Crossing The Threshold: How the Global System Broke in 2014 | THE CIVIC BRIEF — SEASON 2

What if 2014 wasn’t simply a bad year? What if it was the year the system itself changed? In Episode 1 of our September/October 2026 Experience, “See the Age,” we introduced a proposition: 2014 was a hinge year—a moment when changes accumulating beneath the surface began interacting in ways that fundamentally altered the strategic environment. In Episode 2, “See the System,” we applied systems thinking to the U.S.–Iran confrontation and the Strait of Hormuz, demonstrating why events that appear separate—military, economic, diplomatic, technological, political, commercial—cannot be understood adequately in isolation. Now, in Episode 3, “Crossing the Threshold,” we bring those ideas together. The question is no longer simply: What happened in 2014? The more important question is: What changed because of it? Russia seized Crimea. ISIS swept across Iraq and Syria. The Ebola epidemic exposed vulnerabilities extending far beyond public health. Conflict returned to Gaza. Competition intensified across contested maritime spaces. Digital technologies were changing information, influence, and power. States, markets, networks, institutions, and populations were becoming increasingly interconnected—and increasingly capable of transmitting disruption from one system into another. Individually, these were crises. Together, they suggested something more consequential: The accumulated stresses were beginning to change the behavior of the system itself. That is the threshold explored in this episode. Drawing upon the General Theory of Compound Security and The W.i.S.E. Way™, we examine the emergence of the Compound Age: an environment in which security challenges increasingly interact, cascade, substitute for one another, and generate consequences that no institution, government, military, market, or society can fully understand by examining its own piece of the problem. And that leads to the central proposition of this three-episode Experience: 2014 did not create the forces reshaping our world. It revealed that enough of those forces had converged to change the system. The world did not end. The old assumptions did. Understanding that distinction matters because many of the crises confronting us today are not isolated departures from an otherwise stable international order. They are manifestations of a system operating under compound stress. Which means the challenge before leaders and citizens alike is larger than responding faster to the next crisis. We have to learn to see the age, see the system, recognize when thresholds are being crossed—and adapt before conditions force adaptation upon us. That is the work of strategic foresight. That is the work of systems thinking. And that is the work of The Civic Brief. THE SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2026 EXPERIENCE Episode 1 — SEE THE AGE: Why 2014 Was the Hinge Year Episode 2 — SEE THE SYSTEM: The U.S.–Iran & Strait of Hormuz Case Episode 3 — CROSSING THE THRESHOLD: How the Global System Broke in 2014 Three episodes. One argument: SEE THE AGE → SEE THE SYSTEM → SEE THE THRESHOLD. Because before we can decide what comes next, we first have to understand the system we are actually living in. From Wilson W.i.S.E. See The System: The U.S. - Iran and Strait of Hormuz Case | THE CIVIC BRIEF — SEASON 2

What happens when the problem in front of us is not simply complicated—but compound-complex? In Episode 1 of our September/October 2026 Experience, “See the Age,” we argued that 2014 marked a hinge: the point at which the strategic environment began changing faster, interacting more deeply, and behaving less predictably than the institutions built to manage it. In Episode 2, “See the System,” we move from diagnosis to application. Our case is the continuing U.S.–Iran confrontation and the Strait of Hormuz—but this is not simply an episode about Iran, military operations, oil, or a maritime chokepoint. It is about what becomes visible when we stop treating those things as separate problems and begin seeing the system connecting them. Energy markets. Shipping. Military power. Diplomacy. Infrastructure. Alliances. Domestic politics. Deterrence. Geography. Commercial behavior. Public confidence. Adversary adaptation. Each affects the others. Actions generate reactions. Solutions in one part of the system can create new vulnerabilities somewhere else. And seemingly local events can propagate outward until their consequences become regional—or global. That is the central challenge of the Compound Age. Using the Strait of Hormuz as our real-world case, we introduce The W.i.S.E. Way™ and a different approach to strategic thinking and doing: SEE before you decide. MAP before you intervene. ASSESS before you prioritize. DESIGN before you act. ACT with purpose. ADAPT before conditions force adaptation. The objective is not prediction for prediction’s sake. It is better judgment: understanding relationships, dependencies, feedback loops, vulnerabilities, second- and third-order effects, and emerging conditions before deciding what to do about them. Because in a compound-complex world, seeing the event is no longer enough. We have to see the system. This is The Civic Brief—where we connect what is happening to why it matters, and why it matters to what comes next. See the Age: Why 2014 Was the Hinge Year | THE CIVIC BRIEF — SEASON 2

What if the world we are struggling to understand today did not begin in 2020, 2022, or even 2016? What if the hinge was 2014? In the Season 2 premiere of The Civic Brief, Dr. Isaiah “Ike” Wilson III looks back at a year when seemingly separate developments began converging into something larger: Russia’s seizure of Crimea and war in Ukraine; the rise of ISIS and the return of large-scale geopolitical competition; accelerating technological disruption; growing strains on democratic institutions and the post–Cold War international order; and the emergence of new forms of conflict that no longer fit neatly into categories of “war” and “peace,” “foreign” and “domestic,” or “military” and “civilian.” The argument is not that everything changed on a single date—or that 2014 caused everything that followed. It is that 2014 revealed the age we were entering. Looking backward from 2026, patterns that once appeared disconnected become easier to see as parts of a larger transformation: intensifying great-power competition, hybrid warfare, information conflict, economic coercion, technological acceleration, institutional stress, and the increasing interdependence of crises across borders and domains. This is what Wilson calls the Compound Age—an era in which problems do not merely accumulate. They interact, cascade, and change one another. And that raises the central civic question of this episode: If 2014 was the hinge, what should we have learned—and what must citizens and leaders understand now about the world that emerged from it? Season 2 of The Civic Brief begins by doing something deceptively simple: See the age. See the system. Then ask what responsible citizenship and leadership require of us within it. The Civic Brief explores the intersection of democracy, national security, strategy, history, technology, and citizenship—making complicated systems understandable without pretending they are simple. The WiSE Way: Applying the WiSE LaGrange Doctrine

What happens when the systems we depend on lose their balance point? In this episode of The Civic Brief, Dr. Ike Wilson introduces the W.i.S.E. Lagrange Doctrine—a practical framework for understanding strategy in a world increasingly defined by uncertainty, competition, and cascading disruption. Drawing from geopolitics, business leadership, systems theory, and even astrophysics, Dr. Wilson explains why today's leaders can no longer rely on a single source of stability. Instead, success depends upon designing resilient systems, building distributed networks of trust, and creating organizations capable of adapting under pressure. Whether you're a founder, CEO, policymaker, public servant, or simply trying to make sense of a rapidly changing world, this conversation offers a new way of thinking about leadership, legitimacy, resilience, and strategic advantage in the Compound Era. The Lost (‘Lagrange') Balance Point: Why the Global System is Drifting

Has the international system lost its strategic equilibrium? In this episode, Dr. Isaiah (Ike) Wilson III introduces the idea of the "Lost Lagrange Balance Point" as a way of understanding why today's international order appears increasingly unstable, fragmented, and difficult to manage. Borrowing the concept of Lagrange points from celestial mechanics, Dr. Wilson explores whether the post-Cold War international system has drifted away from the conditions that once allowed major powers, institutions, and markets to remain in relative balance. Rather than viewing today's crises as isolated events, he argues they reflect interacting political, economic, technological, informational, and security dynamics that reinforce one another. Viewed through the framework of Compound Security Competition, this episode examines how legitimacy, resilience, strategic competition, and systems thinking provide a more complete understanding of twenty-first century geopolitics than traditional linear models. The result is a fresh way of thinking about global instability—and what strategic leaders must do to adapt.
