What Christian Women Look Like When They Finally Walk Free

If you’ve been with us for this entire series, I want to take a moment before we get into it and just say — thank you. What you’ve done over these four weeks isn’t small. You’ve been willing to look at things that most women in church spaces never give themselves permission to examine. That takes courage. Real courage. And I don’t want to rush past that. We started by asking: How did I get here? We named the conditioning — the invisible rulebook, the early lessons about what a “good church girl” looks like, the patterns installed in us before we even had language to question them. Then we got honest about the cost. The burnout. The exhaustion of being the strong one. The slow erosion of self that happens when you say yes to everything and everyone — including the ministry — but never to your own rest, your own voice, your own becoming. Last week we traced the silence. We talked about why so many of us swallowed our brilliance, edited ourselves before we even spoke, and called it humility when it was really fear. And today — today we talk about the other side. Not the perfect side. Not the “I’ve arrived” side. But the real, attainable, daily practice of living free. What it looks like to show up to church without managing how you come across. What it feels like to worship without an invisible audience in your head. What it means to know — really know — that God never needed your performance. He has always wanted your presence. I want to read something to you. It’s from the closing pages of the Church Girl Detox, and I wrote it because I needed to say it — to myself, and to every woman who might need to hear it: “You are not walking away from God. You are walking toward Him — more honestly, more whole, and more free.” That’s what this episode is about. Not a checklist. Not a program. A permission slip — written by the One who created you — to finally exhale. To be seen without a role. To be loved without a performance. To walk into the calling He prepared for you before you ever learned to shrink. Ready to Go Deeper? And if you’re ready to go deeper — to actually do the work of detoxing the patterns we’ve been naming together — the Church Girl Reset Toolkit has everything you need: the Detox book and workbook, a 7-day devotional, the full Detox Challenge, and a full year right here in this community. 🔗 Church Girl Archetype Quiz (free — start here): 🔗 Church Girl Reset Toolkit: Drop a comment below: What shifted for you over this series? One thing you see differently. One thing you’re going to do differently. Your breakthrough might be exactly what someone else needs to read today. I Love God, But I’m Tired of Playing the "Good Church Girl" | Church Girl Unchained (Part 1)

Have you ever felt like you had an “emotional dress code” before you even knew what emotions were? In this kickoff to our 4-part series, Unchained Church Girl, we’re going back to the beginning to ask: How did I get here? For many Christian women—especially those of us who grew up in the Black church—we learned church behavior long before we learned a real relationship with God. We were taught expectations before intimacy and service before daughterhood. Today, Cheryl and Valerie discuss the origin of the “Good Church Girl” and how to identify the invisible rulebook we’ve been carrying for decades. In this episode, we explore: * Sunday School vs. Scripture: Why we often prioritize church tradition over biblical truth. * The Invisible Rulebook: Naming the unwritten standards of dress, speech, and “strength” that lead to burnout. * Identity vs. Conditioning: How to separate who God says you are from who church culture told you to be. * The “Sanctified” Mask: Breaking the habit of performing for the third row instead of worshipping God. This isn’t about church bashing—it’s about church healing. It’s time to move from sitting on the sidelines to fully engaging in the life God actually called you to live. 💬 COMMENT CHALLENGE: What is one unwritten church rule you carried for years? Drop it in the comments. Let’s name it so we can leave it behind. 3. Called, But Questioned

    Called, But Questioned

As we close out Women’s History Month, we’re continuing our conversation about women, faith, and legacy inside the church. In this episode of Church Girl Chats, we explore a topic many Christian women quietly wrestle with: calling. Many women in the church carry gifts they don’t always feel permission to fully use. Not because they lack faith. Not because they lack ability. But because church culture has often left them wondering where their voice belongs. In this episode of Church Girl Chats, we talk honestly about what it means for women to sense a calling from God — and the tension that can arise when that calling isn’t always clearly affirmed or understood. This is not a conversation about fighting for position. It’s about understanding calling, stewarding gifts with wisdom, and walking confidently in what God has placed within you. We explore the difference between humility and shrinking, between service and invisibility, and how women can contribute powerfully to the life of the church while maintaining unity and respect. Because when identity is grounded in God, calling no longer feels like competition — it becomes stewardship. This episode is not about division or debate. It’s about reflection, maturity, and learning how to steward our gifts with wisdom and grace. If you’ve ever felt called but unsure where you fit, this conversation is for you. Get full access to Becoming Engaged with Cheryl Thomas at becomingengaged.substack.com/subscribe

The Hidden Leaders of the Black Church

Welcome back to Church Girl Chats, the podcast where we have honest conversations about faith, church culture, life after 40, and becoming the women God created us to be. This month we’re doing something a little special as we recognize Women’s History Month. We’re taking time to talk about the women who shaped our faith, carried our churches, and prayed us into the lives we’re living today. If you grew up in the Black church, you know exactly who we’re talking about — the church mothers, the prayer warriors, the Sunday school teachers, the women who seemed to always be there before everybody else arrived and somehow stayed after everybody else left. Their faith built foundations many of us are still standing on today. So for the next couple of episodes, we’re reflecting on their legacy, our calling, and what it means for women in the church today. Let’s get into today’s conversation. For many of us who grew up in the Black church, faith wasn’t just taught from the pulpit — it was modeled in the pews. It was the church mothers who prayed for us.The women who corrected us.The women who showed up week after week with quiet faithfulness. They may not have always had titles, but they carried the spiritual culture of the church. In this episode of Church Girl Chats, we pause to honor the women whose prayers, discipline, and devotion helped shape generations of believers. But we also ask deeper questions: What did these women carry spiritually and emotionally? What parts of their legacy should we continue? And what might we need to do differently so that faithfulness does not become exhaustion? This conversation is both gratitude and reflection — honoring the women who carried us while considering what it means to carry the church forward today.
