S7 Ep 104: Roop Singh on nervous system regulation, hypnosis and changing your state

Content note: This episode includes discussion of family violence, the death of a parent, grief and trauma. Support details are at the end of these notes. Roop Singh calls himself a "computer science nerd". He is also a certified hypnotist. After years working at the intersection of technology and strategy, including two TEDx talks, he now coaches and teaches people how to change the state of their mind and body. In this conversation with Melanie Suzanne Wilson, Roop shares how losing his mother in 2007 led him to a silent Vipassana meditation retreat, and to the years of study that followed. He explains why he thinks of the body and nervous system as hardware and the mind as software, what the window of tolerance is, and how he uses hypnosis and somatic work with clients. He also guides Melanie through three short practices you can try as you listen. In this episode 1. Roop's story: growing up in India, caring for his mother in hospital in 2007, and the Vipassana retreat he says saved him. 2. Two careers in parallel: technology strategy, and the inner work that has become his main work. 3. Hardware and software: why Roop says you can enter the body through the mind, or the mind through the body. 4. Why, in his experience, intellect can become a limiting factor. 5. States and the window of tolerance: being neither too wired nor too flat. 6. Inside a silent retreat: ten to eleven hours of meditation a day, and what he noticed about thoughts and the body. 7. Hypnosis as Roop sees it: a natural state rather than something done to you, and a tool for change rather than entertainment. 8. Why he combines hypnosis with somatic work. 9. The mailman story, and the life events that act as alarms. 10. The gazelle and the tiger: completing the fear cycle and learning to feel safe. 11. Three practices, demonstrated: the physiological sigh for calming down, fire breath for waking up, and an eye movement routine before sleep. 12. The five skills in his State Change Mastery program. A note on the practices Roop says fire breath is not for anyone who is pregnant or has heart issues or high blood pressure, and that it is the wrong choice when you are already anxious. This episode is general information, not medical or mental health advice. The views on hypnosis and the nervous system are Roop's own. About Roop Singh Roop Singh is the creator of State Change Mastery, a program that helps high performers take command of their state (mind, body, and breath) so they can think clearly, perform under pressure, and find more joy in their lives. His own transformation began in 2007, when a turning point in his life sparked a nearly two-decade obsession with understanding how state shapes everything. Since then, he has trained across more than 19 modalities spanning ancient practice and modern neuroscience, including 10-day silent meditation retreats, three forms of yoga, breathwork, and hypnosis. Alongside that inner work, Roop spent 20 years in tech and corporate leadership, advising startups, working with Fortune 1000 companies, and mentoring founders and executives through high-stakes decisions. State Change Mastery brings those two worlds together, pairing what works in direct practice with what holds up in the research, and turns it into a practical toolkit for reclaiming agency and building capacity. Introducing Reed Hastings on Unlearning Leadership: From Netflix to the Mountain from Unbossing. Follow the show: Unbossing Reed Hastings built Netflix from a DVD-by-mail startup into a global entertainment empire โ€” and then did something most founders never do: he walked away. In this first episode of Unbossing, hosts Rishad Tobaccowala and Drew Ianni sit down with Reed for a candid conversation about the leadership principles he'd keep, the ones he'd rewrite, and what he's learned building something entirely new. Reed opens up about the famous Netflix Culture Memo โ€” what it got right, what it got wrong, and why, if he could do it again, he'd lead with the heart. Now on the board of Anthropic and developing Powder Mountain into a private ski community in Utah, Reed reflects on the shift from the digital to the very physical โ€” and what that's taught him about culture, community, and starting over. This is a conversation about unlearning the rules that made you successful, so you can build something even better.   See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information. Podcaster and Former Healthcare Executive Natalie Bulger on Why You Should Say Your Story

Content note: This episode includes discussion of assault, pregnancy loss, grief, and suicide loss. Support details are at the end of these notes. Natalie Bulger spent years as a healthcare executive, including seven years in federal healthcare for veterans in the United States, before burnout led her to step away. She now hosts the podcast Motivation N'at. In this conversation with Melanie Suzanne Wilson, Natalie talks about what podcasting has taught her about listening, why she treats AI as a tool, and what she does now that she has left a demanding role. She also shares, in her own words, a story from when she was 17 and 18 that she kept hidden for years, and what changed when she began speaking about it. In this episode Podcasting as a lesson in listening, and the themes Natalie's guests keep returning to: leadership, imposter syndrome, mental health, grief, and AI. Using AI well: why Natalie checks the research AI gives her, why she gives it a persona before asking, and why she believes search engines still have a job to do. Melanie's prompt tip of asking AI to think like a specific person, and who Natalie would choose. Leaving federal healthcare after burning out, and the mix of fractional support, training and podcast editing Natalie does now. Voice and speaking habits: filler words, accents, vocal fry and how the way we talk rubs off on each other. Making space for heavy conversations, and what happens when first-time guests tell their stories. The shower lamp: a small sensory change that Natalie calls a game changer. The story Natalie carried from the age of 17 and 18, how it shaped her as a leader, and why she no longer rewrites it for other people. Inside a large government agency: the mission she loved, the cost of change made without asking questions, and the grief of leaving work that matters to you. Valuing workers, the wealth gap, and accepting that some people want to work for someone else. Quotes from this episode "If you don't speak it into existence, it sits in your body, and it sits there, and it's this thing that you carry that no one else knows." Natalie Bulger "I don't have to be two different people." Natalie Bulger "It becomes less weighted when it's not hidden." Natalie Bulger "Friends happen when you just take away the expectations, and you go talk to each other." Natalie Bulger "Conversations like this would be something AI can't replace." Melanie Suzanne Wilson About Natalie Bulger Natalie Bulger is the host of Motivation N'at. A former healthcare executive, she spent seven years in the Veterans Health Administration in the United States, focusing on risk, regulatory oversight, and compliance, with a background in social work and healthcare administration. She now focuses on curious exploration, the power of perspective and influence, and empowering awareness as the first step towards the best-informed decision-making. She describes herself as a survivor and recovering fixer. Support If this episode raises anything for you, support is available. Long Description What if better health isn't about doing more, but about paying closer attention to what you're already doing? Melanie Suzanne Wilson is joined by Hannah Farrow, an integrative health coach, Hatha yoga teacher and doctoral student in chiropractic based in Fort Worth, Texas. Hannah helps people use the levers of biological and relational health to live a more integrated, wholesome life. They explore how Hatha yoga trains us to sit with discomfort, why relationships act like environments for the nervous system, Hannah's framework for hard, tragic and bad days, the trap of optimisation sickness, why there's no catching up on sleep, and how to eat real food on a budget. It all comes back to the fundamentals: get enough sleep, eat real food, move your body, love your people. Louis Swart: Delegation, AI & the Trust You Need to Let Go

Ironbrij founder Louis Swart on why doing everything yourself devalues your business, his evolving AI-powered delegation stack, hypnotherapy, and why trust and control โ€” not time โ€” are the real barriers to letting go.   Louis Swart built and sold a $5 million business by learning to delegate โ€” and now helps other founders do the same through his company, Ironbrij, first through virtual assistants and now through AI. In this conversation, Louis and Melanie explore why doing everything yourself makes a business worth nothing, the concept of "productive procrastination," and how Louis's own delegation systems have evolved from a human EA to a full AI stack built on Claude Code, handling everything from meeting prep to client research. They also dig into Louis's background as an NLP master practitioner and certified hypnotherapist โ€” including a live hypnosis demonstration โ€” his argument that AI can genuinely evoke human emotion, and the simple Post-it-note exercise he uses with clients to decide exactly what should be delegated. ๐ŸŽง Full show notes and transcript: [EPISODE URL โ€” placeholder, confirm before publishing] ๐Ÿ’› Support the show: PayPal.me/differentlivingmsw ๐ŸŒฟ Join The Motivate Collective community: motivatecollective.com/join ๐Ÿ˜ด Try HumanCharger with code THEMOTIVATECOLLECTIVE Tags: delegation, AI, virtual assistants, business coaching, entrepreneurship, burnout, NLP, hypnotherapy, productivity, conscious leadership, Claude AI, wellness podcast Category: Education > Self-Improvement Author: The Motivate Collective Explicit Rating: No

    Episode 100: Live Anniversary Panel

The Motivate Collective โ€” Episode 100: Live Anniversary Panel   Table of Contents Episode Overview Meet the Panel Episode Breakdown (Timestamped) Key Insights & Themes Audience Q&A Guest & Community Links Outstanding Publishing Checklist 1. Episode Overview To mark one year and 100 episodes of The Motivate Collective, Melanie hosted a live, in-person panel recording โ€” a first for the show, which has otherwise been recorded remotely. Four returning guests joined her to reflect on what a year of podcasting has taught them, followed by a live audience Q&A. The conversation moves through public speaking confidence, using AI to reclaim time for human connection, media literacy in the AI age, and Australia's cultural relationship with ambition and money. 2. Meet the Panel Baraka Chimrillo โ€” Novelist, former radio personality, and educator. Writes short stories, novels, and poetry, and runs literary and poetry evenings. [Location of teaching courses stated in the recording but unclear on transcript โ€” flagged for confirmation before publishing.] Previously a guest on the podcast; described exploring topics including art, death, consciousness, and personal development in that earlier conversation. Dr Eugen ("Dr Jen") โ€” Practised as a GP for nearly 30 years before transitioning to work as a life coach. Works primarily with women in caregiving roles who feel unsupported by the traditional healthcare system, drawing on her own story and experience of burnout. Sarah โ€” Financial expert; this marks her third time recording with Melanie. Speaks to using podcasting as a low-risk way to build public speaking confidence, and to how she works with clients on their underlying relationship with money. Robbie (Robbie Mattei) โ€” Runs two fitness training studios with multiple employees. Recorded a separate one-on-one episode with Melanie (referenced as forthcoming). Advocates for an "AI-first" hiring and operations philosophy: automating administrative back-end work so business owners can spend more time on direct human connection with clients. 3. Episode Breakdown (Timestamped) [All timestamps below are pulled from the raw recording and are placeholders pending confirmation against the final edited cut.] 00:01 โ€” Live welcome, framing of the 100th episode and one-year anniversary; Melanie reflects on starting the show with a five-year-old MacBook and a cheap microphone. 01:15 โ€” Round-robin intros begin. Baraka shares her background as a novelist, poet, and educator. 02:41 โ€” Baraka on the value of showing up authentically: "show who you are, what you know, and how you can contribute to the community." 03:22 โ€” Dr Jen introduces herself, her medical background, and her pivot to life coaching. 05:52 โ€” Sarah reflects on podcasting as practice for building public speaking confidence and reducing fear of the camera. 07:46 โ€” Robbie discusses his fitness business, contrarian messaging, and his AI-first approach to automating operations. 10:13 โ€” Robbie expands on how automation has freed up his time for more client-facing, human connection. 11:58 โ€” Live audience Q&A opens. 12:04 โ€” Elliot (audience, freelance copywriter) asks how media and audience communication have changed. 13:05 โ€” Panel discusses the shift from traditional media gatekeepers to today's podcasting and social landscape, and the need for discernment around misinformation. 15:20 โ€” Melanie raises the question of where the line sits on sensitive or difficult topics shared on the show. 16:28 โ€” Panel discusses publishing responsibility now that "everyone can publish," and the importance of critical thinking and self-trust when navigating information. 19:45 โ€” Robbie speaks to the vulnerability of being on a podcast and why people generally resist change. 21:29 โ€” Second audience question opens (Ken). 21:47 โ€” Ken (audience, cost-saving/local sourcing business) asks Sarah about people's relationship with money. 22:25 โ€” Sarah on identifying a person's underlying beliefs and mindset about money before offering advice. 23:55 โ€” Panel discusses "tall poppy syndrome" in Australian culture and the tendency to criticise rather than celebrate success. 25:07 โ€” Closing reflections and thanks to the panel and live audience. 25:29 โ€” Final CTA: how to connect with guests, how to be featured on the show, and an invitation to start your own podcast. 4. Key Insights & Themes Podcasting as a confidence-building practice ground. Multiple guests independently framed being on a podcast as low-risk "reps" for public speaking โ€” a way to build comfort in front of a camera before higher-stakes speaking opportunities. AI as a tool for reclaiming human connection, not replacing it. Robbie's operating philosophy โ€” automate what can be automated, train people to work alongside AI rather than be replaced by it โ€” was a recurring thread, tying directly into more time for face-to-face client relationships. Media literacy in an unfiltered publishing landscape. With traditional gatekeepers gone, the panel discussed the responsibility that comes with anyone being able to publish anything, and the importance of discernment and critical thinking for both creators and audiences. Vulnerability and authenticity resonate โ€” and cost something. Several guests noted that sharing openly and without filter attracts the right audience while inevitably alienating others, and that resistance to change is a common, understandable human response. Australia's relationship with ambition and money. The panel touched on "tall poppy syndrome" โ€” the cultural tendency to criticise rather than celebrate visible success โ€” and how that shapes conversations around wealth, entrepreneurship, and financial confidence. 5. Audience Q&A Elliot (freelance copywriter) asked how communication and audience-reaching methods have shifted across radio, television, the internet, and social media. Ken (runs a business helping companies cut costs through local sourcing) asked Sarah, as a financial expert, how she navigates people's discomfort or judgement around discussing money. [Full names/business details for Elliot and Ken as stated in the room; social handles not captured in the recording and should be treated as placeholders if being credited publicly.] 6.
