tell them that the truth must be at the foundation of our society, and therefore, teachers must be free to present facts about Canadian history without political persecution. Find your MLA’s email at https://www.leg.bc.ca/members #5 Two Wins for Freedom of Speech in the Ontario and Quebec Superior Courts The Ontario Superior Court ruled that Parliamentary Protective Services (PPS) violated the Charter rights of Campaign Life Coalition (CLC) when it stopped the group from displaying abortion-related imagery on Parliament Hill. The ruling confirms that public spaces like Parliament Hill remain important forums for political expression. The Court’s reasoning confirms that that government cannot restrict expression simply because it is offensive, thought to be inaccurate, or viewed as potentially harmful to some people. (Credit: ARPA Canada) The Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms announces that the Superior Court of Quebec has ruled that the Quebec government violated the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms by directing the Quebec City Convention Centre to cancel a conference organized by Harvest Ministries International because of the organization’s beliefs about abortion. Rebecca Luna, a mother of two from Victoria, B.C., died at approximately 1:15 p.m. on July 25, according to a post on the TikTok account where she described the disease and what it was doing to her to more than 97,000 followers. (Credit: JCCF) * JCCF Article - July 13, 2026 Call to action: * Consider sharing this story with those you know in the healthcare profession. * Pray for the judges and lawyers involved with this case. A Vancouver priest recovering from a hip fracture at Vancouver General Hospital says he was twice offered assisted death by health-care staff who knew he was a priest and opposed to euthanasia — a practice critics say is growing as medical professionals are increasingly encouraged to initiate such conversations. “There are some things you just don’t talk about to some people,” said Fr. With the stroke of a pen, the government of British Columbia has pulled funding from a long-standing Christian online homeschool provider, leaving families across the province scrambling for answers. Parents enrolled with Christian Homelearners eStreams (CHeS) were notified last week that the Ministry of Education has cancelled the school’s Group 1 certification, effective June 30, 2026.
