    Resident Evil: Retribution (2012) w/ Maeve

    There's a new Resident Evil movie by Zach Cregger coming out this week so MoviePod is returning to the Biohazard well. Maeve is back on the show to discuss Paul W. S. Anderson's best Resident Evil film, the fifth one, Retribution. This movie has a fascinating video game logic to it. The stylized action stands out and the movie is just a real riot of fun. If you have not seen the other movies in the franchise, this is still a film worth checking out. It's got Leon S. Kennedy, Barry Burton and Ada Wong!     Neon Genesis Evangelion - Episodes 25, 26 & The End of Evangelion (1997) w/ Caltex

    Sometimes when fans complain enough they will redo the ending of your hit TV show! Except Neon Genesis Evangelion is no Stranger Things. The ending of EVA was abstract and had to be rushed to keep up with a demanding schedule. After the controversial finale, Hideaki Anno and Gainax decided to reinterpret and remake the finale for the series with a two-part theatrical event. The first being a recap film of the series for newcomers and fans that needed a refresher. The second being a more literal telling of the abstract events of the series: The End of Evangelion. The End of Evangelion was a success and overtime fans have come to reassess how it reinterpreted and recontextualized the original ending of the TV show. As a whole, Neon Genesis Evangelion is considered to be a landmark anime and and The End of Evangelion is considered to be one of the best animated films ever made. It even got a release on the Criterion Channel just this past weekend with the original English dub. I'm joined by Caltex to discuss one of my favourite works of media ever in this ambitious episode that's a twist on the format of MoviePod: a movie that caused the reclamation of the ending of a TV series.     The Night of the Hunter (1955) w/ Audens

    Charles Laughton directed exactly one movie: The Night of the Hunter. Audiences and critics disliked it due to its shocking (for 1955) content. Laughton took the criticism to heart and never directed a movie again. People began to come around to the movie in the 70s as the New Hollywood era flourished. Audiences were not as shocked by the content shown and the films reputation has grown steadily since and it is now considered to be the defining film of Southern Gothic horror and one of the best films of all time.     The Battle of Algiers (1966) w/ Jacob and Jen Big Nasty from Worker's Lit

    It's the movie that depicted a conflict that literally brought down the Fourth French Republic. French critics hated it and it took five years for France to release Gillo Pontecorvo's The Battle of Algiers to release theatrically. Internationally, it was incredibly well regarded. American audiences that were against the Vietnam War gravitated towards it. Due to its grounded depiction of urban resilience and guerilla warfare groups such as the PLO and the Black Panthers had screenings of this film. Even the Pentagon had screenings of this film. This highly controversial film is regarded currently as a fair and balanced depiction of a sociopolitical quagmire in post-war France and Northern Africa.     Blade Runner (1982) w/ Kevin Tuck

    This is one of the movies that made me decide to choose this format for the podcast. Polarizing when it came out, thanks to an inferior theatrical cut, it released in the same month as other sci-fi gems like Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, The Thing and E.T.: The Extra Terrestrial. As time went on and additional cuts of the film were released, people went back to the sci-fi noir Blade Runner with deeper appreciation. It is now considered one of the greatest films ever made and it has made a significant impact on other films, video games and television series. Join me and Kevin for a spirited discussion praising this film and dumping on our modern hellscape's version of artificial intelligence. We discuss the theatrical cut with the awful narration and happy ending as well as the director's cut and the definitive Final Cut of the film. Blade Runner was directed by Ridley Scott and stars Harrison Ford, Ruger Hauer, Sean Young and Edward James Olmos. Kevin Tuck is an independent filmmaker.     Spider-Man 3 (2007) w/ Audens and egg_brained

    There's a new Spider-Man in the theatre so it's the perfect excuse to revisit the fantastic, yet maligned, third Sam Raimi film in his trilogy. This film ended a series but people came around to it a bit more a decade later when Tom Holland became the new Spider-Man and people realized this movie was funny on purpose and that the melodrama is something that is missing from the MCU. Spider-Man 3 is directed by Sam Raimi. It stars Tobey McGuire, Kirsten Dunst, James Franco, Thomas Haden Church, Topher Grace, Elizabeth Banks, Bryce Dallas Howard, James Cromwell, Rosemary Harris and J.K.     Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) w/ Tim Sestito and Tommy Thevenet from Haven't Scene It

    This is a big one. Batman AND Superman in the same movie? What could go wrong? To many, nothing went wrong and the three hour extended cut of Zack Snyder's superhero team up movie is a a great film. However, those people are wrong. This is possibly my most hated movie ever. I will hand it to them that the longer version is a more coherent movie. Snyder fans to this day like the auteur vision of this film and with films such as Zack Snyder's Justice League getting a proper full release they will still be in the replies of every social media post demanding to Restore the Snyderverse.     Jurassic Park III (2001) w/ Dalton Pike of Outside the Frame and Sick Flicks

    With one of our greats, Sam Neill, passing away I brough back Dalton Pike to the show to talk about his favourite Jurassic Park film, Joe Johnston's Jurassic Park III. The movie had a mixed reception upon release. However, Spielberg's mixed reception of The Lost World has had people debate for many years on which Jurassic Park sequel is the superior film. This episode has Dalton explain his love for talking animal films to my absolute amusement. We also go deep on our love as children on dinosaurs and this franchise.
