Carson Wentz Is Starting For The Vikings... Now What?

The Minnesota Vikings are turning to Carson Wentz. Kyler Murray has been ruled out for Monday night's matchup with the Buffalo Bills after dealing with hamstring tightness, meaning Wentz will make the start at quarterback for Minnesota. And while Wentz has already helped the Vikings win a game this season, Tyler Forness isn't convinced he's the answer to Minnesota's quarterback problems. Wentz has started two games this season, including the Vikings' win over the Chicago Bears, and also came off the bench against the Green Bay Packers to help Minnesota secure a win. But the numbers and film don't exactly suggest that Wentz is about to solve everything. The Vikings' quarterback situation has become one of the biggest questions surrounding the team, and Kyler Murray's injury adds another layer to an already complicated situation. Tyler breaks down what Carson Wentz brings to the Vikings, why his willingness to throw to Justin Jefferson could be a positive, and why Wentz's tendency to rely heavily on his first read could ultimately create problems for Minnesota's offense. He also explains why this isn't necessarily a soft benching of Kyler Murray, why the Vikings have historically been conservative with quarterback injuries, and why what happens next week could be much more revealing. If Kyler is healthy and immediately returns to the starting lineup, this was simply an injury-related decision. But if Wentz plays well and Minnesota starts winning football games, the conversation could change quickly. The bigger issue may actually be Kevin O'Connell. Tyler explains why he has serious doubts about O'Connell's ability to maximize Carson Wentz, despite the coach's history of getting the most out of quarterbacks. The Vikings have already shown that they can adjust the offense around their quarterbacks. The question is whether O'Connell will actually stick with those adjustments or eventually revert back to the offensive system he prefers. Tyler also discusses J.J. McCarthy's departure, why McCarthy's success with the Giants could become a stain on the Vikings' decision-making, and why the "quarterback guru" label surrounding O'Connell deserves more scrutiny. Is Carson Wentz the answer? Probably not. But the Vikings have to find a way to make this work. And with a 6-1 record, Minnesota can't afford to waste the opportunity created by one of the NFL's best defenses. What do you think happens with the Vikings' quarterback situation after Monday night? Kevin O'Connell has been one of the biggest reasons for the Minnesota Vikings' success over the past several seasons. But something has to change. Tyler Forness has spent plenty of time defending O'Connell, and he still believes O'Connell is one of the best head coaches in the NFL. The problem is that the Vikings' offense hasn't consistently worked for more than a year and a half, and Minnesota is wasting an opportunity with what could be one of the best defenses in franchise history. The Vikings' defense has been absolutely dominant. The offense has not. And that raises a difficult question: Does Kevin O'Connell need to change his approach? O'Connell's offensive system is incredibly creative. The Vikings consistently scheme receivers open, generate explosive opportunities and create favorable looks down the field. But the system only works if the quarterback is willing and comfortable making the throws. That's where things have gone wrong. Tyler breaks down why Kyler Murray has struggled to consistently pull the trigger on some of the throws Minnesota is asking him to make, particularly over the middle of the field. And if Kyler Murray isn't comfortable running those concepts, Tyler believes O'Connell has to adapt. The Vikings already showed what that can look like against the Saints, when Minnesota simplified the offense, emphasized shorter throws and found an offensive identity that worked. So why did they move away from it? Tyler also explains why this isn't simply about blaming Kyler Murray. Justin Jefferson is getting fewer than six targets per game, despite continuing to create separation. Jordan Addison is also capable of making plays down the field. The Vikings have the talent. Now they have to figure out how to use it. The bigger concern is that O'Connell has shown an ability to adapt in the past, including when the Vikings adjusted their offense around J.J. McCarthy and Kyler Murray. But those adjustments haven't consistently stuck. And that's becoming a problem. Minnesota has a 6-1 record and one of the best defenses in the NFL. This is exactly the kind of season where the offense doesn't need to be perfect. It just needs to complement the defense. Tyler explains why Kevin O'Connell may need to stop worrying about running the offense exactly the way he wants and instead build an offense around the quarterback he actually has. Because right now, the Vikings may be wasting a historically great defense. Is Kevin O'Connell the biggest problem with the Vikings offense? Let us know what you think in the comments. The Vikings Can FIX Kyler Murray... But There's A Problem

Is Kyler Murray actually fixable? That's the question surrounding the Minnesota Vikings after their loss to the Detroit Lions, but the answer is much more complicated than simply blaming Kyler Murray or Kevin O'Connell. Tyler Forness breaks down the tape and explains why there is still plenty of good to work with when it comes to Murray. The problem is that the Vikings aren't getting enough consistency from their quarterback, and some of the issues may have more to do with how the offense is being run than Murray's raw ability. Murray has the arm talent. He can attack vertically. He can create plays with his legs. Over the last two games, he's averaged 10.5 yards per attempt, showing that Minnesota is still capable of generating explosive plays through the air. But he's also missing opportunities. Justin Jefferson is getting open. Jordan Addison is getting open. And Murray isn't consistently throwing the ball when those receivers are coming out of their breaks. That's where anticipation and trust become so important. Tyler breaks down multiple examples from the tape, including a missed opportunity to Jefferson on a drift concept and the 50-plus-yard connection to Jordan Addison that showed exactly what this offense can look like when Murray sees the play correctly and trusts the throw. So is Kyler Murray the problem? Or is Kevin O'Connell asking him to operate an offense that is simply too complicated for him right now? Tyler argues that the Vikings may need to simplify things and allow Murray to play more freely rather than continually asking him to execute an extremely complex offense. He also explains: • Why Kyler Murray is still a much better option than Carson Wentz • Why Murray's accuracy has become inconsistent • Why Justin Jefferson isn't getting enough targets • How the Vikings can create easier throws • Why anticipation is so important for this offense • Why Kevin O'Connell may be overthinking things • How the Vikings successfully simplified the offense earlier this season • Why Murray's recent numbers aren't as bad as the eye test suggests • Whether the Vikings should change their offensive philosophy • Why this situation is still fixable Kevin O'Connell has already confirmed that Kyler Murray will remain the Vikings' quarterback as long as he's healthy. Now the question is whether Minnesota can find the version of Murray it believed it was getting when it signed him. Can the Vikings fix Kyler Murray? Let us know what you think in the comments. The Minnesota Vikings just lost to the Detroit Lions 19-15, and this one is going to raise some BIG questions. The biggest one starts with Kyler Murray. Tyler Forness breaks down the Vikings' frustrating loss to Detroit and explains why the conversation around Murray needs to become more nuanced — but also more urgent. Kyler made some really good plays in this game. He hit Justin Jefferson on a deep ball, found T.J. Hockenson for two touchdowns, converted the two-point attempt and made good decisions when scrambling. But the missed opportunities are becoming impossible to ignore. The Vikings had chances to extend drives and make explosive plays, but Murray struggled to consistently find open receivers, including Justin Jefferson. There were also multiple situations where Detroit dropped eight into coverage and Minnesota still couldn't find answers. That's the biggest concern. The Vikings know what Kyler can do when everything clicks. We've seen the explosive plays. The problem is that they aren't happening consistently enough. And that puts enormous pressure on a defense that has been carrying this team all season. Minnesota's defense held Detroit to just 19 points, but the Lions absolutely dominated the Vikings on the ground in the second half. Detroit finished with 230 rushing yards, including 153 in the second half. Jahmyr Gibbs was a major reason why, rushing for 153 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries. After the Vikings' defense dominated Jared Goff early, Detroit essentially decided to take the ball out of its quarterback's hands and run the football. Minnesota couldn't stop it. That creates another major question for the Vikings' defense: Can this unit continue carrying the team if the offense can't stay on the field? The Vikings held the ball for just 24:17, putting even more pressure on a defense that was already playing a huge number of snaps. Tyler also breaks down why he isn't panicking about Brian Flores' defense overall, why the defensive line needs more help and why Minnesota may need to find ways to get more players involved in the rotation. The Vikings are still in position to have a very good season. But if this team wants to make a Super Bowl run, the offense has to give the defense more help. And Kyler Murray has to be more consistent. What do you think is the biggest problem after the loss to Detroit? Let us know in the comments. The Minnesota Vikings have a BIG test against the Detroit Lions — but Brian Flores' defense may have the blueprint to win this game. The Vikings defense has been one of the best units in the NFL all season, ranking No. 1 in EPA per play allowed, No. 1 in EPA per dropback allowed and No. 1 in success rate allowed. Now they face one of the NFL's best offenses. Tyler Forness breaks down the biggest matchup of Vikings vs. Lions and explains why Minnesota could have a major advantage against Jahmyr Gibbs and Jared Goff. The Vikings already showed last season that they know how to make Gibbs a non-factor. On Christmas Day, Minnesota held Gibbs to just 41 rushing yards on 17 carries while limiting him to only three targets. The reason? Brian Flores' defense doesn't just blitz for the sake of blitzing. Minnesota uses pressure with a purpose, forcing running backs into pass protection and taking away one of the most dangerous weapons on the opposing offense. Can the Vikings do it again? Tyler also breaks down: • Why the Vikings defense has been so dominant • Brian Flores' approach to pressure and blitzing • How Minnesota can neutralize Jahmyr Gibbs • Why Gibbs' pass protection could be a major factor • Jared Goff's matchup against the Vikings defense • Why Minnesota's offense has been so frustrating • Kyler Murray's performance and what needs to change • The Vikings' struggles running the football • Why Jonathan Taylor would be such an intriguing addition • The massive statistical mismatch between the Vikings defense and offense • Why this game could come down to Minnesota's offense simply being good enough The Vikings are picking a fight with one of the best offenses in football, but Minnesota's defense has proven it can take elite players out of games. The Vikings Have A HUGE Test Against The Lions...

The Minnesota Vikings are about to face their biggest test yet. Tyler Forness is joined by Detroit Lions reporter Mike Payton for a full Vikings vs. Lions crossover preview ahead of this massive NFC North matchup. The Vikings enter the game with one of the most dominant defenses in the NFL, but Detroit presents a completely different challenge. Jared Goff has been extremely effective against pressure, while the Lions have an offensive line and rushing attack capable of testing Minnesota in ways few teams have this season. Can Brian Flores and the Vikings defense slow down Goff and the Lions offense? Can Detroit find answers against a Vikings defense that has allowed just three fourth-quarter points all season? And what happens when the Vikings offense faces a Lions defense that has started to show real signs of improvement? Tyler and Mike break down the biggest matchups, including: • Jared Goff vs. Brian Flores • The Vikings' pressure packages vs. the Lions offensive line • Jahmyr Gibbs and Detroit's ability to pass protect • Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison vs. Detroit's secondary • Aidan Hutchinson and the Lions pass rush • How the Vikings can attack Detroit's defense • Why the Vikings' run game could be critical • Whether Minnesota's defense is actually as good as it looks • The biggest X-factors for both teams Then they make their predictions. Mike Payton has the Lions winning 17-14. Tyler Forness has the Vikings winning 16-10. Who do you have? The Vikings' Run Game Is A HUGE Problem...

The Minnesota Vikings have a major problem on offense — and it's not simply Kyler Murray. The run game is bad. Tyler Forness breaks down why Minnesota's rushing attack has become one of the biggest problems on the team, why the offensive line isn't entirely to blame, why Aaron Jones isn't providing enough as the lead running back and why the Vikings may need to make a move before the problem gets any worse. Minnesota currently ranks 27th in the NFL in EPA per rush and 27th in rushing success rate. That's especially frustrating because the Vikings aren't simply refusing to run the football. They're putting effort into the ground game, and the offensive line has actually performed relatively well in some important areas. Minnesota ranks fourth in the NFL in run-block win rate. So what's going wrong? One major factor is the loss of Josh Oliver, one of the best blocking tight ends in football. His absence has made it more difficult for the Vikings to create the same kind of blocking structures they were able to use previously. But there are also legitimate concerns with the offensive line itself. The interior hasn't been good enough, particularly at center and right guard. Will Fries was signed to a massive contract with the expectation that he could stabilize the right guard position for years, but his performance hasn't matched the investment. Then there's the running back room. Tyler loves what Aaron Jones has brought to the Vikings, but the production simply isn't good enough right now. Jones is averaging 4.2 yards per carry, but his rushing yards over expected is negative and his overall rush EPA is extremely poor. The issue isn't effort or toughness. It's the lack of explosive runs and the inability to consistently turn opportunities into positive plays. Jordan Mason has been somewhat better, but he hasn't been the explosive answer Minnesota hoped he would be either. That is why the possibility of adding another running back has become so interesting. Jonathan Taylor has been discussed as a potential target, and adding a back with his combination of explosiveness and workload ability could completely change the dynamic of the Vikings' running game. The Vikings don't need to become a top-five rushing offense. They don't even necessarily need to become a top-10 rushing offense. They simply need to stop being one of the worst rushing teams in the NFL. If Minnesota can improve from 27th to somewhere around league average, it could make a massive difference for an offense that is already trying to figure out how to get the most out of Kyler Murray. The Vikings have Super Bowl aspirations. If they want to get there, they need to find a way to create more explosive plays on the ground. Is the answer fixing the offensive line? Is it getting more out of Aaron Jones and Jordan Mason? Or does Minnesota need to make a trade for another running back? Let us know what you think. Kyler Murray Is Starting To Look A LOT Like Kirk Cousins...

The Minnesota Vikings have a Kyler Murray problem. But it's not as simple as saying Kyler Murray is bad. In fact, there are plenty of reasons to believe Murray can still become a successful quarterback in Minnesota. He's shown high-level throws, mobility, anticipation and the ability to make difficult plays. The problem is consistency. And that is where things start to look VERY familiar for Vikings fans. Tyler Forness breaks down the biggest issues with Minnesota's offense and explains why Kyler Murray is starting to resemble a more athletic, modern version of Kirk Cousins. The comparison isn't about talent. It's about the way both quarterbacks have played the position. Cousins became a frustrating figure in Minnesota because he could make excellent throws and execute at a high level, but he also developed a reputation for being conservative, taking checkdowns and failing to consistently attack opportunities down the field. Murray is starting to show some of those same tendencies. Against the Colts, there were multiple opportunities for explosive plays. Jauan Jennings was open on a seam route. Justin Jefferson had opportunities where the ball needed to arrive with better timing and accuracy. Jordan Mason was missed in the flat. The issue wasn't simply that Murray made bad decisions. There were times when he made the correct decision but failed to execute the throw. That's an important distinction. Tyler also breaks down Kevin O'Connell's role in the problem. There has been increasing discussion about whether O'Connell should give up play-calling, but Tyler argues that simply making a change for the sake of making a change doesn't solve anything. Minnesota doesn't currently have an obvious replacement with NFL play-calling experience who would clearly be better. The bigger question is whether O'Connell is giving his quarterbacks too much freedom to dictate what the offense runs based on defensive looks. The Vikings use a process called "canning," which allows Kyler Murray to choose between two plays based on what the defense shows before the snap. That can create advantageous situations, but O'Connell acknowledged that it may also give defenses too much control over what Minnesota is willing to run. There are still plenty of reasons for optimism. Murray has shown legitimate high-level quarterbacking. He's made excellent throws with anticipation to Justin Jefferson, hit T.J. Hockenson down the seam and made difficult throws on the move. That's why this isn't simply a "Kyler Murray is bad" argument. The question is whether the Vikings can get the best version of him consistently enough to compete for a Super Bowl. Because if they can, this roster has Super Bowl potential. But if Kyler remains inconsistent and conservative, Minnesota could find itself having the same postseason limitations it experienced with Kirk Cousins. Is Kyler Murray actually Kirk Cousins 2.0? Or is this simply a quarterback still learning how to operate in a new offense? Let us know what you think.
