TOLD HE HE MAY NEVER WALK AGAIN. THEN HE WATCHED HIS BROTHER DIE | COLIN OWENSB

At 15 years old, Colin Owensby was asleep in the back seat while his older brother drove their family home from a road trip. His brother fell asleep at the wheel. The car left the freeway and went down a hill, leaving Colin folded inside the back seat and pinned beneath their luggage. He suffered a fractured spine, severe internal organ damage, and spent roughly five days in a medically induced coma. Doctors told his family he might never walk again. But the full extent of the spinal injury wasn’t discovered immediately. When doctors first tried to get Colin moving, the damaged vertebrae opened further. He wasn’t simply recovering from a crash. He had to heal his organs, rebuild the muscle he had lost, and teach his body how to walk again. Then, only months after the accident, Colin watched the same older brother collapse during a basketball game and die from an undetected heart condition. This is where Colin’s story truly begins. In this episode of Man in Progress: Forging Manhood, Travis Murray sits down with Colin Owensby, a two-time Ironman finisher and 100-mile ultramarathoner, for an honest conversation about trauma, grief, resilience, and the decision to keep living when life has given you every reason to shut down. Colin shares what it took to rebuild his body after the crash, how losing his brother changed the direction of his life, and why resilience isn’t about pretending the pain didn’t happen. It’s about learning how to carry what happened without allowing it to decide what happens next. Colin also walks through his Map of Resilience, a practical framework built around gratitude, community, movement, nutrition, nature, creativity, service, meaningful goals, exploration, and spirituality. This isn’t a story about trauma magically making someone stronger. It’s about what one man chose to build after his world broke. The Role That Saved You Is Now Ruining Your Relationships

The dependable one. The protector. The peacemaker. The man who never needs anything from anyone. You probably didn’t choose that role. You stepped into it because, somewhere along the way, it helped you survive. It kept the peace, earned approval, prevented rejection, or gave you a sense of control when life didn’t feel safe. And it worked. But a role built to protect a child can slowly become armor that isolates the man. In this episode of Man in Progress: Forging Manhood, Travis Murray explores how childhood survival roles become adult identities and why the very qualities people praise in you may be costing you peace, intimacy, and the ability to be fully known. You may be proud of being dependable, but unable to ask for help. You may call yourself calm, but you’ve learned to suppress everything you feel. You may believe you’re protecting your family while quietly shutting them out. The goal isn’t to destroy the strength you built. That strength carried you through something real. The work is learning to separate the gift from the armor. Keep the reliability. Release the belief that everything rests on you. Keep the emotional control. Release the fear that having feelings makes you weak. Keep the ability to protect. Release the need to control everything around you. Through the story of Daniel, a man who learned to become the dependable protector, Travis shows how competence can become a survival strategy and how that strategy can create distance inside otherwise safe relationships. You’ll also be guided through a practical role audit to identify the role you carry, what it once protected you from, what it has given you, and what it’s costing you now. Because mature masculinity doesn’t require a man to walk through life without armor. It gives him the discernment to know when he no longer needs to wear it. IN THIS EPISODE • How childhood survival roles become adult identities • Why dependability, humor, control, and emotional silence can become protective armor • The difference between genuine strength and emotional isolation • How the need for safety and approval shapes a boy’s behavior • Why survival roles continue long after the danger is gone • Daniel’s story and the burden of becoming the dependable protector • How hiding fear and vulnerability creates distance in relationships • Why putting down the armor doesn’t mean losing your strength • How to separate the gift within your role from the fear sustaining it THE FORGED QUESTION What role are you praised for that is quietly costing you connection or peace? Don’t rip the armor off just to prove you’re growing. Study it. Understand why you built it. Honor the strength it gave you. Then begin putting down the pieces you no longer need.
